I can't understand why poor people are often considered addicted gamblers. Yet, many wealthy people have gone bankrupt because of gambling. Young age isn't always a factor in developing a gambling addiction, as many older people also suffer from addiction. IMO, the cause is the winning mentality that exists within them, who always try to find a big win, forcing themselves when they lose, forgetting that they have to control themselves to not gamble excessively.

Well, poor people can't be gambling addicts as they have less capital, and if they blow up their capital quickly in gambling, how can they further gamble  Also, I don't think young people can be addicted to gambling as they do not have money to keep the gambling urge continuing after losing.

I think it is the middle-aged people between 30 and 45 years of age who have money (the rich settled ones) who are mostly addicted to gamble. They may have well settled business or are working on good job posts, and hence spending money is not a problem for them. When you can spend and lose money and that doesn't hurt you initially, you will become addicted to gambling.

Actually in a situation whereby poverty is attached I would say that it might be the reason why most aged gamblers get addicted but I don't know if retirement is also what makes them to become addicted to gamble since they no longer have something else to do all day and night. However people who gamble mostly are gamblers with jobs, like we already know that one gamble not afford to gamble without having any money. So poverty might not be the actual reasons why there a lot of addicted gamblers in Philippine.

This type of regulations is what is needed in my country right now, although it doesn't have to be this hard to regulate like it is in the Philippines but something that look more into the gambling sector at least regulating it promotions within the country, this is very important to help get under age gambling in check because if you can see the rate of gambling addiction you see under age to be most.

How do you think this current government in power in Nigeria will do it? I don't even think the political state actors will have that on their top 20 of things to do on the priority list. There's insecurity to battle with. There's inflation which is bitting deep into our economy. There's unemployment to the point or no return now. All that is already overwhelming them.

Also, remember that our politicians are self-centred and will do all they can to protect their businesses. Some of them own businesses that should be checkmated because of their suspicious activities but who's going to do it among them? One of the members of the national assembly runs a bet shop. For someone like that, regulating such will seem like an attack on them too.

I don't think that old people are attached to gambling and have the hope of making a fortune from gambling. Only the young ones do have such mindset, because they don't understand what gambling is for and they are looking for a short cut to riches. Age people already understand the purpose of gambling from experience because they have been gambling since their youthful age. They only gamble for fun. Check how many people have committed suicide due to heavy loss or check out the age of addicted gamblers around you. None of them is above 50.

The older we are, the more capable we are of facing situations that put us at risk of addiction. Time gives wisdom. I don't think older people are at risk of gambling addiction. I'd like to think they're a very small percentage, unlike younger people.

I think the favorite game of older people is bingo, not casinos or slot machines.


The poverty and gambling thing is quite normal, since most people gamble for money, and that makes them a possible candidate.

Their aim is to earn money through gambling. In addition, people get pleasure from gambling, relieve boredom or loneliness, and some people also gamble for the surrounding environment. The tendency to gamble is usually much higher among young people or young people.

Could be, it is most common activity for old folks just to spend their whole day by gambling with fellow mates and it is very common and they are not called as addicts because they know what they are doing and stay within their limits but what's different in the Philippines?

Being poor should never be a reason for someone to gamble and I think the old folks pretty aware of the risks associated with gambling so let them live their remaining life instead of just banning them which is not going to change why people are getting addicted.

I think you are right on both reasons, this are two good reason to lead one into gambling, when you are poor you tend to think that there is a way through gambling, and again the old don’t have anything to do so they get easily bored sitting alone at home, so instead they engage in gambling, Berger might even intend to start for fun before they would realize they are addicted to it already.

Age is always a factor in everything. Youth and experience are separate sides of the coin. Everything from how your mind works, to navigating risk, to knowing more consequences that keep from quick actions… There are pros and cons to both, but unless you are old, you have no idea how terrible it actually is. You are right, it's very common for old people to get addicted to gambling due to the fact that they are retired at that age and might not have any other thing to do with their time other than to gamble. Most of these old people get idle and lonely this is the reason why they get involved in gambling. If they are not being careful they spend all their retirement funds on gambling which makes them become penniless

This is true because I have often see old retirement people that normally got carried away when gambling. That is why they Always end up getting addicted to gambling because they see it as a source of income, without noing that gambling is not a place to make a living. If they notice that people are less busy and have less activity to be engaged in for leisure, they should look towards creating more activities that will also serve for relieving stress.

What causes addiction mainly is lack of jobs that got people more engaged to distract them from giving more attention to betting more often, the more time the engagement in certain activities increases, the more refocus from gambling addiction is occuring and so it's a step by step process.

Age is not a factor to consider when looking at things that make people get addicted to gambling, but it should also not be overlooked, just like every other factor. Those old retired men who choose to gamble over every other thing make that choice themselves, while some of their friends and mates choose other hobbies that can be creative.

I have seen a retired 64-year-old who still worked down at building sites and rendered his carpentry services, while his same mate was moving from one old alcoholic joint to another. There are others abusing young people on the street, while we also have those that spend their remaining life on betting grounds.

Age can't be a factor to consider when talking about addiction which can lead to gamble, maybe in philipines retirement can be a factor because of their age, loneliness and idleness must have lead to addiction .

Gamblers that gets addicted can't be tied to only the old since they are not the only ones involved in gambling, addiction can be of any age in as much as you have not being able to follow the rules and regulations of gambling, therefore expect addiction at anytime, a poor country are easily affected by her citizens because of her poor economy, in the bit of wanting to make more money, they fall into being addicted.

Yeah, I think poverty is also one of the factor that can curse high rate of addicted gamblers in a particular country. But this is not supposed to be a reason because gambling is not a source of income, moreover those money they're spending in gambling every day or week is enough to use it to start up something, this way there will be a little improvement Instead of gambling with it. Nah, old, middle aged, or even those in their early 20s, all ages, anyone can get addicted. Not to mention, the word “scatter” has become a trend. Some are even trying it just so they can say they’re part of the trend and share it with others, whether in person or online. Imo, it’s not the age, it’s the status in life that makes others depend on gambling. But I always see high rollers as well. Lol being it the poor people or the rich one, another core thing required by anyone there is discipline. You have to properly discipline yourself not to go too deeply into the gambling life. Gambling whether it's done , aside from the profits, also have serious lost which can affect their lives as young people. Young People are meant to have a properly disciplined financial approach, with more calculated risks from spendings so they know and understand when to protect their money instead for them to waste it on gambling.

I don't doubt that the age is a determining factor, but it isnt the only one. From what I've read in some articles, the risk increases when a person have more free time or fewer social connections, and then turns to gambling as a way to "fill" this void.

So, yes... retirees may be more prone, but the same is true for young people who are unemployed or in financial crisis.

I dont know much about the Philippines, but I think there's also a cultural aspect in this country where there are few affordable leisure options, so gambling is the one that attracts the most attention.

Perhaps we could say that older people are more emotionally vulnerable and isolated from society... so this increases their risk of being more prone to gambling. But I don't think it's such a relevant factor that it can be used as a parameter to say that age is a problem.
