I shared my thoughts on a very similar topic last week about online jobs, and my opinion still remains the same: while online work is growing rapidly, traditional 9 to 5 jobs are not disappearing entirely.
Online jobs such as freelancing and other remote work opportunities are clearly increasing by the day. We all saw what happened during COVID-19, so many companies shut down yet several others continued operations remotely due to digital transformation.
However, traditional jobs will still stand because online jobs can’t completely replace them. There will always be roles that require physical human presence, like lawyers, chefs, and other specialized professions.
That said, the future of work is likely to be hybrid, where both online and 9 to 5 jobs coexist. While online jobs are becoming more widespread, traditional work structures will still remain relevant.

The only jobs that won’t collapse over time with technological advancement are manual and physical labor jobs like builders, painters, installers, mechanics. Everything else will go into a freefall loop, with increasingly lower pay and an oversaturated workforce. Everyone wants to work from home and make a lot of money, which means free markets will dictate the rules: supply and demand… too much supply, increasingly lower salaries.

In many business sector, the 9-5 still continues. If a job can be done through remote work or independently of location, it's normal for companies to switch to that model. But there are some professions where you absolutely need to be physically present. Those will continue. It's perfectly normal for working life to shift into a new structure as technology advances.

As freelancing and remote work expand, is the stable, long-term job model collapsing?
Online jobs may be increasing in demand but that doesn't mean that the traditional 9-5 jobs are getting obsolete. You are wrong there. In fact, many people are still dying to get a 9-5 job. Online jobs may be here today and could be more visible in the next years, but hey traditional jobs are here forever. So there's no way that it'll turn obsolete, since traditional job makes the main job, while online job serves a side income only.

Collapse? There is no way it will happen. Online jobs may be even prone to collapse compared to this long time traditional job. The good thing about this current revolution is that people can freely chose whether to work online or offline. But traditional job for sure will stay for life because it what gives sustainable source of income for majority. People will always prefer to work on it longer as not everyone is capable to work on online jobs for quite long.

Far from happening, think of the grocery stores, salons, and other shops that are requiring to open at 9-5.
Maybe if the government starts to implement only remote jobs are available even going to the groceries we can shop online which is happening now, then the 9-5 jobs are going to be obsolete.
But I don't see that happening and it's far from happening. The global job market is tight but our lives are dependent to day so, don't forget about the usual service that we have to avail and have workers need to work for that schedule.

The narrative that 9-5 is a bad job and it's suffering is laughable. There are very good 9-5 jobs that pay well. Let's not make it look as if, as far as you work remotely or are a freelancer, then you automatically make more money than someone who does a 9-5.
No offense, but people who have this mindset usually lack good knowledge and qualifications, or they don’t put in the effort to get a good job. Because in general, the highest paying and most stable jobs today are still 9-5 jobs, with only a few exceptions in the freelance and remote work. The proof is if we look at the income and lives of people working as doctors, engineers and architects. They are living a much better life than many of us who work remotely and freelance. They have stability, advancement opportunities, and social benefits that freelancers or remote workers like us don't have.

As freelancing and remote work expand, is the stable, long-term job model collapsing?
It will take a few more generations for the traditional job model to collapse. We have not yet fully entered the digital age. Almost the majority of the world's population is still chasing traditional jobs and recognizing their slavery by corporate companies or governments. The younger generation is still unable to protect themselves from slavery, rather they are adopting slavery as their own. Some people have not yet been able to keep up with technology. Even in some societies, people are reluctant to value anything other than formal jobs. This is a bigger problem, they do not even value business properly.

in my opinion, freelance work and remote work have indeed changed the dynamics of traditional jobs, bat that doesn't mean that stable and long-term work models are collapsing.and now there are still many companies that offer permanent jobs, but we have to adapt to today's modern era.

Nah, 9 to 5 jobs are still dream for many people.
The reason why people want to work in freelances and remote jobs because they're currently work in 9 to 5 jobs, they see freelances offer better salary and other convenience that they didn't get in 9 to 5 jobs.
But, not all people can survive in freelances and remote jobs, if you're not a person who like to learn a new thing and upgrade your skill, freelances would be a nightmare for you because they could cut you off.
Do you know what's so great about freelancing? You can find your own work. It doesn't have to be a 9-to-5 job. The work simply needs to be completed by a certain deadline. If it doesn't happen, the employer will refuse to pay. There are options for full-time employment, and there are also one-time side gigs. Everyone chooses what suits them best. Even better is creating your own small online business that only takes a few hours a day. There are plenty of ways to do this now. If you have the will, you'll have the time.

You are partially right but the reality is not that simple because the opportunities for remote work have really increased due to technological advancements and many are now doing alternative work outside the restrictive routine of 9-to-5 and that is normal. However, not everyone gets equal opportunities because the idea that acquiring skills will make it easy to get a job is not always realized because the competition has already increased a lot. Another thing is that remote work does not mean that everyone is becoming self-reliant. This is not the case, many organizations still want fixed hours, team collaboration and regular presence, whether offline or online. So it cannot be said that 9-to-5 is becoming completely obsolete, but rather work flexibility is increasing and people are choosing their own way of working.

I do know the flexibility of freelance jobs, but it's only for people who wanted by many companies. The best thing of freelance jobs is you can show your talent and you can work with anyone in the whole world, unlike in physical jobs, only close people or few companies know you. So, you will be in competitive market where company willing to pay high to retain you otherwise other company can easily hijack other employees. It's really important for other people to know you because that could increase your salary.

Not really. Some CEO want to see their employee WFO, especially in a big company. There are many remote job these days compared to back then but company still need full time employee like people have described. Like how elon musk telling his work to do WFO and some of other CEOs. Anyway it hugely depends on the job.

I think covid changed much. People used to be forced to drive to work and stay there from 9 to 5. And later they had to work remote from home. So they got to wake up later and finish at the same time because they didnt have to commute to work.
Since they worked from home, many could work odd hours like evenings and weekends because it was easier. So the more remote work and less 9-5 time schedule became the norm. However many employers dont like remote work. They find the employees are unproductive, they usually dont focus 100% on work instead they do chores around the house or play with their kids. This is why Elon was against working from home from the beginning because it decreases productivity.

No 9 - 5 jobs will continue to exist, maybe you are just overwhelm with current situation you see but those WFH set up thing will not change anything. Competition is so tight in this industry so not everyone will became successful on these matters. Also not all are comfortable to leave their comfort zone since they think that kind of set up is unstable that's why we cannot expect a collapsing matters since that cycle will continue to exist for many more years even if we say that digitalization and modern tech is growing.

It doesn't matter if the 9-to-5 jobs are a dream for the people. What matters the most is will the employers keep hiring people full time. AI is expanding, freelance and part-time jobs are more popular than ever. Maybe some industries would simply stop hiring people on 9-to-5 jobs and focus on AI integration and outsourcing multiple tasks to part-time working freelancers. I can assume that most of the "brick-and-mortar" industries would still rely on full time employees, until AI robots become affordable and productive enough to replace the humans. When the AI robots replace us, we will have to rely on universal basic income for our survival.

It's not all jobs that can be done remotely and even for the ones that can be done remotely, there's still the need for a physical location which still means that you can't do away with physical jobs. Jobs under the category of teaching, medicine, engineering, and a host of other ones like tailoring and other skilled jobs will continue to take the forum of 9 to 5 nature and regardless of the advancement of technology, such kind of jobs will remain the way they are. The current jobs that allows you to work from home are still a big deal but it doesn't take out the fact that physical jobs will never go obsolete not now or in times to come.

It's not collapsing but it's indeed becoming valueless. The reason why it is not yet collapsed is because people will continue to milk out of it without making any contribution as long as government or their employers keep paying. The traditional jobs don't want to utilize this opportunity to shift toward the new age technology. The current generation are not buying the idea of their slavery with fixed salary, poor working condition and less freedom. The present condition of traditional jobs is still fair, if they fail to make changes to align with the present reality, they will have to beg people to fill their vacancies but no one will look back.
I don't agree with this. The fact that freelance and remote jobs are increasing doesn't mean traditional 9-5 jobs are becoming valueless. We need to stop the urge to make everything mutually exclusive. The rise of remote jobs and freelancing does not mean the death of traditional 9-5 jobs. Both of them will always coexist. As for the new generation, more will go back to the usual 9-5 jobs because, with more responsibility, they will want stability. I'm not saying everybody will become a 9-5 worker, but a lot of the "current generation" won't be able to rely on their remote jobs when they start becoming parents and having more responsibilities. The narrative that 9-5 is a bad job and it's suffering is laughable. There are very good 9-5 jobs that pay well. Let's not make it look as if, as far as you work remotely or are a freelancer, then you automatically make more money than someone who does a 9-5. I totally agree with you because 9-5 jobs are some peoples dream job. They just want to have the feeling of waking up in the morning all dressed up and go to work. Most persons that do remote and freelance job, actually do it because of unemployment. so remote jobs become an alternative and even there are some people who work remotely and are still looking for 9-5 jobs. They know they cannot depend only on remote jobs, there are even better chances of growing with a 9-5 job than a remote job because they are still very good paying 9-5 jobs e.g the oil and gas industry.

As freelancing and remote work expand, is the stable, long-term job model collapsing?
In my environment or my country there are still many jobs that work 8 hours, but this is more applied in large companies such as factories or PT, because if with ordinary jobs such as employees of restaurants, coffee shops or others they tend to work longer hours even I once asked someone who works in a restaurant if he works for 12 hours sometimes more than 12 hours. Actually, in my opinion working for a full day is not a problem if the salary is in accordance with working hours but in my environment there are quite a lot of jobs outside factories or PTs where the working hours are all day but the salary is not much and with those who work I understand because it is difficult to get a job so they have no choice but to do it rather than not having a job at all.
