It's common because you get to see the people who earn a lot and you assume that the same thing could happen to you as well, but turns out it is not that easy. This is the gamblers fallacy and it makes people lose a lot of money as well. In theory they think they are right, because if you wager a game where you have 50% chance to win, losing 8 times is unlikely and if you do then 9th time must be a win right? Wrong, that 9th time is still 50% chance and not a single more.

I guess I'm understanding the point @lida is trying to make, and by that I mean he is only trying to emphasize that by being experienced as a gambler don't stop you from losing even while gambling, but it's only just that it gives you an edge into making more calculated entry in all games, which are likely to end in profit. But in a scenario as O.P portrays above regarding the inability of gamblers stop chasing losses, is the reason why majority are addicted today.
