I want to know; who is a gambler and what are the characteristics of a gambler?

A gambler is anyone that place bets, stake some funds and undergo some level of risks, encounter loses and want to recover them, the fact that you do something in return of something makes you a gambler. In a lame man word when you place bets on a game,some unusual things in exchange of another that act qualifies you as a gambler. it seems some persons labels themselves as gamblers but there's nothing so special by bragging or calling oneself a gambler.

Your definition is not far with what gambling is all about, I understand gambling as a process of using what you have to get a higher version of what you have, and such process is a risk, and the thing is that it's all about risk, and you will not know if the risk will be profitable or not, when you talk about gambling, it's not all about casino kind off or soccer or cricket, even business is also a gambling,  but some of us doesn't understand such that gambling involve in our business, we gamblers think that gambling is all about casinos only

Yeah, I also agreed with you, gambling can have several definitions base on everyone's perspectives and understanding. From my own perspective and understanding, I will consider a gambler to a person who takes risks by betting on specific things or events, such as sports, games or any other activities, or someone who participates in casino or online betting platforms in order to win money or something valuable, often with the hopes that may be unrealistic.

Gambling shouldn’t always be associated with taking risks. When we talk about risk, we are talking about the possibility of something unwanted or harmful happening, and this shouldn’t always be the case in gambling, except of course you’re gambling solely for profit, because that’s the only time that you just wanna win so badly and losses seem like a big deal. A true gambler expects the losses, so it’s no longer unwanted because you’ve already accepted the fact that losses are inevitable and part of the game, neither is it harmful because regardless of the outcome of the game, you still end up having fun.

Well, I will just assume that you are speaking from your perspectives, and there is no way I will deny any of your statements, because that might be from your understanding and point of view.

But from my point of view, what is gambling without risks?

Every gambler is a risk taker, gambling is all about risk taking, and nothing can be done in order to change that. I can't deny the fact that gambling is for excitement and entertainment, but no matter how it is, if you lost money that you work very hard for, you will definitely feel it no matter how small it is before it comes to pass. Because a heart can endure the thrill of victory, but it often finds the sting of defeat unbearable, the joy of winning lifts the spirit while the pain of loss can weigh it down far more heavily.

Yes, it might be the choice of the gambler to bet or gambling, and from the moment they decided to bet, they already know that their money is at risks, because there's a big possibility for them to lose if luck is not on their side.

Gambler is someone who gamble and they don't choose to quit forever.

That's my definition of a gambler, so if a person gamble for everyday, other person gamble every week, and other one gamble without any certain period of time (he do whenever he wants), all of them are gamblers.

I concur @Makus Indeed there has been a lot of misunderstandings and silly talks about gambler, and yeah some folks sees we gamblers as smoker, drunks or people with bi self control. Really folks are not supposed to use the behavior of just a few gamblers to judge the entire group, that's just so inaccurate and bad.... The act of gambling m, isn't in itself bad, it is the gambler/person involved that makes gambling look bad/evil....Not all gamblers are reckless/with no self control like most folks thinks. There are some that are properly disciplined and responsible. So people really need to stop using a few bad eggs to judge all.

And in response to the OP question, well I will say that gambling has no universal definition, it's definition is more personal and subjective. I may see gambling as a means for entertaining myself and another may see from another different dimension.

Well, I would not say responsibility is an important factor to know some people are gamblers or not. There can be gamblers who are responsible while at the same time there can be irresponsible gamblers, who put their livelihood at stake for the sake of money and thrill.

Also, being a risk taker does not necessarily means ones is a gambler, not in the traditional sense of the word, I mean. There will be people who take risk in the stock market, because they have chosen to be traders, and yet some would argue those people are investors, not gamblers. It is a very subjective definition.

it is natural to call someone a gambler if they gamble but many times we see people gambling just for fun with friends and they are not addicted to it. their friends are playing so they join in just for enjoyment. would you call that person a gambler? i would not. i think someone should be called a gambler only when they gamble again and again over time and become addicted. being addicted to gambling is one thing and playing for fun is another. i have seen many people who start gambling just for fun and later become deeply addicted. when gambling is taken as a profession it creates many problems in life because losing money damages mental health increases tension and even kind words can make them angry. this happens to most gamblers. however if a person becomes addicted to gambling then they can definitely be called a gambler but in my opinion if someone gambles for fun for one or two days they cannot be called a gambler.

If someone goes to a casino and plays some games for a day, then comes back after some time, that person is not considered a gambler, or we can say a real gambler, because they are not thinking about it all the time, not spending more money, and are not affected by gambling. They can just bet with the money they can afford to lose, and if they lose, they leave. This can be called just entertainment.

However, if you are affected by it, spending all the money that you can't afford to lose, hiding your gambling activities, and doing anything just to arrange money, chasing a huge win, then you can be called a real gambler because it can take over their life in a harmful way.

In short, if a person sings once, they can't be called a singer because they are not a singer, they just did it once for fun. The same is true for gambling. I hope you can understand this.

There is almost no reason to overcomplicate things. A gambler is simply anyone that is simply to take risk on a chance. If something ita guaranteed or set in stone but you're willing to give it a shot, then you're a gambler. That's the simplest way to understand who a gambler is. Imo, that definitely works well even if it's for sportsbetting, casino bets or life in general. That's really who a gambler is or what they do.

It's the same thing. I don't think it matters if you place bets once a day/week/month or year. As long as you are willing to take risk on a chance-based event beyond your control, that's gambling.

First of all you can not talk about gambling without mentioning the risk so I will say a gambler is a risk taker the moment you can actually take a risk then you are one that can be seen as  one who has the mind of a gambler

It is true that although we might quit gambling after just one experience, our position can still be said to be a part of the gambling group though that may be many years ago. This concerns more to the broad meaning of the past behaviour, and not our present active position. Other habits, e.g. smoking or alcohol drinking, although stopped, also leave some trace in our lives. The knowledge of this would aid us in making a broader view of the decisions we made in the past.

If they gamble today and not tomorrow and for the next days, that should be fine. What matters is on how you see yourself.

If you gamble for a period of time does not mean that you are no longer a gambler, maybe he was busy with something else, a gambler does not necessarily means that you should be a daily gambler, you can even gamble ones a year and forget about gambling, some gamblers that are not that chances plan their games towards that way and gamble hugely since their work will not permit, gambling is only done when you are chances, if not you will end up become an addict.
