Best way to help an addicted gambler

In my point of view this is very challenging case since despite fact that father is doing this due to strong intention of trying to help his son, use of military force to lock him up for period of two years is very extreme action that may cause more harm than good. Although father is correct in that it can take long time to get chemistry of brain to normal when one is not gambling, just forcing person to quit without training them on how to deal with stress or boredom does not normally work. Once son is no longer in jail, temptation to gamble in mind will probably still be there. Such punishment may also lead to much anger and trauma that may ruin relationship between father and son forever. Other than jail, more likely it is better to use firm but supportive methods, like blocking gambling sites with software or taking son to professional treatment center where he can receive medical and mental health help. So, arrest is punishment other than cure and it would probably be more effective to use that power to have son put in quality help program where he can actually learn how to change his life.

Military services may teach him about many things but if his mind is not changed, he may return to gambling. Maybe he can take his son to rehabilitation to get the right medication and he will be in the right hands that know what he needs.

He needs to open his son's mind to understand the situation and how to fix the problem. His son needs to admit that he is addicted to gambling and must get helps to cure his gambling addiction.

Like we keep talking about once the person makes a gamble and they enjoy the feeling of it, they will seek that everytime so thats like what does hes son experienced the fun and entertainment, like the emotion it gives to him and satisfaction. But i guess thats quite exaggerated about use of military influence just to pull up his son, most of that is to recommend having a  rehabilitation now of course thats way to long it happens before get cured but at least there's a progress now if the parent does not have a budget its way too long story at the first place they need to convince their son to at least change his habiits and find a new way to get entertained that does not have a gambling related.

I tend to agree with this idea.
Yes, forcing him to stop gambling might result in his son becoming rebellious and sometimes may think badly about himself, like commit suicide.

IMO, it could be the best option is to talk nicely and guide his son to divert into non-gambling activities, so he can forget about gambling sometimes or find another way, like how his son gets money as a source for gambling.  Because if you are a good example to them, they listen to you and do what isn't right for them.

It depends on the son's character. If he is quite tough and vengeful, knowing that it was his own father who sent him to prison, it could turn out badly. But there are also children who become better after being in prison or undergoing discipline in a military barracks. Each case cannot be equated when it comes to the solution. Some children are easy to advise, but some are difficult. Overcoming a gambling addiction is not easy; the most important thing is the interest and determination of the addict themselves to recover.

Man, I feel bad for that addicted guy. He's going to experience more mental problems if that old man do that to his son.

It will cause more fear to him and if he sees some military men in uniform nearby him, that might cause him more panic and anxiety because he'll remember the arrest.

We're all grown up to realize that there are respective ways in helping others to overcome their problems. The harder part to deal with is by causing mental and emotional trouble.

I dont think this is even the solution from addiction because it is possible to lock him up and when he is out he goes back to gambling again.  In case like this you have to go about it with wisdom and in a way that their will be solution at the end. I think getting free from addiction the person needs to be aware and understand he really needs help and he should also be willing to stop gambling,  but if these are not there, their is nothing you can do about. In gambling addiction if you are not ready to be free from it, nobody can help you to be free from gambling addiction.

Maintenance of order by arresting or taking the son into military service will not be the solution to the underlying issue which is gambling addiction. Addiction is a mental problem and nothing can alter the minds of a person just by making him or her be punished. Rehabilitation will be more appropriate as it allows the professionals to offer adequate treatment, counseling, and support. Above all, the father must make contact with his son and make him see the implications of gambling. The only way aside is the recovery, which starts when the son acknowledges his addiction and voluntarily seeks help.

I agree with you. Gambling addiction is not a violation of the law or a crime for which a son should practically be arrested for two years. It’s more like an illness that needs to be treated in a private clinic. For that, you need specialists in this field — psychologists.

I think that after two years of arrest, his son would come out angry at his father and would gamble even more, trying to make up for the days he lost.

Technically, it’s effective since his son will not gonna gamble for 2 years guaranteed but it’s just a band aid solution and the effects might be worsen since the son might enter on rebellion phase which he will not follow to the father words anymore.

Consulting to professional about the proper steps is the appropriate method to do rather than being reckless since his son involved here and putting him in jail is not morally right.

I will personally not support this method because it will at some point be detrimental to the boy, that will deny him some social life and may affect him mentally, solitary confident will not help as much, yes he may quit gambling but he will not be the same again, a whole lot of things will definitely change in his life, he will not be the same person he was at the time before he got arrested and confined for years, it will be far more better if he is sent to a rehabilitation center or home to get him into changing and becoming a better person, that will work far more better for him and give him the kind of personality they look to see in him than sending him to jail or prison for the longest and he will change in another direction that will still require him to be rehabilitated in order to have him back to his better self.

That's very immature in my view because locking up in a prison for 2 years is not a solution.
What if it creates an adverse effect on him and he starts other illegal things due to the company in a prison.
It would be better to send him to some kind of meditation camp or rehabilitation center or some foundation where he can cleanse himself of this habit.

An option like this can only be applied if and when all other options have been tried and exhausted and yet no improvement in the gambling life of the addict.

I've never been to prison before and by the grace of God, I will never see the four walls of any prison but based on what I've heard and read about prisons, it is said that no one goes there, spend a week and come out the same.
So, if the said person is a chronic addict to gambling and it's absolutely destroying his life, then some thing like this can be applied, enforced on him if after all other options have been applied and no change.

If the level of addiction has reached the stage of addiction, the appropriate treatment is rehabilitation. This is no longer about entertainment or just having fun. It's about the mental damage caused by the addiction. If left untreated, it could worsen and lead to undesirable consequences.

In my opinion, military treatment is inappropriate, because not all problems can be solved through military means, including gambling addiction.

Its an understandable desperation especially from a parent who feels helpless watching thier child struggled. But gambling addiction is not simply a habit that disappears when access is remove, it is a behavioral and psychological disorder. Forcing someone into confinement without treatment many stop the act temporarily but it does not address the underlying triggers, emotional dependencies or the thought patterns driving the addiction. While yes, firm boundaries are important, recovery works best when the individual is helped to understand their behavior, develop coping mechanisms and feel supported rather than criminalized.

I don't think prison addresses the root of the problem it only temporarily stops physical access to gambling, but it doesn't change the underlying mindset or habits of the addiction. Once released, the risk of relapse is very high. The brain does not adjust automatically without therapy, change takes a long time and support from parents is very necessary. I think in this case, parents should limit and monitor, record every time parents give money to their children. With this approach, children cannot easily access the funds for gambling, while building self control.

Such method will be working for a person who is getting chronic addiction. If his son has no yet reached such level, he should use addiction therapy. In my country, there is a province that used military disciplinary to solve gambling addiction when it reaches the level damaged addiction, and it's worked. So i think when his son has not yet reached damaged addiction, it's better to use softer method.

From my experience, gambling addiction can be stopped when someone can ignore gambling for a long period of time. If, for example, his father's plan is carried out by arresting him and sentencing him to two years, that means he won't have access to gambling.

To be honest, I've also managed to overcome my addiction in a similar way. I mean, I try my hardest to avoid gambling because if I don't gamble for even a week or two, my interest in gambling automatically diminishes.

It is not a good idea at all, the best is rehabilitation. If his son do not want to go for rehab should be when he can be provoked. But his son is over 18 at least, he should not use power to abuse him.

Without a doubt rehabilitation is the best if anyone wants to get free from addiction, but using force on someone for the good of the person is not a bad idea because the end result is the key thing, so restriction seems  like the best approach if the guy doesn't want to go for rehabilitation, which we all know that force will be needed in other to implement it.

If he is the one giving the son money, he should reduce it significantly to only the money necessary for the son and let him know the reason and how he wants him to change for good.

Reducing it will not make him stop gambling because as long as their is still funds, he would rather stay hungry than not gambling, so he should stop giving him money, but make sure to provide any basic things he may needs.
