I recently read in the media: "Paying the thirteenth salary is the employer's right, not their obligation." That's why very few people in my country receive a Christmas bonus. It's also worth noting that we celebrate Christmas on January 7th, not December 25th (like everywhere else). This is because the local church observes religious holidays according to the old calendar, not the new one. Therefore, we don't even have the concept of a Christmas bonus.

There is such a thing as a year-end bonus. It is usually paid based on performance at the company and is determined as a percentage of the average salary. Very often, such a bonus is less than the average salary.

I've never encountered a situation where an employee lost their entire annual bonus gambling. Although such cases have probably happened. I can't blame such people. In our country, New Year's is celebrated on the night between December 31st and January 1st. People try to relax after a long period of nervous tension by drinking heavily.  So if they gamble and lose their annual bonus, that's their own business. They're adults and can do whatever they want. I've never done that myself. I usually spend my annual bonus on New Year's gifts for my family and friends.🎂

I have seen someone who made such mistakes since the money was an extra pay , he thought using it for gambling won't be an issue. This how most gambler do spend there extra cash since they can easily afford to lose it , without it affecting them in any way. Gambler should always set a limit in terms of how much they can used in gambling a day. If they can make it part of there gambling routine and sticking to it no matter the extra cash they received, it won't be wasted on gambling.

We can only tell them what to do and suggest but we can't dictate them and force them to follow what we think is right for them. If these gamblers can't do that much to themselves for preserving that Christmas bonus, that's what they can do to make themselves well by spending it all. If they are reckless spenders and they don't mind of doing that, why should be bothered by that? Because if they are not even bothered doing that and spending all of it and not allotting it to other things, why should be worried about them?

Maybe it depends on personal financial capability of the person since if he have lots of extra funds to spend came from their Christmas bonuses then they have chance to allow their selves to allocation some funds and gamble while they can pay attention also with their responsibilities as grown up man.

Some people will take care first on the needs of their family and this is really fine especially that bonuses they get from their employer is their hard earned money. So much really better if they use it for other more good things which their family can enjoy.

Proper balancing and set aside good portion for important expenses also they could add up savings is important, also they can allocate some small funds for them to enjoy whether they like it to spend on gambling.

Well I don’t know where you live but it seem like it’s in a place filled with gambling activities like the Las Vegas area. People seem to gamble away there extra money knowing that it will not affect them and it’s just an extra I believe that why it has become random is that they somehow during the festive season try to double it if they can spend extremely large during the holidays and also knowing that yes the amount is so small that it can be lost without too much being thought of.

Still, regardless of the location, gambling away all the christmas bonus is an act of irresponsibility. I get it that some people treat their christmas bonus as extra money, but hey, you can buy a lot of it and gift your loved ones, but trying to gamble all of them for the sake of greed and irresponsible gambling, that will only lead to a negative outcome. Gambling is never bad, but if you gamble a valuable amount, gambling will never be good at all. Its supposed to entertain you, not to harm you financially and emotionally.

Of course it’s a merely entertainment but not regarded as entertainment for many , it’s a money doubling scheme that can be used to as ease but however you understand that not everyone will value things or want to make things for the satisfaction of family, you might think because one gambles away their bonus they have no support for family, I could have provided for family already and have enough left over yet the extra for gambling so it’s not bad yet except one goes beyond the normal which is touch amount that one can’t lose.

There is definitely something everyone prioritizes and for some, gambling is their priority, so you won't blame them when they get such gift or bonus money from the company where they work for Christmas and they end up spending it all on gambling.

This is what they like and this is possibly where they derive their own type of enjoyment from.
But let's be honest, the reason why we all think spending Christmas bonus on gambling is wrong is because gambling is hard to win, what if a gambler in the process gets lucky and win a huge sum of money like the one we saw in the news that won billions in dollar on Christmas day from lottery?

There is this saying that "you don't value what you did not work for" and that's totally not false because in this case the bonus is something that was not worked for but rather compensation for the hard work aside salaries. It takes only a disciplined person to spend the money on something worthwhile, take for instance, a married man would not want to lavish that money on gambling if he realizes he has a family at home that should be taken care of.

But then again it's a bonus right? That does not justify the reckless way of using the money still,  as true discipline and sense of responsibility would be seen raw in this case of acquired bonuses, even more when you labor for it. This pattern exists in many places and it has become more visible over time especially where bonuses or extra salaries are guaranteed by law or tradition. When people receive money they did not mentally account for in their regular monthly budget they often treat it differently. Instead of seeing it as income that should be planned they see it as free money even though it clearly is not. That psychological framing changes behavior almost immediately.

A Christmas bonus or extra salary is usually earned through months of work but because it arrives all at once people detach it from responsibility. Gambling thrives on this mindset because it promises excitement quick results and emotional release at a time when people already feel festive or stressed. For some it becomes a way to amplify the feeling of reward. The problem is that once gambling is involved that extra income loses its purpose and disappears without adding any lasting value.

These is totally wrong, my company also do the same thing every Christmas but none of us go this extend because I see no reason why someone would purposely use money meant to celebration to chase for more money for something that you don't know the final outcome. It is not just a sign of addiction but it is an addiction.

But it is not an addiction if the person only used the extra money to gamble and see it stupid and not do it again. But in most cases, anyone that do something like that would probably have been addicted to gamble already and would have been wasting money on gambling. The extra salary will not be what caused it but the person would have been wasting money on gambling before.

Yeah, I have seen this a lot of times. It's actually easy to identify those who gambled their Christmas bonuses. They tend to get a loan from their officemates, and I have been approached many times by officemates to lend them money. I know they are gamblers, and I don't really mind lending them some money because they badly need it for their fare going back and forth to the office every day until their next salary. They will pay without any problem, but there are times when it will be paid after January. Yes, they need to recover first.

It's sad that it happens, and that's what I always tell my wife. We don't need to spend too much money during Christmas. It's a day to think about Christ and not to have a feast. So a small amount of food to share will suffice. It should also be a sacrifice to avoid gambling at these events.

There’s no problem gambling as long as it’s with money you can afford to lose. It might signify a bit of a problem if you’re gambling away Christmas bonuses instead of using that money for something better.

In most government settings in my place, workers use to get extra bonuses at the end of the year. The most is receiving that of a salary of extra one month to make it 13 months but most time they don’t get up to that but less than their one month salary.

For someone that has a lot on them to do during this Xmas period, using all that money to gamble is a very high risk idea that can end in regrets. Just because you get extra money as bonuses doesn’t mean you should misuse them and risk them all in gambling.

If you start off like this, even when you win in gambling, you’ll still want to make use of all your profits and even capital to gamble again not respecting your risk management strategy. Every single move has its after effects, you just have to be careful how you play the games and not end up being at your disadvantage.

What I noticed with most people is that, those that got a lot of salary bonuses this season tend to increase their spending in every phase, and for that reason there have to increase their gambling budget also, alot of that is part of the major problem that come with this season, knowing that we have all the time to spend with family since it the holidays season and we gat time for more of everything.

To be honest, this happened recently. The Christmas bonus money he was supposed to give to his wife was instead used for gambling, and it happened right when we were hanging out that night. He thought if he used the bonus money to gamble and made a profit, wouldn't his wife be happy because her bonus money would double.

I think, anyway, it is a bonus money, either from work or perhaps given by a family member as a Christmas gift. Of course, it is not an issue how someone wants to spend that money. You can also allocate the bonus for investment, but during the holiday season like this, some people would choose to use the bonus money to have fun.

Not really a good idea, you have a lot of explaining to do with your wife if you gamble away your bonus, wives expect that money for the holidays, your wife will not let you in without that bonus

A Christmas bonus is a one-time bonus meant to be spent on the holiday. It's foolishness to just throw it away in gambling; you'll have a blue Christmas if you do that.

Come to think of it, as it's described as Christmas bonus doesn't imply to be one of those free funds that we usually say such is meant for gambling since it's just a gaming experience for entertainments.
Christmas is an annual event and when you've a job that earns you Christmas bonuses, you should of course make responsible budgets for it as much you makes budgetsz of how you spends your salaries and not to spend it wauwardly like it can't solve any of your financial needs.
So definitely if wife is aware that you gets Christmas bonuses on every of the seasonal holidays, she'll definitely be expecting it and you should give account to it else you'll have yourself speechless before your dear wife. Lol

That's a really interesting way to spend the bonus given to us on the festive period. Even if the reason for the bonus is not specified, I can say for free that having extra money for family hangouts should be part of it. Everyone needs to be carried along and love to be spread, and it should not be for the person to see the extra cash as something surplus to be spent on gambling.
