The most surprising thing is just the opposite. Over the last couple of years, I haven't seen my colleagues spending money on gambling at the end of the year. We are now at an age when almost everyone has a family, and most of our spending goes on them, with Christmas bonuses spent on gifts for loved ones or purchases for the home. When we were younger, bonuses were spent on entertainment, but now everything has changed.
Majority of the people who can afford to gamble away a whole sum like are mostly unmarried people who also don't have any responsibility at their hand, this is the only reason I can think of to be responsible for such actions, as someone that have Bill payments waiting, gambling with your Christmas bonuse will be the last thing on your mind.

Where I'm from we still have 14 salaries mandated by law and on Christmas every private sector worker that has been with the same company for over a few months receives a full salary extra in full.

What I've noticed recently is that many people tend to go gambling and some even gamble away their full salary.
It used to be that this extra salary was given to gifts and some was saved.

But now people don't take it into account for their budgeting and instead use the whole of it as if it was a random small windfall.

Do you have similar experiences with your colleague that gamble knowing they will almost certainly waste away their Christmas bonus?

I haven't had such experience and there is no such thing in my place but I see that as a normal thing that people always do I mean anyone who is a gambler will always play bet or gamble whenever they are gifted something ( money). especially when it is extra I mean money outside their salary, a gambler will always gamble but a none gambler will never do such and using such money to gamble is not wrong but they should have limitations and use it properly and not in an abusive way. Everybody wants to double up their money so that's why they gamble.

Many people prefer to spend their Christmas bonuses on things they enjoy, such as hobbies, and gambling is often one of those choices. It’s not unusual for people to use extra income or bonuses to gamble, hoping to double their money, but many end up losing it all instead. When young people focus on gambling rather than investing or managing their money wisely, it shows a need for better financial education. Learning basic financial skills can help them make smarter decisions and use their bonuses in ways that benefit them in the long run.

We dont have 14 salaries, even not 13 and our annual bonus usually comes when operational year is finished/annual bookkeeping balance is closed (in my company it is in May) and that bonus is never is the same size as salary. But for many, those bonuses are like free money which they waste as "easy come, easy go". So if a person wants to waste whole 14th salary on gambling, it is up to him. I see nothing bad in it. That person might not even put a little effort to get those money (and whole work was done by his colleagues, and they should be thanked for a great company results), so its really a free money for him.

Absolutely right. Youth is probably given to us precisely so that we can have more fun, because there are no financial burdens. I thought about it and realized that everyone around me is already married, and there are no longer any people who can afford a wild lifestyle.

That’s what adulting means. We already have a responsibility and priorities in life that’s why everyone should enjoy youth while they have time.

I spend most of my youth on my job since I’m from a poor family but right now when I’m already financially stable I don’t have someone to do things which I want to do when I’m youth because all of them is already focus with their own family.

I’m just spending now most of my time my family enjoying trips and vacation then online gambling on some of my free time.

Not really a good idea, you have a lot of explaining to do with your wife if you gamble away your bonus, wives expect that money for the holidays, your wife will not let you in without that bonus Cheesy

A Christmas bonus is a one-time bonus meant to be spent on the holiday. It's foolishness to just throw it away in gambling; you'll have a blue Christmas if you do that.

Yep, gambling with Christmas bonus is the worst mistake ever. Because that bonus is supposed to serve as a gift from the company which you are meant to use it in a way you wouldn't regret, so gambling with your Christmas bonus is the worst idea ever. And even if I'm the wife I won't take it likely to be frank, no matter how big or small the bonus is you're supposed to take it home and then discuss with your wife And children on how to spend it. I wonder why a guy will decide to gamble with his Christmas bonus when there's cash, or maybe they think there might be a little change if they bet with Christmas bonus but that doesn't make any sense at all.
Gamblers don't think about the regrets until they must have ended up losing all their bonuses. most of them gamble with their bonus because they assume that it is an extra money that they can risk to get more, that's just the psychology of a gambler. But you like said, gambling with a Christmas bonus isn't really a smart thing to do because you are meant to use it to sort out bills for the family.

I consider it to be a very bad decision, taking into account that if one has a family, the year-end bonus is generally intended to cover important expenses, debts, seasonal expenses, or savings. Spending that money on gambling can even break family trust, which translates into problems.

Now, if it is a single person, that money could be allocated to more productive things, such as savings or investment. In the end, everyone decides how to spend their money, but I would take into account that when it comes to betting, there is nothing that guarantees that you will win.

Hi  Wink

I don’t have friends like that. I think it’s stupid to lose a bonus or prize money on gambling. I’d rather buy some Christmas gifts for my relatives.
Although a long time ago I had a friend who, every time he got his salary, went straight to place sports bets. Sometimes he won big money, but in the end he always lost it all back on betting. Gambling addiction is a disease. Roll Eyes
Don't let the bonus money be considered as money found on the side of the highway, not like that, usually bonuses are given at Christmas for your performance during work.

I will consider the same bonus money spent on gambling, this is not important while giving gifts to family or relatives is much better in normal thinking.

OK let's say that person only uses a little money to gamble, for me it doesn't matter as long as you still enjoy the money in a wise way.

Do you have similar experiences with your colleague that gamble knowing they will almost certainly waste away their Christmas bonus?

I personally know someone who gambled majority of her life savings to the point that she drowned in debt. Lots of loan sharks started calling all the possible numbers that she is connected to, including her parents and relatives. It also came to a point where these loan sharks posted comments on FaceBook posts of my friend that prompted her parents to step-in and pay all the debts.

Unfortunately, despite all of these help that she had, she still continued her gambling addiction despite having a stable job. Last time I heard from my friend, she's at their home staying with her parents and all access to money and even online gambling applications are restricted.

Of course it’s a merely entertainment but not regarded as entertainment for many , it’s a money doubling scheme that can be used to as ease but however you understand that not everyone will value things or want to make things for the satisfaction of family, you might think because one gambles away their bonus they have no support for family, I could have provided for family already and have enough left over yet the extra for gambling so it’s not bad yet except one goes beyond the normal which is touch amount that one can’t lose.
The money you have to spare so to speak is an initial law that helps to save the wealth against the loss caused by emotional judgments at the game table. You show maturity by taking out force of periodic income and operating funds on high risk personal fun. The financial stability of the family is not going to be jeopardised as long as the ground between these two kinds of money is well sealed off. Keeping a regular budget is important so that our future is not compromised.
That is an underrated fact that the guy in the op showed but it’s seemed like op himself judged him from his own angle and some other guys judging from their person life and how hard it is to handle money meanwhile the person in questions shows more responsibility by only sticking to a limited amount of money for gambling and that is obviously an extra that he or she could probably use in taking bottles of drinks for personal pleasure but however he chose not to use it in that manner instead use it to gamble with hope to win yet knowing that losing is inevitable, that is something only a few will be able to do. If he had won bigger people would have said different things other than what they seem to refer to him as irresponsible gambler.

That's illicit generalization mate. Yeah, the percentage of people who can afford to gamble more are usually those who are young, unmarried and have less or no responsibilities. But, I know many who are married and not that rich but still gamble a lot and can't even call them addicted because things are going fine for them and able to sustain it for years now.

I don't see a problem with people gambling their Xmas bonus because it's the same as spending it on another hobby, here you at least have the chance to make it into something big. But yeah, it's ok only if done in control and not because of addiction.

In my country, some companies do this as well, paying the full 12 months and even a 13th-month salary as a bonus for Christmas and New Year.
I can recall the company I used to work at did the same pattern. I don't know that much about how my colleagues spend those funds, but I do know some are gambling addicts, and it takes only a gambling addict to engage in such irrational spending.
Some might actually spend some, though, but spending all shows another level of addiction.

I bet that work is not their main source of income, or they are simply irresponsible fools. Okay, maybe they're not fools, but they're still not family people. I think it's okay to spend 1/14 of your salary on entertainment over the course of a year, but not all at once. I have friends who spend "unplanned" money very easily and in vain, but I would not call a salary (even in the form of a bonus) unexpected income. Basic incomes need to be taken more seriously. If you want to have fun, it's better to earn extra money first and then spend it.

Recently I have not seen my colleagues spending their end of year money on gambling, most of us now have families so their spending goes to their homes, to thier children and some as gifts to their loved ones. Let me also use this medium to say marriage is a blessing to many of them, plenty of them have actually stopped gambling since they got married because what they have now is not even enough for them to eat with their family talk more of using it to gamble. When we were younger bonuses were used more for entertainment purposes, like if you make money from an outing or so, you still spend it on intangible things, but now even if you are not married, the economy does not allow you to be spending on unnecessary things again.

I think it is a common thing for people to treat bonuses as extra money and try to double it through gambling but slot of people get to lose instead of winning. And when they come to lose they lose everything including the bonuses money they got earlier. When people choose gambling over investing or proper money management it points to a gap in financial education but with a better understanding of basic financial skills, they can make smarter moves and use their bonuses in a ways that help them in a long term.

This is what happens when you have money that comes easily without hardwork. So am not surprised that people are gambling away their Christmas bonuses you are only looking at those who are gambling with their bonuses, there is also the class of people who also use their bonus for the purpose of luxury and so use the salary for parties and enjoyment this period. This festive period is a season full of events and so if you are not careful enough to have a budget you may end up wasting your all your money.
