I didn't quite understand what you meant about shirking household chores. It's unlikely that anyone runs away from home under the pretext of gambling, but in general, many gamblers saw it as a source of steady income. Although, of course, that's silly. Addiction just don't start from one day, it start gradually like a virus until it get spread all over beyond control. Many people that are addicted to gambling don't look out of sign of addiction, this is for both gamblers that makes money and those that don't make money, addiction goes both side ways. The only challenge is we often see that of people that gamble at loss, we don't see that of people that makes money, you can be taking money from casino and still be addicted.

While I don't have problem with a person that is addicted to gambling, if you are losing money to casino and you are making loss, there is no reason for you to be gambling. If it's not working, kindly put a stop to it or maybe you review the way you gamble and waste money on casino. Gambling addiction basically comes from gambling, those who gamble regularly and have the intention of earning money from this gambling game, this is where gambling addiction starts. And some gamblers enter gambling to earn money and quickly become addicted to gambling because they lose money in the beginning and to recover that money, they use more money, resulting in more losses. Losing that money and becoming disoriented, these gamblers show signs of addiction. Regular gambling is also a sign of addiction, so if you gamble, you will definitely notice this addiction.

Indeed, chasing losses is a trap for gamblers; this may trigger gambling addiction, but not all those trapped in chasing losses become gambling addicts.  There are surely more beyond chasing losses, why gamblers become addicted to gambling.
