Being called a gambler, compliment or insult?

We all gamble here, that’s obvious. But outside this forum, when people around you casually call you a “gambler”, how do you actually take it?

Do you feel proud and see it as some kind of compliment, like someone who takes risks and knows what they’re doing. Or do you feel a bit insulted, like it’s something negative and not really something to be proud of?

Curious how others see it, especially since gambling means different things to different people.

To be fair it can be related to tone and the purpose of doing it. Should a person refer to me as a gambler because I play every now and then to have fun I would not connote this term derogatively. Personally I just consider gambling a restricted hobby to acquiring movies or sports. However when the term is applied to indicate less responsibility or addiction then I would likely feel misconstrued.

The thing is such term as gambler is a heavy stereotype as lots of people recognise it as a losing control or the destruction of the finances. This is why I believe that behaviour is more important than the title. There is no saving to be ashamed of once your life savings and priorities are intact. On my part I would not be proud either as it is not an accomplishment. It is just an activity. What then should make us proud is discipline awareness of boundaries and withdrawal.

I don't think people no me as gambler aside forum because I don't let myself down in the public, even when my friends were talking about their gambling life style I always keep quiet because most times they normally bring such conversation to see your reaction and immediately you follow them up they would want to hear everything about your losses. So I always do my gambling here because obviously we all are doing the same thing.

To me isn't an insults, we all know that their different types of humans or this earth. There're people who took things lightly and some don't,  if someone called me a gambler i won't see it as an insults because it's something that doing, and the only way we can becalled by that name is when you let people know that you're a gamler no one will see you on the street start calling you a gambler but people who took things seriously will see as an insults to me isn't an insults.

Smarter way to move forward would be making sure that you are handling this as best as you can so that you do not have to worry about it. I think anyone's reaction to being called a gambler will be contextual. Content matters a lot. If it's during discussion where valid opinions were made and someone said to me, "relax, you gambler" or "go and sit down, you gambler" when I was about voicing my opinion. I would feel insulted. Again, if I were known around as someone who losses money a great deal and someone called me a gambler; I would feel the same way too –insulted. If it were the other way that I make money from gambling, I wouldn't care if anyone called me a gambler. Success stops insults.

Here in my country where gambling is considered as crime because it is illegal, being called as gambler can be considered as an insult most of the time. No one here who is being called gamblers as a compliment because usually compliment is for something positive while gambling is known to be negative thing. However, we cant control what others are going to say about us because it is their right.

Sometimes there are gamblers that are really emotional, that's why they don't want to be called like that and for them it's a insult. Specially if you are trying to hide your gambling activity from others and suddenly some blurted out that you are a gambler, so that could really hurt that person.

But then again, if we involved our selves in gambling, I think we should know that there will be times that we are going to be exposed and called by it regardless on how we cover our tracks and so with that, we should not be like onion skill and feel hurt. We just have to accept that fact.

Much better to keep the silence and enjoy what you are doing, just like what you said those people who loves to bring the topic are just waiting for your reply and once they noticed that you know something they will start trying to bring more about your participation and will try to chase more stories about your experienced, it brings the begenning of your usual conversation about the outcome and chances that you might be tag as a gambler along the way.

That is not really something to be proud of. But if they call me like that, I am not feels anything and just smile. Nothing to be proud seeing what they say because so I don't have to react too much. I don't feels insulted because they can say anything they want.

But some people may feels proud to hear others calls them gamblers. They will shows that they are professional gamblers although that is far from reality.

It depends on the area where you live and the general perspective of the community in assessing gambling. In my place, if it is called like that, it can be considered “Disgrace”, because it is prohibited by law, custom and religious belief. So it is better not to reveal to anyone that you are a gambler, just yourself who knows in order to avoid bad views where in general gamblers are considered mental destroyers.

It all depends on the context in which I’m called a gambler. What matters is not who says it, but the meaning behind the words, and my reaction can vary accordingly. Personally, it doesn’t affect me at all if someone says this about me, I usually take it calmly. I have my own personal view on gambling, and that’s what I base my attitude on.

If we do tend to look or know the overall impression of most community then we would be that really seeing that gamblers are considered or we do look into those people that are addicted or someone who spend up tons of money and even thinking that they are that irresponsible on which it is that a very wrong mentality. As a person or a gambler then it would be better that you shouldnt be minding about other peoples words or comments about you specially if its your friend or love ones or someone you do know on which it would be that so normal that these impressions is being molded up due to those known gamblers had messed up their lives because of gambling and everyone ending up on generalizing that gamblers are like this on which it is that very wrong.

I wouldnt be seeing this way but rather it would be that an insult on which its true that there are other people who are that very sensitive when it comes into the words that they are hearing but actually it would be that depending on how you do treat gambling. If you are that someone whom that spending up that much and having no risks management then you would be getting insulted if someone teases you saying something negative.

I think if I don't get frustrated with gambling, and can control myself, no one will consider me a gambler. When you are sure of your values ​​and the basis of your work, the labels or comments of outsiders don't matter much. In the country where I live, "gambler" is a common word, not a swear word or a pejorative. It carries no negative connotations. However, if someone calls another a problem gambler, that's a downright insult. Gambling, like betting, is just a hobby, a pleasant pastime for those who enjoy cards or slots. I'm a gambler myself, and many of my friends also enjoy slots and poker, and we don't see anything wrong with our habits. The main thing is to maintain complete self-control and be able to recognize changes in your daily and financial behavior. Then everything will be fine, 100%.

It's their opinion and you can't change their perspective as long as you are enjoying and you are handling things without bothering them or without bothering anyone, those opinions and each statement regarding to your participation to gambling will depend to your own perspectives and why bother it's not their money that you are using and it's their time that you are wasting it's all yours and the enjoyment and entertainment is what you are attaining, and if luck permits it's your money to collect if you manage to win decently.

Depending on the environment and where you live, the words of gamblers in some places are pleasant and proud greetings, but in other places they are mockery and insults, The environment where you live can influence these words towards negative and positive elements.

The reason a name is giving to everyone is to be called and address by that name, so actually if someone leaves the name and began to call me a gambler whenever he sees me of course I will not be happy about it because that is not a name of a person and even if I'm gambling doesn't mean my name should be changed to gambler, the ugly part is that before someone starts calling you by that is actually obvious they intend to humilate the gambler publicly so that people will learned about what the person do. What I will just do is to give him two options, either call me by my name or you shouldn't call me at all because I wouldn't like any other name apart from what I'm known for.

I don't understand why it would be a swear word or an insult. In the end that's what one does. The important thing is not to be a failed player, one of those who claims to want to make money from gambling and in reality loses the money. That is a derogatory element.
