Just like the title say, why do we gamble? This is a crucial question that if it's been asked everyone will likely say they gamble to have fun and to be well entertained maybe at their free or bored time.

But if that is the case why do we usually complain most times when we lose or why the persistent chasing of lost or try to get back our lost each time we lose in our gaming streak , perhaps is it that some of us aren't sincere to our self when we usually say we only gamble for the fun? Or is it more in mind that we aren't saying out?

If you ask a gambler who has just started playing, you will get the answer that he is betting to test his luck. As early as he wins, he will keep gambling to test his luck. This is a psychological aspect for new gamblers. Once he wins, he will gamble again to test his luck. If you ask him why he is playing again, he may answer that he is playing to test his luck again.

If that gambler loses several times and gambles more, you may answer that he is playing to recover his money. As you mentioned in the title, every gambler has a different reason for continuing to gamble. You can call this reason psychological and not to blame yourself.

I think sometimes it’s also because of environment. If almost every day you see gambling ads, your parents gamble, you promote gambling, or your job is related to gambling like being casino dealer, I think there is big chance you will also be influenced to gamble.
Everything I mentioned is related to me, so look at me now, I became gambler. I even took loans because of gambling. At first it felt like just for fun, but later on it wasn’t anymore. It slowly became addiction.

The thing is that with the entry of money, the emotions are bound to come. I think you have put it the right way and people truly should stop living in the distorted reality that to much dopamine from their brain is showing them as the true reality. The psychological reason is the one that pushes the average player to play continuously, if you don't have a goal or a goal to achieve, even if you get a huge win, you will continue playing.
For example, I set myself a goal to reach, just to make it clear I say some numbers that are not real:
The minimum amount I would need to reach to retire from gaming is $200,000, if I can reach or even exceed that amount I will retire from gaming forever.

If you’re being drawn to gambling solely for money and profit then don’t assume it’s like that for everyone, that’s your own opinion about gambling but that doesn’t in anyway imply of mean that everyone else would walk that path too. I’ll say it now as I’ve always said it, there are people who gamble for pleasure, maybe not all the time, but sometimes, they play because they just wanna while away time.

I use to gamble to escape reality at times, of course with no major amount of money but that was my key reason back then when i was very actively gambling. I have soon reduced the level to which i gamble and to be honest things have been going great for me. Now i didnt spend hours gambling, dont get me wrong but that was the reason i gambled when i first started some years ago.

To be honest, I do understand the concept of your post, like alot of person confuse the reason why they gambled and overtime it just becomes what they do everyday as the reason why they started or why they still gamble becomes a blur. I believe that the key motivation of most individuals gambling is the desire to win money even though they initially claim to be doing it as a form of fun or entertainment. The concept of a big win can be easily reinforced in the head having the illusion of possibility by the occasional small wins. With time, the gambling excitement and the dopamine can distort the judgment of a person and he/she gets a belief that the next win will compensate all the losses that had previously occurred. It is not until many gamblers understand that this line of thought is illusory as the more time one plays the more he or she is bound to lose in general. Ha? Isn’t it the other way around? Sorry, but I disagree because it’s the opposite for me. When we’re new, we see gambling as entertainment, just something to have fun with. If we lose, it’s fine. If we win, even better. But as time passes and we spend more time gambling, our mindset changes. We start gambling to make a profit, not just to have fun anymore. It only becomes fun when we win.

Do you mean that having the right mindset in gambling is everything that someone needs to be a better gambler? How someone sees gambling is knowledge based, I think it's different from the mindset aspects which is think is related to how someone wants the outcome of their bets to look. Deep question. Personally while growing up as a teen, a couple of things I couldn’t afford so I delved into gambling with very low stakes. I had a goal and in less than 3years I passed that threshold. But the feeling never goes away, you hit 10k, now you’re chasing 50k, it’s an unending cycle so I picked discipline over it. A lot of us start with genuine reasons but end up being caught up with greed and quick dopamine. From time to time, it’s safe to reassess yourself and know if you’re still in reality to the reason why you started in the first place. It’s okay to disagree, we have different experiences.

Approaching gambling with the wrong mindset may not necessarily lead to addiction, but it can lead to the gambling having several misconceptions about gambling which can potentially result in making several gambling mistakes, and like we know every mistake in gambling is usually a costly one, because gambling is about finance and the more mistakes you make, the more money you lose and worst part of it is that you’ll keep making the same mistake over and over again thinking you’re actually doing the right thing. But this isn’t usually the same thing as addiction, maybe a path to addiction but not the main addiction itself.
