I think generally, what makes people lose more in gambling is how we measure our greed. As a gambler, we all have this greed measurements, the way you will measure the greed of one gambler will be different from another one. If you have less greed in gambling, you will be able to do the things you want to do with ease and without any problem even when you lose money but the fact that some gamblers get carried away with greed, they will be stuck in gambling loop forever.
