Now replace pen with any other product and it’s still pretty much the same. How will you market a pen?
To me selling does not mean convincing someone by force but rather talking in a way that makes them understand how useful the thing will be in their life. When people feel their own need, they no longer need to be convinced separately. Then the product is not just a product, it becomes a solution to their daily life, I believe that if something really adds value to someone's work then there is no need to put extra pressure on it to sell it, people come towards it on their own.

Employers want to be impressed by asking you one thing: sell me this pen.

How do we sell a pen?

1. Purpose.
What’s the purpose of the pen? Will it be useful for you? When or where can you use it? Do you really need it? Can you pass down this pen for your kids to use?

2. Prestige or Status
Who are the users of this pen? Are they esteemed people? Highly regarded people? Will you also be considered as one of them if you buy this pen?

3. Premium Quality
Does the price reflect the actual quality of the product? It serves the basic purpose but what are the additives? How does it differ from others?

I have a good way of selling it, and it's not much different from what the person in the video is doing.
For me, when I have a product, I need to understand everything about it—from its color, shape, and benefits—and when I set the price, I don't really care whether people will buy it or not.

Effective marketing sometimes may not really depend on all the convincing and how you get the customer to make a choice by choosing your product over the others but how efficient and effective is the product, does using the product helps in the selling? The quality of the product is it such that will make the customer see credibility in all of your adverts or would want to think you just tricked then into buying something terrible, the best sales and marketing is the one done by the product, where the product is used as a reference point by the customer as a reason to come back to patronise the product again. Not everyone can market a product effectively but every quality product can be marketed effectively either by the marketer or the product itself after a first trial.
Your point about marketing is very realistic and its true that in marketing not only advertising and attractive words requires for trapping individuals because the real success is behinds the products quality and a good quality product as it is sponser of itself. If we see example of Apple Company why people trusted them because there products perform well and keep this in mind through advertising customers comes for the first time. So if products quality is low then customers may never trusted again in it. So the learning point is that for a strong business smart marketing and quality of products both combinely gives a long term success to owners.

One major thing with marketing should be ringing value,value,value!Marketable items should be capable of adding value to the consumer.The most important criteria with marketing is offering a product/service that solves a problem or improves life in one way or the other.Secondly,positioning should not be overlooked because your product and the value you offer should be visible and communicated to the right needers/audience.

You have a point here, i mean when people look at marketers they just be like you should be able to sell anything i give, but then I would argue just like you that the value of the product to the end user is very important. It would just make it a lot better for the marketing team if the product solves an actual problem and that is a major discussion we need to have more often. Marketing can amplify value but it cannot manufacture it where it doesn’t exist and also the easier it is to communicate real impact of the product, the stronger and more sustainable the results will be.

Correct, marketing do play a major role in success of any product or business but that doesn't mean that with marketing you can sell everything. The product or the business needs to be strong and good and only then the marketing can further help improve the project.

Think of marketing as a tool to boost the sales if a product but if the product isn't worthy or doesn't solve any real human problems, who will buy that product? Yeah with marketing you can sell a few more pieces but when the customer comes to know that the product is useless, he will never return. Also he will not recommend it to anyone and will stop people to buy that product.

This develops the feedback of the product and once the feedback is bad, even the good marketing will fail.

Not everyone can do it but everyone should. Even when applying for a job, or starting a business we all are selling something whether it’s our services or our products we have to sell them and the way to do that is to market it effectively.
I remember applying for a job and I think it's fair to say that I marketed my skills in my field of expertise. At that time I promoted my skills to make the employer believe that I had good qualities and could help the company get better or grow. I think that's the same as the art of marketing too. On the other hand I think not everyone can do this but they probably have their own way.

Totally agreed. It's a common misconception that you only need good marketing to sell a product, but the actual reality is that the quality of your product is the actual reason for the product to have boosted sales, because marketing is only for the initial stage, when you market something, you basically spread the word about the product you are selling, but whether you will get recurring customers or not will totally depend on the quality and usefulness of the product you are selling, because as you mentioned, a customer will only return if they find the product being very useful, and they will also recommend it to others.

Most companies and their products sell not because of their marketing but it's because of the recommendations of their existing customers. If I buy something and realize that it's very good, and I have a friend who also needs something similar, I will definitely recommend him the brand I'm using as soon as we talk about that topic, and then he will do the same, and that chain continues and that's how products get boosted sales.

So the quality and usefulness of a product is the main thing, not the marketing. Smiley

They ask that question because in the art of marketing the product is not as important as the person selling it, you might not need a pen but someone who has the skill can make you actually buy that pen and that is what they are trying to get when they ask you to sell them the pen, they want to see how well you understand value creation, persuasion, and positioning it is very less about the pen itself and more about how you identify a need and communicate benefits and then close the conversation. Ultimately, they’re testing your ability to influence decisions and turn an ordinary object into something desirable.

He has talked about the whole "pen" thing before, the Jordan Belfort guy, and the point isn't to sell a pen, it's not even selling anything perse, it's selling a future that requires a pen.

It means, in the movie for example, the seller guy says "write down your number for me" and he says I do not have a pen, and boom supply and demand. Same goes for anything, you do not sell the product itself, you sell the idea of having that product and how that would be good for you in the future, when you need it.

Good communication via the different medium that is available in our world today helps a lot in marketing. In fact, communication is the key to good marketing because through communication, you will be able to connect with your customers' emotions and be able to build trust and value, thereby making them see the need of whatever you're selling, This way, you will make them trust that what you're saying about the product is true.

Very well said, especially about how actual marketing should be done. Do we ever wonder how someone becomes very good at marketing? They basically grasp the concept behind the product they are selling, and they identify the actual needs of the customers, and then they pitch the product to the potential customers, which makes the success rate very high because you should ask yourself, what do you want as a customer when you are looking for something? You would want a product that will solve your problem without any further search, and if someone pitches you the exact product and does it very well, why would you go somewhere else looking for it?

So the key for marketing is to actually do it from your heart, don't just think that you have a product and you need to sell it, because if you do it that way, you will barely be able to convince your customers, but if you actually love what you do, you will understand everything properly, have a clear understanding of the problems and the solution, and then you will communicate it through words to the customers or clients, and that's how you become a marketing expert.

Now replace pen with any other product and it’s still pretty much the same. How will you market a pen?
To me selling does not mean convincing someone by force but rather talking in a way that makes them understand how useful the thing will be in their life. When people feel their own need, they no longer need to be convinced separately. Then the product is not just a product, it becomes a solution to their daily life, I believe that if something really adds value to someone's work then there is no need to put extra pressure on it to sell it, people come towards it on their own.

Advertising your products doesn't signifies force, everyone is free to patronise their business, than it will be left for the consumers to decide whether to purchase it or not. Products are made for special needs, and those in need of it will purchase them. Our lives depend on the things that are being produce, we just have to give our focus on the ones we found productive. As long as the product is quality one, it will speak for himself. Because the moment people purchase it and know that it worth purchasing, then they will definitely come back for it again and again. Nowadays, people do not consider the quantities, but the quality of the products and how useful it is to them.

You have to understand that people will think you want to take advantage of them buy trying to sell pen to them, a salesperson understand that you have to sell a value the buyer believes that they are winning by purchasing it.
You can't sell a pen to a blind person so regardless of your ability to sell a product the target audience has to align with your product.
The art of marketing is deep and a salesperson understand that they need to constantly match their possible buyer.

Marketing is a best tool if you are expert in that and you have to work in  field to get experty in that . Many people are doing job as a marketing person because company need that kind of people who will sell their product. If product has high quality but person is not qualified then there will be chances of not selling this product and graph will go down. Many people are interested to take job as marketing expert but they have no education and no skill and they are  not part of company. If you are running any shop you have to speak kindly if you want to sell the product and if you will not sell at good price then it is your fault because there are people who are selling at best price due to art of speaking.

Not everyone can do it but everyone should. Even when applying for a job, or starting a business we all are selling something whether it’s our services or our products we have to sell them and the way to do that is to market it effectively.
I remember applying for a job and I think it's fair to say that I marketed my skills in my field of expertise. At that time I promoted my skills to make the employer believe that I had good qualities and could help the company get better or grow. I think that's the same as the art of marketing too. On the other hand I think not everyone can do this but they probably have their own way.

It all comes down to being able to land a deal. Marketing is one skill I’ve being trying to develop on and it’s not being paced yet, the progress is slow but even slow progress is progress still. Good marketing with a good reputation to back it sells brands even more faster than the quality of what you are offering. The quality would speak for itself when the time is due but, your marketing strategy is what would attract people to your brand.
