So I observe most of my friends doing other activities while gambling, some of them smoking and some of them drink coffee or soda. Is it common for gamblers to do other activities while gambling? Does it help them to focus or not? I would like to hear other opinions too.

Personally, I don’t do other activities when I gambling, I just focus on gambling because I don’t want to mess up my decisions. Also, if I follow them and start smoking for example, wouldn’t it be better to use the money for gambling instead of buying other things?

I think what you're noticing is actually very common. I've also seen a lot of people doing these habits while gambling, only in gambling places where smoking is not prohibited (which is not very common these days), for online gambling, no problem. These aren't just habits, but a routine. Some people just can't be comfortable without a cigarette, on the other hand.
Will it help them focus? Maybe yes, because that's where they are comfortable, and it may help them keep their composure even with losses. Though sometimes, adding more stimulation (like nicotine or caffeine) can make people more impulsive instead of more focused.

As for the money part, you're thinking logically. If someone is gambling mainly to try and grow their money, then spending extra on cigarettes or drinks during the session does add up over time. But at the same time, it shouldn't be about redirecting that money back into gambling either. Ideally, both the gambling money and the "extras" should come from a budget someone is already comfortable losing.

That’s their style, you have yours. Just do whatever works for you. Maybe the things they do are just to help them relax, especially if they’re betting big amounts. As you know the pressure in gambling can be real sometimes.

For me it’s different. I usually just drink coffee and keep things simple. I don’t really focus too much on the gambling itself. If I’m playing slots, I just let it spin while I’m doing other stuff. Same thing with sports betting, once the bet is placed I just leave it and do something else instead of stressing over every play.

I don't see smoking and drinking as an activity because it goes well with gambling. I thought you wanted to say activities like gyming, cooking, office work and other activities that needs 100% concentration. If you go to a land based casino, you will see many gamblers drinking and smoking playing on a table.

As long as you're not drinking alcohol and lose control of your senses, I don't see drinking soda or soft drinks while gambling as a distraction. Some gamblers will tell you that when they're smoking and gambling, it gives them the insight of the game compared to when they're not smoking. Everyone with what works for them.

Caffeine does seem to help some people focus more than they would on a regular, carbonated water too which is something they can get from different soda too, that's the whole marketing of these drinks after all, the are carbonated. If doing one of these things helps a person focus then they are welcome to keep doing it, the same way everyone of us is welcome to do whatever will work for us as well, I don't smoke so I can exactly comment on that but a bit of caffeine does help keep me going every now and then.

Well, I think it helps them kill boredom. And for some, it relaxes them and takes that adrenaline rush away from them; especially those who are hypertensive.

Except you're a copycat kind of person, I don't see why you should allow other people's way of life influence you. I hope you got into gambling intentionally and not that you're imitating someone else's lifestyle? To tell you the truth, while growing up I used to associate gamblers to smokers and other vices until I began to see gamblers who weren't indulging in those stuff. I've see criminals who look innocent, they don't smoke, drink or womanize. Yet, they're deadly.

Those I watch in movies and even here in street gambling, often while playing, hold a cigarette; this is what I often see among gamblers, and probably even in online casinos when someone gambles, they do the same thing, especially if they are just at home with alcohol while smoking.

And this is not prohibited in casinos, in my opinion, because I wish we had seen before that there would be no such habits, though it is not my habit even if I say that I play gambling

In my case, no. I prefer to focus on what I'm doing so I don't lose my excitement. But focusing doesn't matter if the game is purely based on chance. There are times that I put the game on auto play so that I can do something that I want to do and the game continues to play itself automatically, but most time I prefer not to be distracted and just play the games without auto play but be betting manually, only few times that I set it on auto play. There are some people that like to do other things but continue to gamble also. There is nothing wrong about it but I do not do it frequently. If I put it on manual play, most time I stopped the game for a while if I have to do something else.

There are people who are superstitious when it comes to gambling. They think that doing certain things might increase their chances, like some kind of routine or lucky habit. Maybe there’s no real science behind it, but when you feel relaxed people tend to believe luck comes easier.

Since a lot of us here are playing games of luck anyway, it’s not surprising that people stick to whatever they think makes them lucky. Even if deep down we know it probably doesn’t change the outcome.

Moderate smoking or drinking shouldn't have much effect on your attention while gambling. I don't encourage any of these activities because of the health consequences, but I have heard from people that it can help reduce anxiety or tension. I have also watched in movies where some gamblers smoke while gambling and I think they are still focused. It will become a problem when these activities are abused. A drunk gambler would make costly mistakes.

I don't see these two activities as very serious to distract a gambler. There are many activities that a gambler shouldn't consider multitasking on while gambling. You can see many of them in this thread Have you ever gambled at 'out of place' place?

Alot comes with gambling most especially the land-based gambling houses, that is why you can easily find them in the hotels, because casino houses are for adults content. Most times some illegal dealing can take place where such activities are illegal, but yes smoking and drinking is a most common thing you see gambler's do in the casino. Since it for fun and entertainment, the management sees that as a business.

What gambler's may fail to understand is that, drinking and smoking could impair your emotions to make you lose more in gambling, there is no two ways about that, so what best for you to do is to observe yourself and make sure you don't copy others since everything have both negative and positive sides for a gambler.

Besides, land casino's are not so popular these days, so we can do away with all those distractions and side activities that go on in the casino houses, every one is adopting online casinos for flexibility and privacy.

Coffee and smoke back when I was visiting poker rooms. That's my go-to habit whenever I visit the place. Well, that is while haing conversation with other players. But when I sit, and the game starts, as much as possible, coffee only.
Ever since I stopped smoking, it's just coffee for me, but I don't visit poker rooms anymore. It's just online gambling games while having some coffee, just like now. I think it's the relaxing smell that is why I want it in front of me every day.

We'll, for some people gambling is entertainment and some people gamble for fun and to relax and sometimes having a drink/smoke while playing is a good combination. I think people who are really focus and serious about gambling or playing are the ones who are most likely to get addicted (not all) since they took it personally and give too much focus to it but I do get what you say, sometimes if you're out of focus you'd more likely to make wrong decision or prone to mistakes but honestly, it's player's reference. As long as you're having fun, that's all what matters the most.

It is very common, I do it myself since I'm a smoker. For me, smoking while gambling makes me relax just like when I do other activities. Don't gamble when you are out of focus, because there's lots of destructive situation might going to happen. Much better to focus on more important things for a while, since its not good to deal with gambling if you are distracted with something else.

I don't see anything wrong on smoking, because there are people doing that while playing for thinking that they can focus more on what they are doing. But you should know your priorities since if the case that your gambling funds affect your vices meaning you are not financially fine. Better stop both and use your money on essential needs.

I guess it’s pretty common then. Although I’m a smoking addict but I can’t follow what my friends did when gambling. Maybe it’s because I once saw one of my friends get drunk from drinking alcohol and pick the wrong team to bet on. Back then I laughed so hard.

Well, yeah activities like office work and others included too, sometimes the urge to gamble appears but until now, I’ve been able to control it. I’m afraid that multitasking would disturb my focus, whether on my work or on my gambling decisions.
