You are basically right, but I think it's still all boils down to mindset, I can say that gambling is safe to earn money from, but just stick to the rules of responsible gambling, every one must not gamble for exactly same reason because just as our faces are different, so also is out heart desires..

You're actually not getting money from gambling but life experiences. And we can't change the fact that gambling is not made in favor of the players but of the casino owner. Understanding this situation is enough for us to think that we can't and it is impossible to make this stuff our side hustle. Instead, we should make this for entertainment.

You know what, I do not have any strong opinions for/against gambling (whether +ve or -ve ). Forget about poker and sports, people categorize almost anything as gambling which has some element of risk. For me it is all about cashing out on opportunities, if you can find a fish on a poker table, join it. If you find advantageous sports odds try to take advantage of it I will even go further and say that if you are finding a deposit bonus which can be +ve, play through it. Ofc, you have to keep an eye on your bank roll and addiction.
But having said that, this all requires a lot of focus, discipline and energy which will evade the fun of emersing yourself in a splashy slot. Also the edge you will create will be not that big and it will always be an active income anyway. You will be better off learning a new skill in a long run, which will build your trek record and experience.

You are right, there is no house edge but there is rake, which is far more corrosive to your profits than standard house edge. You can beat a weak player in short term but even with a 10 bb/100 bb win rate (which only professional players can achieve), you will not make any money without leader boards and rake back, in the long term.     
If you account for time and efforts spent (few minutes on slots vs hours and hours of focused poker), rake will be even more lethal.

Gambling itself is a game of luck so i don't understand how someone can be good enough at gambling without luck being attached to it. Generally, gambling is about luck; proceeds are not guaranteed in gambling so it will be ignorant of someone to make it a side hustle. A side hustle is a minor job that alternates one's major source of income so how will a sane person take gambling as a way to earn an income.
