This is the first time I have read something like this in our country in over 4 decades of lotto operation

A guy tried to collect the 172 million reward by presenting a fake ticket. I don't know if he is just ignorant of the verification process or a pure scammer trying to scam a government-owned lottery. It's too bad the prize has been collected by the rightful owner.

It is not possible that he presents them a fake ticket and they don't verify it before awarding the money to him, except if the scammer is an hacker who already hacked into their system, because we can't trust people nowadays on what they are up to and only on this occasion can they be scammed, but aside that, do we have to check the procedures on their system and how it happens for them to verify before any reward is being given, moreover, this is also a huge amount in considerations so they have to follow the due procedures.

Actually its really hard to believe on why they've been bypassed out on something which is that likely a possibility but its true that this isnt common and this is also my first time on hearing out about faking a ticket. It would be that impossible that they wouldnt be able to make up some checks. There are even those rules on claiming the prize is that you shouldnt be folding your ticket for it not to be void.  Wondering if on how that person been able to get those amount. Good thing that they were able to trace and arrest that person on which considering the amount is really a huge one and you can easily hide yourself and not being caught and still have tons of money. Tickets does have that bar codes and its impossible that they wont be able to see for it to be a fake one. For sure there are other people who do already have the idea but considering that it already happens then verification would be more tough.

I don't think it has ever happened in my country, honestly. Perhaps, because people can tell there are security features on lottery tickets, as soon as they touch them, so nobody is stupid enough to try to risk their freedom for the sake of money, specially because lottery agents and the government would quickly realize there was something off in a matter of days.

That guy was quite stupid and he deserves to be thrown in jail for a couple of years for attempting to pull off and multimillion fraud against the government of his country.

Sometimes even with a legitimate ticket they will look for reasons to not to pay you, and they use the fine print to get away with it, so collecting with a fake ticket must be the dumbest idea to make money. And the person who was arrested is not the first one who did that and definitely not going to be the last one either.

Not sure that something like that would even be possible with todays verification systems.  Modern lotteries use several layers of security to make sure the right person gets paid.  Every ticket has a specific serial number and barcode so when the winning combination of numbers is drawn, the system already knows exactly where and when that winning ticket was purchased.  And when someone tries to claim a prize, the system checks those codes against the "winning" entries in the database.  That is practically impossible to falsify, at least not unless someone inside the system is involved.

There is definitely a verification process for anything of such nature as long as it involves the government. I can say that he got himself shot on his foot because no government agency would release such an amount of money, knowing fully well that scammers or fraudsters would definitely want to shoot their shots in attempting for the money. The ticket has codes which would be verified by the team members if it really is coming from their database, as released by them and other processes that must be properly scrutinized before they could release the money to the winner. If these measures and verification processes are not undergone, the money would not be released.

I find it a little hard to believe that anyone could think this would work. In my mind, the more likely scenario is that someone managed to sell him the ticket or talk him into trying to claim the fake ticket for a share of the rewards. I would estimate everyone involved probably has an IQ under 80.

Well most times I don't consider these cases seriously because if for example the roles were reversed and the government tried to steal the win from him, there would still be a way people would like to justify it as fine. Well lotteries don't really help the poor winners if you ask me.

It's basically like a mental cycle to prove that they are poor for a reason and in the end they lavish everything and go back to scratch from nothing and worse they are left with psychological problems.

The scammers could have succeeded if that winning had not already been claimed by the original winner. Assuming the scammer came earlier and presented that fake ticket, upon checking on the database and noticing it was not claimed, they could have paid without further investigation.

According to the article, it was when the official noticed the winning had been paid that they looked deep to see how the ticket had already been tampered with. Who knows if the person had not tried this out before? Even if it did not work before, he could be that bold.

There are those who try to fake betting tickets but I doubt they'll succeed and they're just making a silly living doing it, but people like that do exist.
 
Even if it does work we will never know there may be someone who manages to fake it without being identified, this is usually with a relatively small amount of winnings, if it is large they will not dare because it must be exposed.

There is no way the scammer could have successfully claimed that winning with a fake ticket, if the original owner never came first to claim it. See @Nwada001 the lottery system has multiple checks that make it extremely hard to fake a winning ticket.

Every tick has a unique barcode or serial number, so when you present a ticket the tailer or the lottery officer scans it, to know if that ticket was actually issued, whether the winning has been claimed or not and if the ticket has the winning numbers that were announced. And when the ticket you presented doesn't pass the checks, then the tailer or the lottery officer will quickly know that it is a fake ticket.

Am sure things are way better than before as per modern security features meant to detect such kinds of fraudulent scams and that's why in a country like the Philippines verification is stricter than before while the PCSO is under major huge scrutiny over various allegations.

The guy is quite heady and stubborn because why would he even think to be successful in the first place? The system is designed to know when winnings have been claimed and that's just it.

I can't remember any stories of this happening except for those who threw away their tickets thinking they lost, only to come to the realization of their wins but couldn't provide the ticket and also some fraud cases where casino operators claim a ticket lost and kept it, only to cash out on the winnings of the original owners ticket that was thought as a loss. That's why so many security features exist to checkmate all these loop holes in the first place.

There’s no way to fake lottery tickets because it contains unique code that only legit ticket contains on the barcode.

The only way to possibly fake it is when there’s someone inside colluding with this person by providing the code on their database to claim the win.

I’m casually betting on lottery and the ticket is very hard to fake due to uniqueness of each ticket.

Honestly, I still dont understand the possibility of collecting a whopping sum of 172 million reward using a fake ticket. The chances are 100 to 0, unless a technical issue occurs or the system is hacked. The story isn't complete, more investigation should be done, that is, if someone working in the lotto company has a hand in it.
