China wouldn't introduce this kind of policy if it had nothing to gain from it. The first thought that came to my mind was that China might be sourcing raw materials, especially since Africa is known for exporting mostly agricultural products, which largely serve as raw materials. Products like cocoa, palm kernel, oil, and minerals etc fall into this category.

The zero-tariff policy could simply be an incentive to encourage Africa to send more of its products to China. With this incentive, China will have steady access to resources across over 50 African countries, and of course, it will help build long-term, favourable trade relationships between China and the countries involved. It is a win-win for all the parties involved.

China is setting the stage to be the number one world power.

Car manufacturing cheaper and more advanced than America.
Export ready economy.

Self sufficiency in food and energy. Biggest metallurgy mills in the world. Own civilian jets and armaments production.
Supply chains covering internal needs independent of west interference.

The few things china is missing in comparison to the west like chips, already china is racing against time and will have the number one there soon too. The EU and US are deathly afraid of how China surpassed them on car tech and imposed ridiculous tariffs. I. Europe it's still cheaper to buy a Chinese ev with 100% tariffs than a European one.

Now with Chinese and African collaboration and resources China can become unstoppable.

African countries dom't have industrial products to export, especially to China considering it to be the manufactor of the world nowadays. China eliminate tariffs for agriculture products such as fruits and vegetables, and to minerals or some rere metals. China need those product not to stop coming for any reason, so to curb concurrence, they removed tariffs. And because it exports to Africa more than it imports, the African countries will never find a better market in Europe or America. China like any other major power, it make decisions that serve its interests at first place, but no problem in sharing the benefits with some partners who upgraded to be allies in some way or another.

Correct. Whenever China makes a big move to strengthen their position in global politics, economics and other whatnots, people make statements like: "China must have something to gain or something up their sleeves", of course they do, just like any other country. There is no country that implements policies that would be counterproductive to themselves, so it is nothing new. I guess the West have just naturally turned many poeple against China, but that still hasn't stopped their march towards global dominance.

Well said. Right now, China has just positioned itself as Africa's first choice market they will think of to sell their products to. China needs Africa as much as Africa also needs China. Hopefully, by the time other countries notice that China is dominating the African Market, they will relax some of their tariff policies to make international trades between Africa and them more convenient and with ease of access. They are not doing Africa any favour; it's a thing of mutual benefit.

But the big question that came to my mind when I first saw this News was, why is China doing this. This is a strategic and well calculated move by China to strengthen trade ties with Africa and continue to have more footing and influence in the African market, there by position itself as a major partner of the Global South which will translate to expanding Chinese global dominance agenda.

But one shocking revelation that I found out is that, even with these zero tariffs Africa still exports less to China than it imports from China annually, so China is not stupid but this is strategic in nature, and has a goal that they intend to achieve. This is a good and welcome development but it will have little impact on the African continent this is because until African countries improve in the areas of production, infrastructure, and industrial development which will see African countries move closer to the part of industrialization exporting cars, smart phones, engine and even technology to China and to the rest of the world. Until that is done these types of moves will not translate to real success as it will be seen by country such as America as another plot from China to lay more hold on Africa which is the battle ground for the next world order. Forgive me if my views differs from the aim of this deal but am only a concerned Africa speaking.
You're right, it is the first thing that I have thought of. China is doing this because they're the ones developing those countries. If you are aware of the "Chinese debt trap" that's what they're doing. AFAIK, the countries in the African region are rich in minerals and those minerals are needed in creation of ev battery and other important products that they're producing. So, we get the idea why they do that. They're good for the countries that they have benefits and they're also benefiting from the loans that they've given to the African countries.

The unfortunate part is that, even with this policy, many African countries will suffer to export, for most of them are consuming nations, which has plague the continent to this day.
Africa is full of leaders and people that are third world and annoying to the point that they are only exporting raw materials that was created naturally. They are unable to export what are manufactured in their countries because they do not have the brain to manufacture it.
Your absolutely wrong coming up with the conclusion that People in Africa are with no production and manufactory brains. That's fallacy in all entirety and shouldn't be allowed to spread. Talk about bad leaderships I would agree with you wholeheartedly because that's actually what African countries lack, visionary leaders that would create a manufacturing economy to thrive beyond what we have, because right now it's all about consumption and less production and even those we can produce the available market prefers foreign over the local products. This has also being one discouragement in local manufacturing and productions.

China has introduced a zero percent tariff policy for imports from about 53 African countries excluding Eswatini due to her ties with Taiwan. This move will see African goods penetrating the Chinese market without any import duty which will translate to making goods coming from the African, market cheaper and more competitive with those of china in the Chinese market. With these policy coming to effect from the first of May agricultural goods such as Cocoa,Coffee, yam,Fruits including Natural resources and raw materials will be free from paying any form of import duty making these products more cheaper accessing the Chinese market.

Contrary to what many people believe, China has shown that they can be good nation builders and business partners. Yes, they are looking out for their own interest, but they still create opportunities for countries they work with. Removing tariffs on african goods means farmers and exporters can sell things like cocoa, coffee and fruits to China more easily and make more money. That is a real benefit if african countries can take advantage of it. At the same time, it is not magic. If african countries are not producing enough or improving infrastructure, they won’t gain much from this opportunity.

While the whole world or rather developed countries are actually trying to fight each other or fight developing countries and also third world nations I think China is seizing this opportunity to grow their economy through partnership. If we see clearly this is a mindset of business oriented people. For me while China is actually looking out for themselves it also gives African countries who have enslaved themselves in the hand of all western countries to actually grow their own economy too through the Chinese partnership.

Since there's a trade war with America, I think Africans growing high farm products in Wheat, Corn and also Soya bean would benefit from this partnership.
Africa and China hold a large part in the world's population, we need ourselves to work together more. I do think it is also high time Africans emulates China, we need to have ourselves industrialised to an extent. We can not export our raw materials forever,  we also need to production for our own sovereignty.

Perhaps China is trying to control the African market through a policy of tax exemption, unlike what Trump did by raising tariffs on most countries of the world. I see it as a wise and smart move by China, unlike the United States.

Instead of raising tariffs and making everyone angry at you to get some extra money, you can bring in much greater economic benefits and obtain huge economic resources in this way. With this step, China not only attracted the African market but also presented itself as the good brother in contrast to the bad and greedy United States.
That is definitely the plan I see that the Chinese authorities are trying to do, China is only trying to control the African market by proxy. This policy is well intended to change and confus the mind of the African leaders and policy makers. This will give make African countries make more susceptible to manipulation from China which will not be a good thing on the long run.

While this regulation may seem advantageous to African countries, it actually benefits China more. the majority of African countries are raw material exporters. therefore, when they export to China, entrepreneurs there can obtain raw materials more cheaply, allowing them to export finished goods to Africa, as African countries are consumer nations.

furthermore, with this 0% tariff, China can be viewed as a strategic partner by African countries, which will enhance China's image and influence in the African region, as they have long sought to increase their influence in regions left behind by Western countries. it's all about politics and opportunity. they wouldn't have launched a policy like this if it didn't benefit them more.

When the US is busy bullying the world, China is seeking means to make more business partnerships. The good part about this Chinese policy is that African countries now have the chance of accessing the Chinese market. China has one of the biggest markets in the world, so smart African countries can create products and services that could be in high demand in China. Some African countries now know who their true friends are, so the propaganda against China is failing.

That mutual benefit is not the case in the trading relationship between Africa and the rest of the world and also between China and the west world leaded by Europe and USA. By creating a trading balance, both China and Africa can get rid of the west dominance over the global trade market.

I would also like to mention that China is extensively developing logistics and infrastructure projects across Africa under the Belt and Road Initiative[1], focusing on ports, railways, and pipelines to enhance trade connectivity[2]. This is what can be called a cooperation based on mutual benefit. I would avoid to compare it with classic economies strategies based on extortion and imperialism.

Yes it is. These world powers sometimes take extreme measures to strengthen their position, but the West make theirs look normal and China's to lool evil, lol. People have so much bought into it that someone believes there is something evil about China's implementation of duty-free importation of African goods into China.

That said, it is now up to these African countries. This is an opportunity for expansion and growth, thus they have to do more to take advantage of this and close the trade deficit to China.

This policy will make a very important shift in global trade. China always put itself first. Now China is positioning itself as a key partner by removing tariffs for 53 African countries. Which is a strategic master class in economics diplomacy. As it has remove tariff on agriculture product and raw material so these products are entering in their markets duty free which is making their cost lower for their own industries and strenthing their influence across their continent. This zero tariff policy is making African goods more competitive but the continent is still importing more products from China then it is exporting to them. Which is definitely considered as a” trade imbalance”. Africa is primary supplier of raw material without giving any competition in technology and manufacturing. They must built their own processing units and factories for their long term survival.

I recently watched the Chinese historical film "The Battle of Red Cliff" and was struck by the fact that in ancient times, the Chinese army had a position called a strategist. This wasn't a military officer, but a civilian specialist whose main job was to develop various strategic plans that could be applied on the battlefield. 🙋

I think there are similar people in the Chinese Communist Party today. That's why China's foreign economic policy isn't chaotic, but always pursues clearly defined goals.

China has a population of 1.5 billion. And the Chinese government needs to ensure that they won't starve, even in the event of a fierce geopolitical confrontation with the United States. This is why, in my opinion, China has introduced a zero-tariff policy on imports from most African countries. Agricultural imports from Africa are very important to China. The fact that Chinese farmers are capable of producing these same agricultural products themselves is irrelevant. China thinks strategically. It's better to have a food surplus than to starve.

Furthermore, in my opinion, African countries are very important allies for China (for example, all these countries have voting rights in the UN and other international organizations).💁

You know the drill, this people are not cheerful giver. If they ar not getting something in return they are not given you freebies. There is nothing like free things in their place. It's either you run their back and they run yours or you pay a huge sum of money before they offer their services. They know Africa is rich with mineral resources, probably they are looking for a government they can collaborate and get discount on his raw materoal they ship to China.

We do see US and some West been hard on some African countries but if we fix our economy and make it a working one, I don't think this people will come around looking for cheap labour and cheap resources. We will not even want to have anything to do with thek because we produce and refined everything from here but the machine to refined this product are not even available. Sell raw materials to them only to buy back at expensive price after refined.

Africa is full of leaders and people that are third world and annoying to the point that they are only exporting raw materials that was created naturally. They are unable to export what are manufactured in their countries because they do not have the brain to manufacture it.
I completely agree with your statement that, apart from raw materials which is given by nature to our rich and blessed continent which Africa export to the rest of the world. African can't export any other thing again Maybe China is aware of this and is only playing the game. It's really unfortunate that virtually everything that we need as a continent we have to import making us more vulnerable and manipulative in nature.

Indeed, China is known for being business minded, and they wouldn’t make a deal if it meant losing. China doesn’t usually enter a losing business. I believe they’re aiming to reap benefits or gain advantages later on. They’re thinking long term and are already setting things up with this first move.

We all know what China wants, to compete with the US, the West, and to expand its global influence, in economics and trade. Since they can’t openly engage in conflict, they’re focusing on economic strategies instead. Over time, the Chinese yuan could become more widely used in trade. Countries like Zambia and Kenya have already started using yuan for specific payments like mining royalties.

It’s widely believed that China’s long term goal is to elevate the yuan to challenge the US dollar. Some African countries are already holding yuan as part of their reserves.

China, is an industrialized country and their products are visible in every parts of the world especially in Africa, that is my believe, I don't know about other countries but almost everything that we use in Nigeria, are imported from china. From electrical gadgets, building materials, fashion, spare parts and a lot more, almost everything in our homes and on the roads are made in China. So if China, is giving back to Africa, through removal of tariffs from exporters into their country, I think that is fair enough since they are gaining so much more from Africa.

I wonder the kind of impact that African goods will have in China, I don't think it will be anything to write home about except for raw materials to produce and ship back finished products back into Africa and the rest of the world. China, is too big to be affected by removal of tariff from African products into their country, I applaud them nonetheless for their business initiatives.
