Gambling is a waste of money, a woman said to her husband, but life proved her wrong.

Glenda Blackwell bought a Carolina Millions scratch-off ticket for $10 to prove to her husband that they didn't payoff. The lesson failed — her ticket hit for $1 million.

Glenda Blackwell of North Carolina planned to teach her husband a lesson - playing the lottery is a waste of their money. So instead of buying two Powerball tickets that her husband had requested, she bought a Carolina million scratcher for $10 to show him they didn't pay off. But in a major case of eating one's words, the scratcher hit for a million dollars, making her words, as she put it to WLOS, well worth eating. It's MORNING EDITION.

Gambling is very risky, those that are using it to look for money are losing, but there are times someone that is not looking for money through it might be lucky despite the little chance that seems impossible.

What I also like about this is that the woman used just $10 for it which would be a very little amount of money to her.

Well this we can definitely call "an isolated incident" that changed their lives for the better but I am pretty confident if she did it again a thousand other times most probably the thousand of other times will be losing tickets. I tried so hard with scratch back in the days when we had a national lottery that was up to 250.000 EUR and despite buying a lot of tickets the max I have won is 27 EUR which is why gambling truly is very risky. Some people are lucky enough to change life through it yet 99.99% others are deep down because of gambling.

This is the type of incident that turn some people into gambling addicts, because on they very first try they hit a jackpot trying to prove that gambling doesn't work out but unexpected happened to them, her motivation will become extremely high and now instead encouraging her husband to quite, she will now become his major motivator to keep chasing his luck and even the woman also will start gambling because her very first attempt hit a million dollar jackpot.

She had about a 1 in 5 million chance of hitting as big as she did. I buy a lottery ticket now n then and have never won more then $500, and that has only happened once in 30+ years. The lottery is IMO a waste of money if you play daily. You have better odds doing so many other things, sports, blackjack, baccarat, or almost anything.

I am 99,99% sure, that after winning million with 10 bucks scratch card, while trying to prove that lottery is a waste of time, she immediately replied with "THAT DOES NOT PROVE ANYTHING" Sorry if someone gets offended, but often women will continue standing on her opinion even if they are wrong. Most likely that woman has replied that this is just luck and gambling is still waste of money.

Lottery works in strange ways, winners most times get it at the time they least expected it. The woman in question would be most flourished with her new thoughts of what gambling is exactly about. How things could turn around for good, despite her high expectance and wish for her spouse to lose.

Deym thats really a face palm to her. If it was me on her place I'll be in pale mood for weeks or even months. Sometimes a request like that could be as simple as that but see what happened. They should have a lot of money now and Im assuming her husband is cursing her now like she what you did.

Not sure how to take this honestly but maybe if she did trust her husband at all and got a little faith and not on criticise side they already made a life changing money.

She just enjoyed beginner's luck. This is the type of win that will make people assume that gambling is profitable, which could lead to over gambling. Lotteries have the lowest chance of winning, as many people have played them for many years and won nothing substantial. I have known an elderly man who has been a committed lottery player for close to forty years and never won big. Newbies in gambling shouldn't see this story as motivation because it happens rarely.

Yes, lotteries are waste of money to me also, but if you can afford to lose the money you are using for it and you do not make it an habit of compulsion, it is still good. But some people are really betting money on lotteries, buying tickets almost every time, but buying a ticket once in awhile can be considered not bad. There are some people that will be buying lottery tickets but not winning, that is what gambling is.

Most likely that woman has replied that this is just luck and gambling is still waste of money.

And she will be right, chasing lotteries is still a waste of money, it is not even about being lucky cause the idea that it is based on luck pushes some people who think they are lucky to try, you are just statistically not going to win. There are so many other activities we call a waste of time that has better odds of happening than the person winning millions in lottery.

I think I read a similar topic before but I can’t find it through search. This is about a man that refunding what he purchased and he use the refunded amount to purchase ticket and win but they are arguing before due to the ticket purchase.

This kind of event is very unique and very satisfaction in terms of being lucky. Imagine winning an argument against a woman and at the same time winning literally a huge money.

It is a really unusual and rare story, and the discussion afterward is always really good about how lucky this was. I think it is funny to use lottery ticket as a show of the foolishness of wasting money, especially when it goes wrong this way. I think the key lesson from this is she spent only $10, she didnt blow all her savings, so it is in a fair range budget wise. The fun out of the problem aside, it is certainly not a plan most people want to use to pay their bills, just their turn on the games and hope for the best.

It's amazing that there are such cases in life, because it's very similar to the movie script, but only happened in reality.Well, in general, I want to say that this is a very big exception that came true with a very small chance of it, and I am sure that 1,000 wives proved to their husbands in the same way that gambling, including lotteries, has no financial value for the family. And at the same time, they turned out to be right, because their lottery tickets were lost, thus showing that really all this is just a hope for luck, which rarely favors the players.

It reminds me of the Singapore anti-gambling ad from 2014.
Kids were discussing who would be the winner of the FIFA World Cup 2014.
All of them shared their opinions and the reasons why their team would win, until the last kid said something.

It's a waste if it's not in accordance with its function, I also believe in that, but it's different in the view of people who have gotten extraordinary luck in gambling as in this case, it will definitely be considered a form of effort that is not in vain even though the thought remains.

The only way that would be effective in prevent, or at least slowing down, the psychological harm of fantasies about immediate changes in life behavior, is to have independent control over the movement of funds.

Such may not happen in billions of situations, and I'm sure that countless of people must have said what she said and were proven right. Her case made the round because it was positive. How much more that would have happened untold?

A lot of times the people that win the most are those that are inexperienced, just from their first trial they end up winning a huge amount of money. This proves that winning in gambling has no road map or patterns that can always put anyone in profit in the long run, it is a game of luck and consistent efforts don't really attract wins.

I think it is funny that when the woman buy lottery ticket because she really don't want to won it but accidentally she was very lucky and won the jackpot but indeed in lottery winning the prizes is just like a mistery because we have quite often to see any people who bought lottery ticket daily for years but these people never won it but aside from that we have seen the people buy the ticket very rare because they didn't put high expectation to the lottery but in fact these people can won it even with huge prizes and i think the woman mindset has been change now that with her luck even one chance can change her life and the husband because with those money i am sure they can enjoyed their life without working so hard
