Since most major football leagues are starting a new season, I think it's time also to have clear rule regarding duplicate threads for the same league/competition. As an active poster in the Gambling Discussion board, I've noticed that new threads are being created again for leagues like the EPL, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and others, eventhough threads from previous seasons already exist. Wouldn't it be better if the original thread starter simply updated the thread title to the new season (for example, changing "2025/26" to "2026/27") so the discussion could continue in one place? That would keep all discussions organized instead of splitting them across multiple threads every season. I'm not sure if there's already a rule covering this. If there is, please let me know. And before anyone says, "Just report the duplicate thread and let the moderators handle it," I know it works but I think it would be better to have a clear guideline so users know what to do before creating another thread. e.g. UEFA Europa League Threads https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5589129.0https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5587907.0https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5558133.0

That would keep all discussions organized instead of splitting them across multiple threads every season. And what will happen if the original topic starter is no longer active on the forum? Leave the work for the board moderator to edit it ? I think 1 thread for one season is better off and at the end of each the thread should be locked and discussion concerning that league moved to a new thread. And before anyone says, "Just report the duplicate thread and let the moderators handle it," I know it works but I think it would be better to have a clear guideline so users know what to do before creating another thread.
In this example, given, even if the threads are reported, they might not be handled since they are all made to stand differently, one self moderated, the other not self-moderated.

This is exactly why I created this thread. We don't have a clear guideline on how these threads should be handled. I don't mind having one thread per season if that's the preferred way. My point is that there should be a clear rule so everyone follows the same practice. Right now, some users create new thread every season while others continue posting in the old one. That's why we keep seeing duplicate threads. Hope this clear now.

This is exactly why I created this thread. We don't have a clear guideline on how these threads should be handled. A clear guideline in my opinion should be a renewal of the thread for each new season which can be started by any member but must be neatly done. Just as we have a new bitcoin price speculation thread for the each of the new month in the speculation board and it is really organised that way, same way it should be done for the sports thread every new season. Thank you.

I disagree on this. NBA for example only has 1 thread for general discussion and 1 for betting discussion. The OP is just updating the thread title year and this thread is much better than yearly new thread. This keeps running for many years now. I understand football has so many league which is why separate thread is unavoidable but that gives more reason to make thread creation done in more organized way to avoid redundant thread as much as possible.

This your proposal is reasonable because it'd mitigate user's spamming on the same discussion by creating new ones while there's already an existing one. But of the truth, this your ideal to control or avoid duplicate threads of same discussions in a seasonal football leagues like this, there must be an official thread that's to be pinned to make it be visible for every user's in the gambling section but that's not an official discussion to be pinned like that. So this can only be curbed by reporting to Mod or ask the Op to lock of take it down. If we also follow this your opinion, that means we're going to have each league its own discussion thread which will last for as many yearsz probably as long forum exists because there's always tournaments on these leagues every year.

There’s no problem having a new thread for a new season .. what’s bad is leaving the other thread open for continuous discussion, which will eventually cause it to resurface over and over again .
A better approach should be : mods lock the old thread when there’s any new one which can serve as a replacement..
Duplicates should be locked unless they discuss something different entirely that can’t be merged with the existing.
Two from the one you listed should be locked although one is 25/26.

This is some how it has been, someone will create thread on Meta about the duplicate threads, but I will still see new thread about such discussions like the English Premier League with at least 3 threads again. The old ones are not also locked which added to it. I guess some of the threads were reported, bit not locked. A better approach should be : mods lock the old thread when there’s any new one which can serve as a replacement..
The old thread's topics are edited to the new season. I think this is difficult for moderators to finally make conclusion which is the reason you will see like three English Premier League thread each season.

It's not the first time people complained about it. 4 Same Topic in Gambling Discussion section. My suggestion on how to reduce the spam problem in gambling board, what's yours?Likely more but due to complaints and changes from signature campaign managers, many months ago, they tended to no longer count posts in Gambling mega threads, but it results in changes from spammers. They created pointless threads in Gambling boards, and they complained why pointless threads in that board was either deleted or locked. Why are so many gambling discussion threads getting locked?I remember that there was more similar threads about these issues.

How hard is it for the moderator to decide whether to lock 🔒 the old threads? The old threads are not edited to new seasons, rather people just continue posting and even if the old ones are edited to new seasons, it's always a comment made on page 124536 which gets flooded in a matter of minutes so not really an edit.

The topic author can change the topic title to a new season but it is not enough. There is another step to do but with a request to forum moderator and moderation action: split the thread, old part (pages) will be trashed, and it's like a refresh for that thread with only new pages counting from page 1 for a new season. An example is a thread of Mitchell. Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns [Last update: 21-July-2026]. Mitchell trashed outdated pages many times. Topic author can lock the thread, create a new one, without support from moderators. Briefly, there are two options to do. Theymos split the thread and the split off part was moved to Archive. Not sure why it went to Archive, as it's more suited for the Trashcan, but whatever. I asked for this as the last 284 were pointless and no longer relevant (and thus spam).

That would keep all discussions organized instead of splitting them across multiple threads every season. No need for that. Just make one thread like, 'UEFA Europa league discussion thread' and let users come back to it every season to discuss, plus users should report the 'new ones' that may surface and mods should throw 'em right into trash. If I am not missing out on anything, this should make board much cleaner.

Because if I was to be a moderator on that board, if I see someone create a new thread on an already existing topic, I will definitely delete or lock it immediately. Because the only reason why I can allow a new thread of an already existing topic is if the original poster (OP) is no longer active on the forum to re-edit the thread from 2025/2026 to 2026/2027 Premier League or UEFA League Football discussion. So in a nutshell, this is just a simple issue that requires prompt action.

I also find it unpleasant the way the various league threads are organized, it does not make the discussion orderly. My suggestion is that for every new season, the previous season thread should be locked and new thread started for each of the leagues. This will keep the discussion fresh and save everyone the stress of reading thousands of pages to catch up with discussions. If the author of the previous league is no more active, the moderators can lock the odd thread and all discussions about the league should be in the new thread.

Nah it doesn't really work. At least not from my experience. I reported duplicate gambling threads in the past (the most recent one was regarding WC 2026 few months ago) and none of them got locked so far.

What you have just posted is full of false information. You should go and read the topic of the old threads to know if they were edited before posting something that is not true. The old threads are edited to new seasons and that makes the old thread very valid. Just go to the premier league and La Liga that Trofo created the topic and editing it every season which is on the gambling discussion board before posting something wrong.

This is a more logical solution, changing titles of a thread just turns these to mega threads and becomes a spam hub for anyone to dump text there and move on! Honestly to avoid these megathread bottleneck, am in support of new threads to be created for each season we have.. meaning those "old" general discussion threads should be locked by mods if we pass X number of posts or incase OP isn't on the forum or whatever reasons..

Your example is wrong. They are not duplicate threads.
One is self moderated. One is both sponsored and self moderated, also for previous season. I don't know how they can get a sponsor for a public thread, that's like advertisement outside signature space, but that's another discussion. One is open discussion for everybody. You can't force anyone to write to a self-moderated thread so this one was needed.

So many leagues but not same. It going to be one thread for one league and any similar league thread that get created after the first existing one has to be reported to moderator to delete it.

Every start of the season I think see threads like questioning Mods on what to do and sincerely I don’t think Mods can do Much about anything on this topics because they wouldn’t want to be too harsh, if you look at the three threads OP posted two were self moderated and one is general topic and i think this particular quote on the image below actually holds Mod tight not to lock or delete any of the threads. It would have been an easy decision to lock the thread if they weren’t edited to the current year and that makes it new thread. I think mods are keeping this threads as the dedicated threads for certain competitions, the problem will be new threads coming in now. We all also have a role to play by reporting spam threads or even posts from this threads to Mods to help clean them up most especially on threads not self moderated.
