I am trying to get something straight for here about those who are addicted to gambling do have same characteristics? I have a friend who is so much attached to gambling and everyone around him knows it was an addiction and when they try to talk to him in regarding the way and manned he is putting much interest to gambling he picks offences and stops to be talking to people because they are like trying to make him understand that his gambling habits is becoming excessive.

If it was you would keep talking to him to reduce how he keeps gambling or you would allow him to continue gambling? And even if he is not paying attention to you?

Yes, I will try to keep reminding him about his excessive gambling habit. Person who becomes addicted to gambling & develops a gambling problem does not merely harm themselves, the negative impact extends to their family & circle of friends. Indirectly, he will cause me trouble in the future if he keeps up that bad habit. When I feel my efforts are futile, I cut that person out of my circle of friends. Wink

Of course, friends are friends and we just can't push them off immediately because they are not gambling addicts or constituting nuisance without making relentless efforts to ensure they are better and useful again. Normally, am addict wouldn't easily take advise against his habit. Infact, anyone talking about it in the negative is seen as an enemy of progress and /or a bad person. So, we should always expect top resistance to any form of advise that you want to give out to them.  Perhaps, this help prepare our minds for what we may see when we try to encouragement them to turn a new leave. So, we just have to be patient with them, not pushing them out completely but trying our best and not giving up on them totally. We may not be doing some certain things with them any longer since they portray a wrong imagine, but we just have to continue talking and advising sometimes with hopefulness that they realize and do it right

First, I don’t think that those addicted to gambling are always aggressive, the melancholic type is also quite common.

He may not want to listen to what you have to say, but I don't think it's a good idea to leave him alone either, and your mere presence and understanding may be enough for him to rethink his habits in the future.

Addictive gambler - a gambler who always return because he has lost money (who would feel happy if he constantly lose money?) or because he wins but always dont feel like it is enough. These people are always unsatisfied with result. The activity they are into is one of the most stressful. That is common for people to lose temper when they are stress, and that is when lack of self-control comes out. People start to show aggression to everything that are irritants for them.

Someone who has lost big may be aggressive, but I think different people react differently. Some will be aggressive, while others may be upset. It depends on the person's personality. Some will keep their anger bottled up, while others will want to get it out immediately. So I don't think you can identify an addict by external signs alone.

Good point on the melancholy. I see aggressive people that don't seem to be addicted to anything all the time and I've seen enough melancholic people with addictions who just can't be bothered.

Short term aggression is common after taking big losses, whether one is addicted or not is irrelevant. At this point it's better to let them cool down alone and then try to work with the addiction if it's present later in a calm state.

I think whether a gambler reacts aggressively or not in situations like this is heavily dependent on their personality and how they react in their day to day lives. If they’re the type of person that become easily aggressive when faced with certain situations that seems unconventional for them, then they’ll definitely easily react that way when they lose.

Again, it depends on the gambler’s expectations, when gamblers gamble with the expectation of losing that bet, eventually losing the bet would only make them sad but will never push them into reacting aggressively in such situations.

The cure starts when someone realize that what i am doing is wrong if he acts defensive then its impossible that any advice works on him . If i was his friend i will not encourage him to do gambling also i will not argue with him everyday i would simply tell him that what you are doing is wrong and i did not want u to involve in it not because i want to control him but because i care for him. If he tries to ignore me i will also stop lecturing him for sometime because lectures every time pull people away more. I will also tell him that i am ready for help whenever he needed.

Isn't the reason quite clear? Losing!
I have never in my life seen anyone rejoice or feel happy when they lose. In any area of life, losing might seem normal at first and not cause much unhappiness; however, as time passes and losses mount, a person first becomes unhappy, and then states of tension and anger begin to emerge.
The situation takes on a different character when it comes to gambling. If a person has unlimited funds, they might not be upset about losing, yet psychologically, they still become agitated.
Gambling does not merely take a person's money; over time, it also damages their time, mental well-being, and nervous system.

from what I've seen and experience, constantly reminding a person or arguing with them usually doesn't change anything if they're not really admit that they have a problem or the problem is their own self, sometimes it just makes them more defensive. The best thing to do is to be honest about your concern without judging them, Let them know that you're worried because you care for them and not because you're trying to control their choices in their life. And if they keep ignoring you, then let them be... some people usually change when they decide that they're really ready but knowing they have someone who supports them without tolerating their behavior can make a real difference.

People will be offended and deny when called addiction is proof that he actually indirectly he has justified his bad activities but ashamed to admit for fear of people's views will judge negatively against him. Not all gamblers are like this, as it depends on the personality, level of addiction and mental state of each. All you need to do is stop getting involved in people's affairs too deeply, because he also has to take responsibility for his own problems.

The addicted gamblers I have seen will not listen to the advice of others. They do what they think is best for themselves. One of the many characteristics of addicted gamblers is that they are inattentive to other things. They have an attitude about when they can gamble again. For example, if you see people who are addicted to phones, they are scrolling for an unnecessarily long time. They have no profit there, they are just scrolling their phones for mental peace.

Addicted gamblers have an attitude of recovering money or earning money, so they are anxious about when they can gamble again. Even if they are engaged in other professions, there have been cases of losing jobs due to inattentiveness. Family breakdown has occurred due to irresponsibility towards the family.

If you are aware of the negative effects of gambling addiction, it will be easier for you to control gambling. Gambling for entertainment purposes and maintain self-control, as one of the main causes of losses in gambling is lack of control over emotions, excessive excitement, and failure to adhere to financial constraints.

Addicted gamblers are one of the most persistent people you could meet. They don't easily give up their gambling habit just because someone says so. Possibly he is annoyed because of his losses and thinking about it, and it adds to his frustration that someone is meddling in his business. Our former neighbour is like that. She doesn't want her kids going near her and asking for money to buy snacks, especially if she is losing.

If your friend is like that and you have given your advice already, then let him do what he wants as long as it doesn't affect you. You've done your part anyway.

I will start by saying that you cannot save who don't want to be saved, so if you decided to waste your precious time to advice him or her, but he chooses to be f***king stupid by ignoring you or stops talking to you, that's his own cup of tea, and the loss is on such person, not you, because you can always hold your head high that you tried your best to help him, but he refuses.

Though some might go the extra miles of reporting the situation to someone he or she greatly respect, so that that person can talk sense into him, but their are chances that he may not even listen, because addiction comes with a urge the victim cannot say no to when it comes.

I have discovered that one can't talk to someone who is deeply addicted to gambling, he will always want to prove a point to you as someone who's trying to help talk him out of gambling yet he still won't listen because he has been blinded by the games and addiction, it's very difficult once you are in a conversation with an addicted person to win because all they see are means to bet and recoup what they have lost which is not possible so they are not happy because the winning is not coming as expected and they become obsessed and angry with everyone close to them.

As a good friend if I was to be in your position in advising him, once I try my best in talking to him to reduce his bets and he bluntly refused on several occasions I will let him be because if you advice someone and he refuses to adhere to it the best way is to let him be and face the consequences when it arises.

When you are addicted, if anyone gives their opinion on how badly it can affect you, there will always be a reaction, and this is true for people who are addicted to gambling. Addiction will make you lose your mind, and you will find what you are doing interesting, and advice is not needed to stop. Instead, there are urges that trigger one to do more.

It depends on how close the relationship is. If it is someone who can be called family, you don't have any choice but to keep showing concern; but if it is an outsider, even if you want to advise, you have to know your limits.

They are certainly people who have a bad belief (even a wrong one if we want to be honest)
Logic doesn't work with them, they often convince themselves that they have a lucky hand on their hands and even if they have lost everything they will continue to play because they think they can win and recover.

In fact this is pure addiction.

All the people, who are suffering from addictions start acting nervous and aggressive at some point. This type of behavior isn't specific to gambling addiction. Aggression is a defense mechanism, but those addicts cannot realize that they are focusing their aggression at the wrong person. If I was a gambling addict, I would probably start getting angry as well, if someone told me to "stop ruining my life" or something similar. Unfortunately, almost all gambling addicts live in a mental state of delusion. They think that one big win could change everything, help them pay out their debts and achieve success. In most cases, that big win never comes and even if it does come, the gambler wants more and more, so he losses his profits.

Some addicts will always give you reasons for their struggles. I was advising an alcoholic in my area, and he told me that he drinks so much to avoid the pains of his mother's death. His mother died about five years ago, and he is still drinking irresponsibly. Instead of accepting his weakness and seeking help, he decides to make excuses. A gambling addict will never accept that he is mismanaging his finances. Only a few of them accept that they need help. You can only help someone who recognises that he is in trouble.

There is a saying that "the truth is bitter", but I cannot stop saying it. It is my responsibility to help people in any way I can, which includes advising them. It is up to them to accept it or feel offended.

No, I would not talk to him about it any more in that situation. If he doesn't want to listen anything like this and becomes aggressive when people talk to him about his addiction to gambling, the one thing he most likely needs is to see a specialist. We regular people don't know how to unhook someone from gambling addiction. We should let the specialists do their thing.

You would be aggressive if someone is trying to convince you that something you love is harmful, especially if you don't have a control of your emotions. Gambling is crazy addictive so it's like been asked to stop licking sugar. Gambling has destroyed so many people just like any other vice has but some feel that they have immunity. Most times people get themselves after they've lost it all but some won't because they are so in deep.
Everyone is free to do as they please and if I've got a friend who refuses to listen even when I give advice, I'd stop because the best way one can learn or stop such vices is when they tell themselves it's time to stop.
