Why do so many people prefer starting a business over getting a degree? Because a successful business can bring much higher income, while a job after a degree usually has a fixed salary. A degree takes about 4 years and costs a lot. A business can start with small capital and might grow 4 times in those same 4 years. Plus, many graduates still struggle to find good jobs.
•Do you think a degree is important to run a business, or can skills and experience replace it? •What would you choose: start a small business without a degree, or get a degree first and then start a business?
I want to start by saying that everyone can not have a degree and also at same time everyone can not be a business person so it all depends on individual and what they prefer over the other. Having a degree and being a business person are all good but if you ask me I will consider the both because I will make sure to have a degree and still have business and trust me you can be chasing your degree while still on business and degree sometimes help individual thinking to expand which will reflect in the business. Yes having the both is not a bad one though, but what of those that are only opportune to have just one, if you are to be in the shoe which would you prefer? No doubt having a degree is one thing everyone could wish for, but deep down if you ask me I'd prefer having a business, first if your not from a well established home, having that degree can only brought you to working in a government establishment as a civil servant or working for an individual establishment as a salary earner, that's why they will ask you if you've seen any salary earner that is worth a billion dollars or naira rather, most at times after all the hustle and buzzle at school don't be surprised at last you will end up being hired by an illiterate that knows nothing about education but his doing just fine in his business, so that alone has set so many people prefer business to a degree.

Just like we always say, what works for you might not work for others, and vice versa. Also, business is not for everyone. We can't just look down on degree holders because without them, how can you run a business? Where are you going to get your capital if you don't look for a job first and save money? Would the bank give you a loan without a good credit history? Unless you come from a wealthy background, you can't just start right away.
If you don't have that advantage, then you really need to take it step by step. First, get a degree, save money, then start a business. It just shows that a degree is where you start if you don't come from a lot of money.
I completely agree with that. We also need to talk about where it will all begin, because as you said my friend, a person can't just have enough resources to start a business, and if they come from a rich or wealthy family, they might not actually need to do much but just manage whatever their parents or grandparents have built so far, such as businesses, investments, and all that stuff. However, if the person isn't from a rich or wealthy background, they can't have the choice to start a business, but they will have to study, work hard, have some skills that they can sell, and then start earning money. Over time, they will be able to save enough to then start a business, but then it won't be about starting a business or doing for a degree, because they have already been through the second step. The only scenario I can think of where a person might have to make a choice is when their parents put both options in front of them, and ask them whether they want to study further or start a business, and they will be alotted an amount that they can use for either of the two options, and then it will be their choice to either choose to study first, get a job, and later go towards business, or simply start a business with the money and skip everything else.

People prefer business over degree because there are a lot of graduates that has failed to secure a job in the area of their specialty after acquiring a degree, which have make some of them to regret why they didn't use the money they used in acquiring a degree to start up a business instead. If there's no enough job to accommodate more graduates people might be discourage to even acquire a degree in the future because they can't spend four or five years in the university and they can't use what they studied to pay their bills and put food on their table.
The growth of many people succeeding without using their degree is really mind blowing. The thing is if you look at it people are now seeing degree as a risk investment with a very low guarantee return. The thing is when you put in the years you’ve invested in school and at the end it can’t even get you a middle life. But in business when you’ve invest these much time, you will see at the end you will have a business that yours. These days you will look at your community and you will see graduates Turing to bus drivers, POS owners, and so much more, jobs that don’t even require their degree. So today I will say degree don’t guarantee you a job and bills need to be paid. So maybe we are now getting in a world where degree are no longer seen as the end goal. These days a lot people are now combining educational knowledge and hustle to meet ends needs.

If owning and running a business were simply a matter of putting in enough time, millions of businesses would not go bankrupt every year. A degree has never guaranteed anyone a job or a bright future. That is just a misconception held by some people. Education and degrees provide a foundation and opportunities, nothing more. Degree has never been the final goal, regardless of the era. It simply opens more doors and gives us access to more opportunities.

It all depends on what the individual priorities or goals are, one can obtain a degree in business administration and still succeed in business by engaging the principles and skills obtained during his time in business school. On the other hand, another individual may decide to dedicate his time in going into full scale business, learning a trade and after a long period of time and adequate training may begin to do exploits in business as well and can later to for university education if for any reason he's interested in school degrees.

Everyone doesn't have the same objectives and goals. Some person will prefer to go to the university, get a degree and then start job hunting while some others would just prefer to start a business,as the business is growing they might use some of the money from the business to get degree. I have seen business owners who are running their businesses and the same time going to school(university). These people are not going to school because they want a degree to get a better job but instead they needed a degree attached to their name and to be fluent in their communication skills to improve their businesses. It is not that you have to study just to get a job. Educational qualifications will give you a different respect, you continue your studies, then do business, there is no problem. But I never support doing anything by completely ignoring education. When you continue your studies, more knowledge will expand in you, and thus you will be able to be more efficient in your life. The status of studies never decreases, you will always get the different respect that it has. That is why you should not see the degree and business separately, but rather you continue both, continue your business and at the same time continue to enrich yourself through education. Education is not only for jobs.

Some people are raised to run a business because their parents have similar backgrounds, and others focus their children's education more on it. This is a difficult question to answer because sometimes the answer depends on the facts and experiences of each individual. My parents preferred that I complete an academic degree, but I personally prefer business. It's much better when both can be pursued. Success in business and earning an academic degree are possible, although we know that focusing on both is challenging because we have to manage our time well. Doing business doesn't require a degree as long as one can focus on development. Achieving business success also requires time, patience, and discipline. Not everyone can achieve that because a business also needs at least 4 or 5 years to develop well.

School is very good but let's look around us among these two which one bring money fast, the way our population is growing is my mind blowing and that alone is a clear way for us to understand that getting a job with your degree will be very difficult, people that are doing business now actually went to school too, but some of them found themselves in that situation based on their responsibilities. For anyone to survive in this world it requires a lot of sacrifice, which was why so many people are not satisfy with only one source of income because responsibility are increasing everyday. Based on my own view it is not an embarrassment seeing a degree holder doing POS or any kind of business, even to richest people will see today do not make their money through degree and we should always look at that angle so that we shall be guided. Degree or not responsibility must come so far you are living on this earth.

I really don't think any Iis better than the other, be it business or acquiring a university degree. I think it's just personal preference or goals in life. It's good to aquire a university degree, even if you want to venture into business, but I still know that people also learn trade without a university degree and still become successful in their line of business. I really believe that most people venture into business rather than getting a university degree for 2 reasons. Firstly they feel they are not smart enough to aquire a university degree, so they prefer to just star a business and hopefully they can excel in it. Secondly some people just don't care about university degree, because of lack of employment after taking a long time to aquire a degree and still can't get a job, so they rather venture into business, rather than spend a long time acquiring education and still not getting a job.
In my opinion both are good to go. But the main reasons why some people prefer business over degree this days is the fear of life after a degree. Because many see their older siblings in environments moving around the street searching for jobs after being done with school, and yet found it difficult to secure jobs. They see as the only purpose of degree is to secure jobs, and you can't secure jobs unless you have connections because merit is not the only criteria for securing jobs. But I feel we can still secure a degree and still be doing business, because books is not the only thing we learned in school this days. during your stay in school, you can use the medium to build business connections with friends that are from various places to make your business go viral.

If I'd known 20 years ago that my country would end up like this, I wouldn't have taken school so seriously. Deep down I probably saw it coming but maybe I just didn't want to accept it.
Education gives you a lot but when it comes to making money, the time you invest in education doesn't always transform into higher income. There are also many geographic and political factors involved. Simply being well educated or highly skilled isn't enough to make good money. At the same time, starting a business is no guarantee of success either. We live in a time when earning an honest living and succeeding through your own efforts has become much harder.

There are so many reasons especially in this day and time for someone to decide to start a businesss rather than maybe go to school to earn a degree. For starters, especially in some placees in Nigeria, it is alot eaiser and cheaper to send your children to learn a trade skill than to go to school becuase certainly after learning the trade skill for like 3 months, the child can start working under someone and start feeding or supporting the house, to be frank that is alot simpler and functional to do than sending a child to earn a degree for 4/5 years and even after that still struggle to find job. Obviously, that's not a route i would take for myself or my child but then again, i can understand the decision most parents take when they just send thier children to learn under someone who already has a business or if the parent is the one with the business, the child automatically joins the hustle. I think they do that just for suvivial and you cant really question what a man does for survival, unless you have a better option to present to him.

This is so true, those who are earning for a living honestly. They are the ones who are not earning that much. Compared to those who are doing it in just knowing the trade secrets of the industries that they are in. Some side hustles allow them to earn better than the minimum and more than what the salary men can earn. I'm also thinking that what I've finished isn't that valuable in the end when most of the employers are asking more than the degree. I should have focused more on the skills and improvement of myself and work somewhere in the globe than to stay at my country. People glorifying business that it will make them rich but they know nothing about the hardship these entrepreneurs go through before reaching that success.

Even that business they feel it's more important than education requires some level of knowledge, that is to show that we can't do without education. Most people feel that since they can read and write there is no need of going into higher level but obviously there is need, because when you get there you would see that those things you think you know is little compared to the ones you will learn there. And also, if you're not educated there are places where you can't enter. not that someone is stoping you from entering but you have come to judgment that you can't express yourself very well if you get there, But those who are educated will not be afraid wherever they find themselves.

Because they see other successful people out there that are into business, and they think that they can do the same. While I'm not against that kind of mindset and I encourage everybody to have that TBH, we can't change the fact that business isn't for everybody. Entrepreneurship isn't for everybody. We can try, but only a few of us will succeed. Having a degree doesn't mean that you will have a fixed salary. You can still have a degree, but can have your own business as well. I mean I've seen many people doing that here, but there are also some who don't have a degree, but they're successful businessmen right now. This shows that for me, having a degree isn't a necessity anymore in order to become successful. Having a degree is important just so that if you failed in your business venture, you will still have your degree as your "Plan B" just in case you quit doing business already. Skills and experience are very important not only on business, but in every aspect of our lives. I'm not a businessman, and I don't have the passion to be one unfortunately, but I'd rather start a small business without any degree at all. Like what I said, we have very successful businessmen out there that don't have any degree, but are not successful. Zuckerberg is one of them. Experience will teach you how to be better.

See, acquiring knowledge is different from the business field, because if you are in business, you may not get the opportunity to study or earn a degree. I will definitely choose a degree because I want to gain knowledge. A degree may not lead to a fixed salary and you can prepare yourself to become a businessman. If you have knowledge, skills and experience, then you can definitely do any job, so you need enough knowledge to do business. So I support getting a degree the most.

After earning a degree, one has to face a lot of problems to get a job, yet one cannot get a job. Currently, there are many people who have earned a degree in most countries, but relatively few of them get jobs accordingly. According to the situation in the country, having a degree does not get a job, but rather one has to pay money and take a job by bribery, where most middle-class families are deprived of getting a job. However, I think that to start a business, it is possible to be successful if you have some educational qualifications and enough skills and experience. The earnings that will be earned in a year by doing a job are not very much, but currently there is not much salary in the job market, so the savings will not be very much. Alternatively, starting a business without a job will lead to success and financial progress, but it requires a lot of knowledge and experience. I think a high degree is not necessary to start a business, rather it is possible to be successful in business if you have some educational qualifications.

Your point is correct, but I think the two terms have almost the same meaning. For those who own a business, what they need at the beginning is knowledge of how to move forward so that their business can grow according to our basic goal of achieving success in business. And so it is with experience, a word with a fairly broad meaning but that experience is also based on doing what we do. For example, if we're an employee at a store when we first join we naturally need knowledge of how to serve customers well, with the goal of continuing our business. This allows us to gain experience and some knowledge of how to serve customers well, which in turn gives us the capital to start our own business. Of course, this is why we dare to start our own business because it's based on experience which gives us the knowledge and courage to open our own business. We realize that the knowledge and experience we have is now ready to be used. That's why I said earlier that in my opinion, these two things are more towards the same goal just slightly different methods, which can sometimes lead to misinterpretation. I will definitely choose a degree because I want to gain knowledge. A degree may not lead to a fixed salary and you can prepare yourself to become a businessman. If you have knowledge, skills and experience, then you can definitely do any job, so you need enough knowledge to do business. So I support getting a degree the most.
In my opinion, college isn't solely about securing a steady salary, but rather about the experience and knowledge we'll gain. Furthermore, we'll certainly gain more insight, as we often gain many things from college, especially new friends. This will help us develop a more focused perspective on our future. I think going to college solely for the hope of a steady salary is unlikely. Nowadays, we don't just rely on a diploma the experience and knowledge we gain from college will prepare us mentally. Because currently I see many people who have diplomas have absolutely no activities and more clearly they are unemployed, so what we need to do now is by having knowledge and experience in college we are able to compete for jobs through experience which teaches us a lot and with a diploma is no longer a strong guideline for this era.

Running a business doesn't automatically mean you will earn more than someone with a job. It depends on the size and performance of your business. If you only own a small shop or business, your income may not be higher than that of a highly skilled employee at a large company. Having a degree is an advantage, but it doesn't guarantee that you'll run a business better. It will all depend on you. If you don't know how to apply and make use of what you have learned, your degree will not be of much help. Having knowledge is completely different from knowing how to apply it in the real world. That is what really makes the difference, and why some people find a job after graduation while other do not.

So maybe we are now getting in a world where degree are no longer seen as the end goal. These days a lot people are now combining educational knowledge and hustle to meet ends needs. Education cannot be the end goal because the sole purpose of education is not just to get a job. They are different purposes of education to a human, most people just want to have the certificate, the skill, personal growth and at large for opportunities. Just that we all have the mindset that after a degree, job is guaranteed but it is definitely not that way.
