outbox suddenly missing all but 2 pages of sent messages

anyone else have their messages suddenly disappear? I had them earlier today and I went to go look for one and there is now nothing prior to July 21st

I know I did not sit here and delete hundreds of pages of messages.

Is this a forum issue? And can they be restored?

Agree with @nutildah, check your IP history first too.

There has been some hacked activity without any changes to your information, password, and other. I one of the victim, and guess what? the hacker use my account for requested a loans. The loans application requests are not straight requests for a big amount loans, but using my habits loan history around 300$.

Luckily, shasan rejected the loans request cause the address are different not using my usual address. The loans request are being deleted, and I confirm those loans application are not from me. The admin might only be able to restore them as archive files (though I’m not entirely sure). In any case, your messages remain stored in the server database and are only completely lost if six months have passed since both parties (sender and recipient) deleted the PM. https://bitcointalk.org/privacy.php

If it was a hack, just would expect messages after a certain period of time deleted, which will be the ones the hacker sent to other users, and not them deleting hundreds of messages you had already sent, that doesn't benefit them much.

If there's unusual activity, that's probably the culprit. If not, you can try clearing your cache or any other action you can do on your end. If that doesn't work, then reach out to the admin to give your account a look to check what may have went wrong. The forum keeps logs of pms, restoring them should be an option.

yea they look fine. some from when I travelled and logged in on mobile. but they are all in places where I was at.

If I had a satoshi for every time someone's PM's MaGIcALlY disappeared that were involved with the LONG dispute between vod and ognasty.......i would have 2 satoshis.

Overwhelmingly the most likely is that you just deleted them and forgot.

The next most likely is that your account was hacked by someone who wanted to delete them. I could give you your geolocation logs going back 6 years if you wanted to look into that.

There's less than a 1% probability of some forum issue. Nobody else is reporting missing PMs, and this is not an area that is touched by many people/systems.

PMs are permanently deleted from the database (and from all backups after ~6 months) when the sender and all recipients delete them. Note that the "save a copy in my outbox" option is off by default, which makes it more likely that senders "delete" their outgoing PMs. If the sender or one recipient didn't delete them, then they'll still be in the database, and I could still undelete them on request.

The requests returned the 499 status code, which means that you pressed the "stop" button in your browser. This caused the pruning of your PMs to be interrupted partway through. When your PMs are being pruned, your outbox PMs are deleted first, followed by your inbox PMs. Therefore, I would expect you to also be missing some inbox PMs.

Because this happened recently, and PMs are only ever deleted from the database in a cron job once per week, all of the PMs can be restored.

It's not like a hidden page as click on the link, I can see it when I click on "My messages" tab but honestly in years I only click on Inbox/ Outbox and did not pay attention on three choices in Preferences.

I always click on the square box and wipe out my Inbox and Outbox, while I never use Prune Messages.

as a follow up - I checked my pc history and I have never been to the prune page



perhaps it was on my phone? but if I did it - it was a total botch of whatever I was trying to do - I have never deleted any messages except for the ones i accidentally cc myself on and/or the forum ones telling me one of my posts was deleted. will check the phone in a bit.

as a final follow up - I checked my phone browser history and i see that I did indeed visit the prune page - it says the 4th but due to the time difference (-4) the time does match with the time theymos posted
