Lately I’ve been thinking about something I find interesting about competition. Why do some people become very supportive of an opportunity when they are the ones benefiting from it but suddenly become negative about it when other people discover the same opportunity?

For example someone discovers a business opportunity or another legitimate way to earn, they participate, benefit from it and continue doing it but when another person now ask about it or wants to join, the attitude suddenly change.
I understand that competition can reduce someone’s individual advantage. If more people enter, opportunities can become competitive and the reward eventually reduces. So from a  personal perspective keeping an opportunity to yourself can make sense is discouraging others really the same thing as protecting your own interest?

There is a difference between saying do your research before joining and deliberately making an opportunity sound useless simply because you do not want more proper competing with you. People sometimes want others to succeed but only up to the point where that success does not compete with their own.

So I’m curious, is this simply normal human competition or does it become unfairly holding others back?

There are also cases that you will show someone the way, but the person will try the thing and he will not make money from it. At times luck is part of what that helped and not just only the person's intelligence. I am not implying that intelligence is not important.

About the one that you asked, many people do no like competitions. It is in the nature of men, but no option as competition follows. They like to do what that will profit them more. More competition can mean less profit for them.

Provided that the person involvement wouldn't affect my own earnings or income, I would let the person know about what I'm benefitting from. However, some people keep their means of earning as a secret to avoid people from knowing their means of income for privacy sake.

Anyone that has an opportunity around him to make money and decides not to tell you that person isn't your friend especially, when you ask him and he refused to show you the way. Though, it's not everyone that can make money from what you're making money from.

I think it’s a mix of normal competition and insecurity. If someone benefits from an opportunity, they have every right to protect their competitive advantage. But there’s a big difference between keeping something private and deliberately discouraging others by pretending it doesn’t work.

You don’t owe everyone your secrets, but you also don’t need to mislead people.

I have always believed that even when people have equal opportunities, their earnings are not necessarily the same. In economics, the concept is that opportunity does not equal outcome. Several factors influence this, such as timing, risk, the ability to grow a business, and capital.

Competition is actually beneficial because it fosters a healthy race to provide the best products or services. Imagine there are 100 consumers being courted by two shops offering the same product. What can they offer to attract customers? Lowering prices, improving product quality, enhancing service, and so on.

The problem arises when one of the shops is hostile toward competitors and frequently undermines healthy competition.

IMO, it's competition that's already being built in our minds. Despite that we want others to win, we want to gatekeep something that we're benefiting from.

And can't blame the others for being like that because they might think that the opportunity have been taken away from them.

So, it's human nature when you told someone which one you're doing and you're profitable with it and then all of a sudden they want also to join as your competitor. You'll not want that to happen unless you're so open and you see a huge gap with the competition so it won't matter to you.

In my opinion, the OP himself explained the motives of this behavior in his post. It's just a fear of competition. Nevertheless, I know another motive. For some people, it's better not to advise them or offer them opportunities. Because if something doesn't work out for such a person, then he will definitely blame you for it! Because you recommended it. However, he will also blame you for discouraging him... In general, I think the essence of what I mean is clear.

I think not everyone has that mindset of being too optimistic by discouraging others, as our perspectives and points of view are different. Still if you are serious in venturing into a business, then what other people say shouldn't really matter that much.As a matter of fact someone wanting to take tips from you for a business doesn't really mean they are trying to compete with you. The only time you as an individual should have such thoughts is if they are going to open the business close to yours which is wrong. But apart from that, there is certainly no point in discouraging someone, either in cryptocurrency or traditional businesses. If you can't help them, then simply tell them you can't. If helping them will cost you your customers then take proper precaution and make a reasonable decision. I believe it's all about personal satisfaction, that's all....

So from a  personal perspective keeping an opportunity to yourself can make sense is discouraging others really the same thing as protecting your own interest?

If you are discouraging others from partaking in the same opportunity you are benefitting from and you know that their investment won't affect your interest, that is extremely wickedness that is as deadly as witchcraft because it proves you don't want the progress of others.
Someone people deliberately do that because they don't want others around them to be as independent as they are especially when it has to do with gathering as friends or in a family where those who have money have to be mostly respected.
So the competition will always be there and so also, because others may be envious and jealous of their prospects, they will preferably won't share opportunities with them because if they do, when those you have helped gets to a certain level of success, they will begin to challenge you because they now have the same resources that kept you in the great view.
This is just where the competition behind such strange attitudes of hiding opportunities against another especially to those closed to you..

So I’m curious, is this simply normal human competition or does it become unfairly holding others back?
This mentality is very common with many people and it's normal, we are humans but not much different from animals, we have the same instincts after all and we reproduce the same way, the difference is that we are smarter than them. But do you want my honest opinion about it? I help others just to artificially create a competition so it will motivate me to further develop myself or the thing that I do, so I'll always be one step away above them and this drive will allow me to be better than them. That's how my mind works. I'm not afraid of competition because I don't want to be bad and without competition, I want to be the best and clearly visible among other competitive persons or businesses.

People are afraid of competition, while providing a product or service to the marketplace. Also some people get jealous/defensive if they see that you are making more money than them.

I think it depends on what kind of person you are. Although, at some point, it's normal to feel competitive when there's a competition. Just like what you've given as an example, a person may be happy to share the opportunities he discovered if it doesn't affect the income or profit he's acquiring. But if sharing that opportunity means being in a competition with each other and putting your business at risk, of course, your survival instinct would tell you not to share the same opportunities to other.

Competition will always be there in businesses and it's normal especially if you're in the same industry. But it can still be a friendly competition without dragging others just for you to rise to the top. That's a different story. It's like you found the "opportunity" or the idea to what will make your business thrive even more. Will you share it to others? No. You'll have to let other competitors find their own "opportunity".

There Is a school of thought where if everyone becomes rich, who will be the one to polish your shoes or clean the dishes, there is a level you reach when you know that information is power and it don't just get handed out. Plus aside that some people take the knowledge you pass to them for granted and most time they go overboard with it and ignore the warnings or the limitations of that business idea you give them.

But the only considerable reason to gift that business information is if that information doesn't affect oneself and everyone can coexist with zero casualties.

That is competition but eventually the other person will also learn about it.

Now if that second person is a trustworthy and can be a worthy business partner, then why not start the journey with them? Many times the other person will not be interested and back out in which case you are only in luck and they cant say later that you did not tell them or have a valid reason to hold a grudge against you.

Often two people competing for the same business will not always do well, you never know your competitor might end up being very bad at it and anyway move away.

I am guessing it can also be based on history and not just being human.

We saw a lot of businesses go down because competition was created. From soaps to electronic devices and other necessities. Even a quality branded canned sardine can suddenly be down in sales when another cheaper one comes out with almost the same taste as it. I think this is why others discourage another so that they won't end up the same way.

Fear should also be considered. What if they ended up better than me? What if the food they bring will be more savory than yours? People think differently. Some will share their secrets and let others benefit, but some don't.

So I’m curious, is this simply normal human competition or does it become unfairly holding others back?
Everything is not about competition because you might introduce someone to something that you know that he has the capability to do, but the person may not be serious about it, which will make him or her not to get the kind of result you got, and another thing is that the person might even go there and do one evil thing like fraud, and his actions that will put you that brought him in serious problem.

I have personally seen a guy that his boy that learn how to do a particular business under him graduated and went to almost all his customers behind him to try to convince them to patronize him instead than his boss, and he is offering his product at  a cheaper price, but since nothing hide forever, when he gets to know of it through another customer that refuses to listen to that his boy's bidding, the first thing he said was that, this is why most people no longer help people, because some tend to reward kindness with evil. The main reason am saying this is because experience has taught people bitter lesson, and so many factors is responsible for people to behave in such a way or refuses to share an earning opportunity, because some good you do might put you in serious problem.

I would see it from two perspective, a just natural mindset of humans, trying to protect what they are enjoying and avoiding competition due to the fear of getting below, and secondly, the greedy part of it.

Some people are so greedy that they don't want another person to even taste a little of what they are enjoying from such investment or business. They rather lie about it, tell you only the negative side of it, leaving the positive side whereas they know that the positive side outweighs the negative or risk. This is humans been very greedy and isn't good. Such greed prevents the community from growing, because if such opportunities were shared, others can benefit from it and also grow along.

On the opposite, some don't share such opportunities because they want to remain at the top, just a natural feeling. Thus is also just like the first, but the difference here is that such a person would not do anything to stop you from getting involved if you find other means to learn and grow, but will only seek for other means to grow more and still remain relevant or let me say more important than you just to r main at the top.

I believe fighting to always remain at the top is just a natural human behavior, but discouraging others or doing negative things outrightly to prevent others from growing or benefiting is pure greed which isn't good at all.

Your question should have been, "why do some people do it," Because It's not everyone that discourage others not to do a particular thing that can earn them money. Yes, in some cases it's because the person doesn't want competition but that's not sensible reason IMO, because whatever someone think he or she is doing to earn money, someone somewhere is also doing that thing, so it is not as if the person is the only one earning from that thing, that's what I said competition is just a nonsense reason to me.

Other reasons could be due to hatred that the person have for you, someone dislikes you and is not willing to guide you but will rather discourage you from doing what he or she is doing that made them successful. There are other reasons like character default, the person could look at you are see from your character that you are not really fit to get this kind of information that will help you be like them, and the other one is also difficulty of what they are doing, the tasks and sacrifices could be so difficult that they know you can not do it, so they will prefer not even discussing the opportunity with you.

If someone doesn't want to share an opportunity with you, he or she can have personal reasons different from what I have said, because the reasons I listed out is based on what I have hear from other persons too, I have head someone say, "I gave them  this opportunity and they tarnished my image, gave him an opportunity and he messed up things."

Haven't heard of trade secret before? This is normal in every part of the world. If you are doing business and you see an opportunity where you have advantage over other people, it will be so useless of the person to want to reveal that secret to other people to do the same unless it's a public opportunity which I can't hide. If the opportunity is secret and develop by me alone, I will not tell other people because it belongs to me and I decided who and how to share it.

Look around you and see what the rich folks are doing that you are not doing right. They might not be better than you but they have the opportunity to get some information to be ahead of you and they will not let you get that, this is why information is very powerful. Before any person is going to reveal there secrets or success to winning, you must be valuable to them and something they can also get back in return, that's how the world works.

In my opinion, such an attitude is perfectly natural, because that is simply human nature. When we discover a business opportunity to generate income, our first instinct is naturally to look out for ourselves. That's just how it works. More people join, more competition, smaller profits for everyone. So it makes sense if someone wants to keep it to themselves.

It is worth noting that there is a difference between "not wanting to share" and "deliberately trying to bring someone down." Saying, You should do some research first, the risks are high, is a fair stance. However, claiming it is no longer worth it while you yourself are still active in that business, that is gatekeeping. And that is highly unfair. In my view, the healthiest approach is to be open about the existence of an opportunity, but let others put in the hard work to get the details.
