^^ I wouldn't call altcoins "failed experiments". In fact history of altcoins is a fascinating one since it speaks of human traits and shows how innovation is buried under greed.
In the early days when there was only Bitcoin, we saw actual developers with cool ideas. Even some very simple ideas like what Litecoin had (decrease time between blocks to 2.5 instead of 10 minutes). And when they created their alternative-crypto-currency, they were actually aiming for innovation and to produce something good.
So at that time, only a handful of projects existed. They weren't creating altcoins to fill their own pockets, or at least it wasn't their primary objective!
But this all happened during the time when bitcoin was mostly unknown and its price hadn't soared yet.
With the price rises and breaking records (like reaching $1 for the first time) a lot of people started "flooding in" to make profit. Amongst them were people who decided to create altcoins and make money by selling that to people! Then slowly that flood turned into a "tsunami" of altcoins and later on tokens when token creation platforms like ethereum were introduced.
This is why today it feels like "all" altcoins are failed experiment. Because even if someone has a cool idea, it will be buried under the hundreds of shitcoins and shittokens that are being advertised on the internet and are stealing attention.
For example I personally love the idea of DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) as a replacement for blockchain. That didn't go anywhere. We only saw a bunch of weak coins, some centralized, some with premines, etc. and the idea got buried under the shittoken waves.
How many topics in this board are talking about the technology now? In the past 10 pages? 50? 100? 1 or 2 if we're lucky...
The topics are usually about "will this shitcoin be profitable"...
