As the title says, this is all due to a routing error at Teraswitch. Solana briefly touched the remaining 19.9 million SOL before reaching the finality halt threshold of 33.33%(1).
Quote

2/ It was a routing fault at @Teraswitch. They’ve published a writeup already, which is more than most providers manage. A default route out of their Miami site got advertised with the attributes stripped off it. A route reflector in Amsterdam then handed it to every site in EU.
3/ The edge routers there treated it as their own local default and preferred it over the real one. The core underneath refused it as invalid. Twelve sites ended up with nothing valid to forward to.
LON1, AMS1-3, DUB1-2, FRA2, SGP1-2, TYO1-3. North America never noticed.
4/ Took them ten minutes to find it. Traffic was back by 04:16:15 UTC. Miami is still off their backbone while they work out what generated the route.

Multiple ASN providers experienced simultaneous outages, revealing hidden infrastructure dependencies beyond simple hosting share. The largest ASN holder was hosting over 27% of total staked SOL at 94%(2). The new requirement of a Maximum Concentration Limit of 25%(3) actually saved the network this time, but it looks like it has to be tightened even more, for example to 10% for each providers.

Altcoin are so funny man Grin Grin, they keep saying they are decentralized only to find out that more than a quarter of their total validator use same infrastructure provider, a routing error is enough to almost cripple the entire blockchain. The worse thing is, solana is not the most centralized blockchain, there are blockchains with less than 40 validator and the validator knows each other, almost like private consortium and there is a blockchain that only have single sequencer to run the entire blockchain that secures $12.7 billion TVL...

AFAIK, the 25% ASN limit only enforced to validator with delegated funding from the Foundation which is 50% of the active validator, the other 50% are free to choose where they run their validator, I agree with the 10% cap, it should work better than the 25%.

The centralized altcoins always find a way to hide it and make sure that they are the ones making profit. I remember when creating new altcoins was a trend, they came up with the idea of "premining" the coin so that they could own a large amount of the supply and dump it on the market to make profit. Obviously people caught up and started hating premined coins. But the scammers came up with a solution "shadow mining"! They did the premine but in a covert way so that people could not easily figure out and continued scamming them.

Things haven't changed much, they keep finding new ways to create centralized shitcoins to make money. If you compare what is said about majority of altcoins in their advertisement with what really happens on the chain you'll see 90% of it is lies.

This is why Bitcoin is so good and strong. What is said in the whitepaper and what is actually happening on chain are the same. There is no hidden agenda, no hidden centralization, no hidden premine, etc. So bitcoin keeps growing every year while these shitcoins shrink...

Altcoins are simply failed experiments. A quick cash grab from the devs. Nothing useful or exciting about them. Only a small few are actually worth it (like LTC & XMR). The rest are simply junk. Why would you want faster confirmation times and cheaper fees, when the underlying Blockchain network is extremely-unreliable? It's this reason why no altcoin has been able to topple Bitcoin. And between altcoins themselves, no other competitor has been able to outmatch Ethereum. Both in terms of decentralization and censorship-resistance (although ETH has gotten less-decentralized over time).

Solana is just like BNB and the rest of the other centralized cryptocurrencies. Perhaps, even worse, because it has been subject to multiple network outages. Not even XRP has faced a disruption at the same level as Solana. When will people learn?

^^ I wouldn't call altcoins "failed experiments". In fact history of altcoins is a fascinating one since it speaks of human traits and shows how innovation is buried under greed.

In the early days when there was only Bitcoin, we saw actual developers with cool ideas. Even some very simple ideas like what Litecoin had (decrease time between blocks to 2.5 instead of 10 minutes). And when they created their alternative-crypto-currency, they were actually aiming for innovation and to produce something good.
So at that time, only a handful of projects existed. They weren't creating altcoins to fill their own pockets, or at least it wasn't their primary objective!

But this all happened during the time when bitcoin was mostly unknown and its price hadn't soared yet.
With the price rises and breaking records (like reaching $1 for the first time) a lot of people started "flooding in" to make profit. Amongst them were people who decided to create altcoins and make money by selling that to people! Then slowly that flood turned into a "tsunami" of altcoins and later on tokens when token creation platforms like ethereum were introduced.

This is why today it feels like "all" altcoins are failed experiment. Because even if someone has a cool idea, it will be buried under the hundreds of shitcoins and shittokens that are being advertised on the internet and are stealing attention.

For example I personally love the idea of DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) as a replacement for blockchain. That didn't go anywhere. We only saw a bunch of weak coins, some centralized, some with premines, etc. and the idea got buried under the shittoken waves.
How many topics in this board are talking about the technology now? In the past 10 pages? 50? 100? 1 or 2 if we're lucky...
The topics are usually about "will this shitcoin be profitable"... Sad

imo pooya's right, there's good ideas in some alts but the execution is really bad (and it's typically like all about money for everybody involved: from devs to investors, everybody wants to just get rich). And yea, when you have like 100 new shitcoins coming out of ETH's ass everyday it's just a struggle to find the one that's here to literally try & make crypto better. even shitcoins have some good ideas sometimes, it's right there in the whitepaper & it's achievable too with the right people, but noone tries to translate it into reality because.... like crazy russian hacker says, safety money is number 1 piority!

Such outages reveal that the network has become distributed and not decentralized. Four ASNs hold two-thirds of the stake SAM allocates, the number is less than BNB, and the network was 20 million SOLs away from the 33.34% threshold. 34% threshold is easily accessible at the moment, which means that these events are likely to be repeated.
