If you don't trust your own business and you don't use them personally, then what's the essence of building it and promoting it to others?  That could only create doubt and confusion to your future customers, and worst is they will never bite your business, the same way you don't promote your business not even to your family and loved ones.

So its really a big key for business owners to create a business that is first beneficial on their own, on their family and friends before it will be introduced to other people. Knowing that, the business will be more successful and profitable because its evidently made for the love of the people around you, and huge sales and profitability could only come next.

I don't think a business owner has to use their own product to run a successful business.

What do you understand by business? To me, business is about selling products for which there is market demand, rather than necessarily thing we personally love or need to use ourselves.
Every product is made or sold for a specific group of customer. So if you aren't part of that target market, there is nothing wrong with not using your own product.

Yes, business is all about profit, but it is important for people not to allow greed to make them only focus on profit. I think the best way to even make a profit in business is to choose quality because this is what customers are even more interested in. If you think of making profit as the most important, you may not even have the interest to give customers quality, and this substandard or low quality is what kills a business.

There are some customers who may be looking for cheaper products that have low quality, but if you follow what they want, it can affect the business. If you focus on quality, you will have the confidence to increase the price of the product, and people will definitely still come for the product, and this is profit. Business is all about solving the problems of others, and with this, profit is certain, which you don't even need to strive for.

Hmm. I do agree that it should be something that you actually use and there's the Golden rule that says

"Treat others the way you would like to be treated"

In that sense and if you think it's okay for you, then it should be okay and is going to be ethical. I think as long as you are transparent with it and being honest, it will be okay. I think that's better than being dishonest about a specific product or something.

I use many international products, don't even know who is producing them, but even if I find it out using the internet, I can't find out if they even use it or not. Like the CEO of McDonald's once made a video of eating their new burger, and he merely bites it, and social media was full of his actions. They said he knew there was something wrong in the burger, so that's why he was not eating it.

Well, I call that propaganda because if he knew there was something wrong, why would he bring the same one to his table? He would ask the people involved to give him a better one, that will only look like the real one they will sell in their franchises. So, I am sure he took a small bite for some other reasons.

Now, speaking of selfless and selfish, I won't use these terms. I would use terms halal and haram because I am a religious person, and I believe if someone is not honest in their dealings, then they are earning haram, and no matter how much haram they earn, it never has any good impact on them. They are always suffering, either mentally or physically. They are always surrounded by difficulties. In short, my religion stops me from selling wrong and fake material. If I am selling one, I should tell the truth. Lying is not healthy for anyone.

There are advantages and disadvantages to homemade patronage, but on a general view, I will not advise someone to encourage for doing this, instead you can decided to engage on different medium through which you can advertise your service or products, there are many platforms online and we can take advantage of them to promote what we do to get brother exposure, this is more better than relying on what your close confidence could do for you.

Regardless if the business cares about their customers or not, their priority will always be "to earn". What's the point of starting a business if your goal isn't to make profit? What you're calling a selfless business, they also prioritize income. It's just that, they care about their customers and the product or service they offer. Satisfying your customer is a way to build your reputation and keep your business running. Some business becomes "selfish" when they started growing. Because they already built their name, people will still buy their product or service even if there are changes or reduce in quality.

If you cant recommend what you sell yo your loved ones or consume what you sell it means what you sell is not good for public consumption and this can be considered as a crime. This is a kind of business that customers are not considered but the main interests is just to make money and any business that can be recommended to loved one or used by the owner it means if the public should know what is behind the business no one will patronise the business any more. The first thing in a business is to render a good service to customers because customers always comes first and not the interest of the owner of business.  When interest is considered first it can affect attention of giving the customers the best service.

As uneng said, every product is aimed at a specific group of customers, and everyone has different needs. Every family also has different financial situations and priorities, so not every product will be suitable for everyone.

Let me give you an example. A friend of mine sells sex toys. But he is single, and his family members have almost no need for those product. Would you call them fake or lowquality product just because he doesn't use them himself?

In business, profit is still the most important thing, and it has to come first. Because that is how your business survives. You can provide the best product and services, but if you can't make a profit, then what's the point of running a business?

I do believe that anything we are selling or promoting to others, our loved ones whom we are close with, should have a taste of it(know about it) because they are the ones who will support and encourage us in the little way they can. Firstly, the type of product should be the main variable here, for me the quality should not be a problem because that is my top priority as well. I will always choose quality over quantity everyday no matter the price, and that would be my focus when starting a business.

Op did not consider that the type of business one is involved with has a great role to play when it comes to advertising to family and friends. You don't need to advertise your business to your friends and family if the business doesn't align with their preferences even if what you do is of top quality. Assuming you produce or sell fertiliser but none of your friend is a farmer, would you care to advertise your product to them knowing they don't use the product? I guess no because you might be wasting your time. There are so many things to consider when advertising to your close relatives or friends, it doesn't always mean your product is inferior if you choose not to. In some cases, some people choose not to promote to family members because they might patronize but without pay which is set back for every business.

I will raise a real example that happened in my country, the largest cigarette factory. Where the owner and his family never smoked at all, but they managed to build more than hundreds and even thousands of factories.
The answer lies in market demand and making a profit. Cigarette factory owners don't need to be smokers, right?
Similarly to what you discussed, that the goods we sell even though they are not offered to the closest person does not mean that the goods are dangerous or bad, but depends on the needs, choices, and preferences of each.

A big test of the authenticity of a product is if the producer makes use of it, or if their loved ones do.

No business man or woman that will buy goods for $10 and sell the goods for $5 just to make others happy (their customer). so, I disagree with you that there are people who go into business just to make others happy and money isn't their priority. OP, am having an issue with your explanation of self and selfless business, I don't think regardless of the type of product or its quality, any business man is selfless, the only selfless business I know are NGO's or charity organizations, all the business strive to earn money for personal survival and for some people there ideology is selling quality to attract customers (depending on the product) while some disregard Any form of quality checks.

There is a very good reason why you should recommend your love ones to do the same business you are doing more especially if that business is yielding good profit.The reason is because other people have to continue from you, when you keep the secret of the business you are doing to yourself, that is actually a sign of greed, and also a sign that you don't want other people to progress.

Those who are into business will likely begin with their family members, friends and people around them it is through them that they can start marking is to other people no may not be willing to patronize them at first but in a situation where the business is illegal or the product is bad, some business owners may not be willing to avoid selling to their friends they may try to avoid it getting close to their family members but not their friends cause they believe their friends can get affected they won't be responsible but not their family members. You can be your most patronage yet it could be a poison, so personally I think I prefer people sell or do business for money and then also have serving quality as a side goal but I personally will not go into any business if not to make profit but not on the detriment of the users. Once you decide to enter business, it's already a selfless desire to welcome everyone to buy on your business. The same way that every business owner aims for a high profitability and stability of income, I think that's not being selfish, that's the goal of every business to make profits so that their business will thrive and will stay longer and competitive in the market.

It's also an additional income if you let your love ones know your business, at least they can share it to their circle of friends and relatives. Except if they don't like the idea of the business, they won't really mind sharing it to others.
