So, what’s the point of gambling, then? Ah, I get it. It’s all about the process and the entertainment, not making money. In short, Chinese gamblers follow the same principles as gamblers everywhere.

Perhaps this question should be asked in the Chinese section? But even if you were to set aside 1% of the winnings for these superstitions, that’s a very small amount (unless, of course, the prize is a billion-dollar jackpot).

It seems to me that, either way, the Chinese gambler ends up at a disadvantage. If he sticks to the tradition, he’ll be left without any prize money, since he’ll give it all away. If he doesn’t, he’ll have no luck and will lose his bets. So, what are Chinese gamblers to do in such a situation? Are they doomed?

I consider this superstitious nonsense, as it can have absolutely no effect on the RTP or the internal algorithms (or rules) of the gambling games. It makes no difference to the slot machine, roulette or cards whether or not you are carrying a lucky rabbit's foot.

I haven't heard about this so called myth, and probably that is the reason why, it's because it could be just made by someone and it didn't get any support from the gamblers themselves because it really doesn't make any sense.

We gamble to have some fun and win money. And when we win, obviously we wanted to enjoy the fruit of it by treating our family or even buying things. Not that we are material person, but that's how we will go instead of playing it again and donating the money back to the casino.

I would have to believed if it is get your initial capital and then the money that you have won might be used, but just 1%? That is something unbelievable from a gamblers viewpoint.

It might be the belief that the Chinese people grow up with and not something compulsory to key into because there are Chinese gamblers gambling for the sake of making profit like the normal gamblers.

Where's the fun without enjoying your profit. If it's a compulsory thing for gamblers in China and I'm a from China, I wouldn't gamble at all.

I definitely don't think all Chinese gamblers believe this rule. Have you ever walked into a land based casino and seen how many Asian gamblers are in the Baccarat room? I have a whale under my affiliate code on a few casinos that likes to go crazy playing Baccarat as well.

What you heard may be something that was spoken in their culture many years ago, but I do not believe todays culture believes that.

Well, I hope the application of this principle starts and ends in China because I cannot be any party to it. I agree to doing some charity with my winnings and I always do it whenever I win big, but that should be 10% or less of my winnings in line with my personal beliefs.

I don't like cultures that suffocates people. If I knew this person, I would like to ask him what happens to the capital I used and those I've lost prior to winning, how do I recover them since I'm meant to share everything I won. My gambling wins is a compensation to me from the casino and I'm inclined to making the best out of it, else there's no point gambling in the first place.

I'm sorry, I haven't heard about this practice, neither would I believe in such practices.

If there is or was such myth in China, that only 1% of your money should be used for gambling, then they should have been one of the most resistant to gambling people. They should be less affected by addiction. However, whenever I travel, if I see a casino then there are definitely Asian people gambling. If the myth would work, why gambling became so popular and why it is illegal in China?

Can you post the link of the source of this "myth"? I believe it's not a "myth", but a superstition based on their culture/belief about "bad-karma" and wealth.

Although, what would that say about those Chinese people who "trade" as a profession? Because skilled "trading" is actually a sort of "gamble" too, but in a different form.

They are ignoring the culture or they are not foolish? What I see about it is that they are not stupid. If anyone win in gambling and not giving anyone the money won, I do not dislike the idea.

This is the first time I've heard of this Chinese mythology. I don't really believe in anything like this, that if you win by gambling and you have to give away everything from the winning amount to keep winning.
And if this is to be done, where will the profit of a person actually be from gambling?
Because in the case of gambling, most of the time we face loss and win very rarely. And if we cannot keep that amount ourselves, then where will the profit actually be? Then of course we will not be able to have fun from gambling.
But yes, if someone wins the jackpot, then if he wants, he can share a partial amount from there, I would appreciate it but I won't say that will increase his winning rate.

Anyways, am not a Chinese and I haven't heard this before. But then, if this is true, what then is the need and value for gambling? If its a culture that is kept, that the winner shouldn't enjoy the benefits of his winnings but should be shared to other people, who then continually pays for the losses the gamblers incure all along before they experience a win?

Could this be real, or is just an illusion. Just too ridiculous to be true, but then, maybe we have to wait for confirmation from some Chinese people here in the forum. But if it's true, it's just so funny.

I've not heard about such thing before and it's a bit funny. I'm happy I'm not in China and thank goodness such things only exist there. Why on earth will anyone want to gamble when they cannot spend the profits they made? Isn't that ridiculous? Though I understand that some kind of myths or traditions restrict alot of things but I doubt gamblers will actually care about such. Same way religions like Christianity and islam are against gambling and consider those who are into gambling as sinners, that's just how things like this are. People who gambling do not pay much attention to such things except they are extremely tight with their belief. I mean, I won't want to go through those emotional stress involved in gambling just to give out the money to someone else..

Yeah, there is a similar superstition here in the Philippines. I used to frequent e-bingo shops, and I've encountered gamblers giving some tips to other people after winning a decent amount of money. They believe that by doing that, they are inviting luck into them again. I am not really sure if this specific superstition is big in my country since I've only encountered several people who do this throughout the time that I was active on e-bingo shops. Also, I have a feeling that this superstition might be inspired by the myth you mentioned, because a lot of Chinese people have immigrated to my country since pre-colonial times.

I have never heard about this culture, but it's funny. If you keep sharing your wins, how would you have money to keep gambling? The culture is promoting gambling as a form of entertainment and not a means to make money. Some people would go to the casino and sit down without playing any game. They will be waiting for someone to win so that the money will be shared. It makes more sense if the culture allows gamblers to allocate a high percentage to themselves, while the balance can be given to those who need help. The gambling accounts need to be funded from wins.

I have heard of some odds belief from chinese people and that I do understand if they're so firm with their belief. But not on this one, if they're saying that they shouldn't spend for food the gambling profit that they have made. What it is intended for? to gamble again? that's kind of funny because this kind of belief I only of not eating it is through about the thieves. There's a shame to feed their family if their money is robbed. But that's not the same from the gamblers and I think it's okay to spend that for food.

This is just another superstitious belief knowing that Chinese believe on many things especially on anything related to Feng Shui.

Damn, first time I knew about that, but I don't really care. I mean everyone has their own way of treating gambling so if that's how they see it then that's on them. Me, I'm just living in the current world. As long as I don't steal the money I gamble with or cheat the casino, I consider it hard earned money and I deserve to enjoy whatever I win, if I win.

To be honest, I’ve never heard of this exact rule - that you’re not supposed to spend or “eat” money won from gambling and that you have to give away all your winnings - as some kind of general Chinese tradition. Chinese culture definitely has a huge number of superstitions related to gambling, luck, numbers, colors, and even how you behave at the gambling table, but it’s quite possible that the rule you described only exists in a particular region, family, or group of people.

The idea itself is pretty interesting, though. Maybe the point is that money you got through luck should partly be given to other people, so you can “share your luck” and keep it going. Similar beliefs exist in different cultures, although the specific rules can be very different.

I think they should apply that saying to themselves first before judging or spreading it to other people.

Not everyone believes that, but the fact that gambling is banned in China means it's against what they teach or believe in.

Just like with people in general, not everyone is the same. Among Chinese people there are believers and non-believers too, that's just normal. But when it comes to business, it's guided more by the law of the country than belief. So as long as they can legally operate in a country that allows it, they can still run the business even if they're Chinese. Maybe some of them feel guilty about it, but in business sometimes money becomes more important than belief.
