Where it does win is that the cost is written down before you go. I keep a spreadsheet of these, and the ATM terms come in four shapes: a flat fee per withdrawal, a percentage, a free monthly allowance and then a fee, or no ATM access at all. A few cards publish nothing. Worth knowing which one you hold before you need the cash.
