I still need to spend some fiat regularly, so my strategy would be something like 80% Bitcoin and 20% everything else.

That 20% is almost like a hot wallet because I sometimes dabble in stablecoins, altcoins, skin trading, etc.

That 80% part might sound risky, but it shouldn't be if I can stack it up every week or month.
But can that 80% serve as emergency funds? No, and you also don't intend to be saving for that purpose. Then, does that 20% cover emergency situations as well? I believe it can only be able to do that if it's significant enough to cover the expenses an emergency might require, which means that the total amount which is being divided into the 80% and 20% parts must be pretty high. What I'm trying to say is you didn't mention anything about your emergency funds, and we are basically discussing about that and whether Bitcoin can be used for that purpose.

In my opinion, any person who saves their money in Bitcoin definitely don't intend to use that money for anything until it reaches a value that they have always had in mind and wanted to achieve through their Bitcoin investments. And besides, even if you include your emergency funds into your Bitcoin investment, you are going to have a hard time if you need some liquid cash for an emergency and the price of Bitcoin is not favourable at that moment.

In my opinion I think putting all your money into bitcoin investment without having an emergency fund is a bad idea. I understand that some people will say instead of the money just lying in the bank with no profit and might even loss its value overtime, based on inflation,  but we should not also forget that emergency don't announce itself, it just comes up unexpectedly, that's why it's called an emergency.
I believe you should investment with your discretionary income and also don't forget to save your emergency funds, so you don't have to sell your bitcoin when you have an emergency. This is just my opinion and I am open to other opinions too.
Having all your investment in Bitcoin is not a bad idea at all, the bad idea is not keeping emergency funds against anyone that will come up. Normally, the emergency funds are not part of investment capital, it is supposed to separate money that is set aside to deal with other challenges issues that will arise to avoid tempering with your Bitcoin saving pending till your target price and time for your Bitcoin investment.

However, if you are afraid of inflation, you can use stable coin to hold your emergency funds, so that when the need arise, you will just exchange the to fiat and make use of them. And subsequently, if the emergent funds keeps increasing without any use, you can take some part of the money to buy more Bitcoin to your portfolio in order to have more accumulated Bitcoin.

Any investment without future plan will not work, you have to plan yourself so that you can hold for long and not to be forced to sell under pressure and at loss.

I didn't mention anything because I assumed Bitcoin would be the emergency funds, like what was said in the title and I can spend that 80% right away if needed.

I can also split that 80% into two parts like minor and major emergencies, since we never know what problem we can suddenly face.

I get your point, but for me it's not as bad as you make it sound. If I need to sell everything at a loss, then that's on me for taking the risk on Bitcoin.

With these risks: Freeze, Depeg, I believe that stablecoins are not much better than bitcoin for emergency fund. With me, my emergency fund is in cash or bank account with fiat currency there: no gold, no bitcoin, no stablecoins, no shitcoins.
Yes, the risks with stablecoins are incredible, but the options you have in your alternative emergency fund are very impressive. In fact, I highly recommend it, given how things are going in the world. I'd say the best thing is to have a good portion in cash, right? In case of global blackouts or something like that (it might sound a bit skeptical), but that option has many advantages.

In my case, I live in a country where the local currency is a disaster. Having money in the local currency might be worth something today, but tomorrow it won't have the same value; it devalues too much.

The best thing for me, and I think for many others, would be to also have physical cash—in this case, dollars or euros. I see it as much more viable.

Normally, the emergency funds are not part of investment capital, it is supposed to separate money that is set aside to deal with other challenges issues that will arise to avoid tempering with your Bitcoin saving pending till your target price and time for your Bitcoin investment.

Even if you have a separate emergency fund, putting all your investment capital into Bitcoin still isn't a smart idea. Everything carries risk, and that risk doesn't just come from price volatility, but also from unexpected event or rare risk that you simply cant predict. Remember the Coldcard incident? That's an example of the risk that come with having no diversification.

Stablecoin wont save you from inflation because they're just digital asset pegged to fiat. As some people have already pointed out, they're a lot riskier than simply keeping your money in cash or a bank.

You are right, I will also not advice anyone to sell his property when he can sell some of his Bitcoin to solve his problem or issue, when you are investing in Bitcoin and you have an emergency that your emergency funds cannot solve or handle there's nothing wrong in selling some of your Bitcoin to settle that emergency.
Investment is meant to be used, when you have an investment and that investment can be used to solve or handle your emergency issue you need to use it.
As for me I will never sell my property when I have Bitcoin even though I have not accommodated or reached my target I will still sell some portion of the Bitcoin and use the money to solve any emergency I have especially when my emergency funds is already exhausted.

Emergency funds should be kept separate. Emergency funds and Bitcoin investments are definitely different, Bitcoin investments should be held for the long term, but emergency funds will be needed at any time, and if you depend on your investments in that emergency, then it can be a loss for you. And besides, emergency funds should be kept in a state of easy access, in this case, if you have to sell something and then get that emergency fund, then it is a different and extra problem.

Such We usually like to maintain the fund for emergencies in money to ensure it is easier to get in an emergency, and I will not keep it in a bank; instead, I will store it in my home locker, which is the most convenient. But the most important thing is to keep emergency funds separated, and when it comes to investing, invest money that you're able comfortably retain.

Before investing, always have all your things on a good level and then start investing because this works better and also gives good profit. Never rely on this for any emergency, it never works in these cases.
Investment use to do with decision and determination,  you can decide to invest with half of what you realize as a daily income..That's why i said for someone who goes into investment, the investor have already watched it's back, they're people who do wait to have discretionary income or as it may implies" emergency income " before they can invest...so you must not wait to have excess funds before you invest...

Money meant to solve emergency situations shouldn't be put into an investment, it should be in an account of it's own since it's meant to solve emergency situations and one thing about emergency situations is that it can happen at anytime even when you least expect so what's the need of putting money for such situations into an investment that's for long term.

The emergency fund can only help out if someone lose a job and wants to sustain the investment for a while before getting a new job, if you think about it, it's still not advisable cause what if the person takes very longer than expected to get a new job, before that period different emergency situations must have occurred and money would be needed to solve them.

:://:::

I think the title of this thread and the context don't quite align—or perhaps you mean that saving in Bitcoin gives you access to funds in an emergency, since the long-term perspective allows you to generate additional gains relative to your fiat currency. Anyway, I believe that before considering any strategy, one needs to understand how Bitcoin behaves over the long term and base one's approach on that, rather than just throwing out random percentage figures.

Indeed, by keeping money in the bank, we will certainly be affected by inflation, and if you think about it, it will certainly cause us losses because the value of money decreases over time. This is certainly different from BTC, which has the potential to be profitable and will not be affected by inflation as long as we hold BTC for the long term. However, in this case, the decision is yours whether to put all your emergency fund money in BTC or not, as you will certainly bear the risk yourself.

However, I prefer not to put all my emergency fund money in BTC but rather to divide it up, such as in a bank savings account, some in gold, and some in BTC. In my opinion, although BTC is a good asset, we must still be careful because keeping money in BTC also carries risks. However, in this case, everyone has different methods and techniques for managing their emergency funds.

I was just a student back then, putting everything in, and it didn't really matter since I was earning. Because of the volatility through the years of cycles, I learned the hard way, losing a lot because when there was an emergency, or I needed money, I would easily sell my Bitcoin because I needed the money, and I didn't really have bank savings yet for any spending; all my money was just in my custodial wallet back in the day. I fixed my finances and put in a safety net. I realized the importance of having a safety net, investing in the right order, having emergency funds, having health funds, etc.

With that, inflation is just going out of hand; our local currency Dollars is already at 62pesos, increasing its value exchange through out the years, now im already thinking of putting everything on Bitcoin because it is just the same thing, I would lose money because of inflation, I mean in Bitcoin you would probably lose as well, but at the same time you might get profit long term, Emergency fund was not really something that you are going to use everytime, In my experience It wouldn't really going to get touch for months or year, similar to just saving long term, so maybe it is just better to be put on Bitcoin since it was a long term savings as well.
Using Bitcoin as an emergency fund is a great strategy. I have done this myself when I was in a position to do so, and I really benefited from how easy it was to sell my Bitcoin whenever I needed the cash.

As we know, Bitcoin can serve as a form of savings, whether for the long term or specifically for emergencies. If you ever find yourself forced to sell your holdings, you won't face any hassle doing so, given the high demand for Bitcoin. Furthermore, the appreciation in Bitcoin's price can significantly boost the value of your savings. So, I think there is no harm in using Bitcoin for emergency funds, especially if the assets can be held for the long term (which offers the potential for profit).

By the way, I have also thought about how people in the past treated Bitcoin as a sort of emergency fund, sometimes even nearly forgetting about it; but then, when the price skyrocketed, it effectively turned into an investment for them. So, wouldn't you agree that Bitcoin can be incredibly helpful for meeting various financial needs ? (even turning an emergency fund into a fund that helps unexpectedly)

Snip

What do you think? If you are going to diversify, what's your strategy?
-100% Savings/Cash
-80.20 Savings/Cash or Bitcoin
-50.50 Savings/Cash or Bitcoin
-Larger part in Bitcoin

Local topic Link
At the moment, I'm only investing in Bitcoin using funds that I truly won't be using for anything else. So, basically, I don't have a definite estimate of how much money I'll save in the bank or in Bitcoin. That's all determined after my monthly expenses have been covered. Only then can I invest the remainder in Bitcoin, and some in a bank savings account for an emergency fund.

So, basically, I'm not the type of person who plans things like this from the moment I receive my salary. But yes, if I had to choose between the three options you gave, I think I'd probably choose number three. I think keeping 50 percent of my wealth in Bitcoin makes sense. But this is just a guess, because I haven't done that kind of calculation with Bitcoin. If I were to calculate all my assets right now, I'd say only 20 to 25 percent is in Bitcoin.

The main difference I see between an emergency fund and long term savings is that the former is important to have and the latter is important to do. The idea of an emergency fund should not be to generate the highest possible return. But to have money available should you need it. Regardless of market activity. There is nothing more convenient than selling bitcoin fast. But that doesn't mean it is equally liquid in reality as bitcoin's price could drop by 30% just when the crisis comes. I'd rather have a larger stockpile of cash for a few months of necessary living expenses, so that I can invest what I don't need in bitcoin. This way, I'm not going to be forced into selling Bitcoin at an inappropriate time.

Everyone has their own way of managing and allocating their money. However,  using Bitcoin or gold as an emergency fund would go against some basic financial principles.

Inflation does make our money lose value, but it's not gonna drop by 30-50% in a short period of time. Meanwhile, an emergency can happen at any time, even right after we go allin on Bitcoin.

Therefore, don't get too obsessed with inflation and forget what an emergency fund is actually for. This money should be kept stable and easily accessible, not for chasing gains.

Emergency funds should always be available in cash. Why? Because cash is highly-liquid, allowing you to quickly spend it on daily necessities. Not like Bitcoin which is volatile. It can't be used at every merchant or business you can imagine.

The OP should change the topic from "using Bitcoin as emergency funds?" to "using Bitcoin as an inflation hedge?". It makes more sense. Because Bitcoin helps protect you against the negative effects from inflation over the long term. It gives you greater purchasing power over time. But for immediate spending or offline use? Cash is the undisputable "King". The choice is yours.

If you think about it, your explanation makes sense. Emergencies can happen at any time. If, for example, we store emergency funds in BTC or gold, there are two possibilities: profit or loss. If, for example, the price of BTC or gold rises, we profit. But if the price of gold or BTC falls, we will lose. So, using a strategy like yours is certainly safer because it can be used immediately when needed, and it's certainly more practical.

However, for some reason, I prefer to divide my emergency fund into three parts: the money in the bank, the money in gold, and the money in BTC. If, for example, I want to use my emergency fund and the price of gold or BTC falls and the emergency fund in the bank runs out, I will temporarily use my personal savings. Later, when the price of gold and BTC has risen, I will sell it and transfer the funds to my personal savings.  Smiley

An emergency means that you will need funds at any time, such as a natural disaster or an emergency medical care. You may need money in a situation where there may be internet and power outages in your area due to natural causes. If you have funds in any other form than cash, you may not be able to solve the emergency.

Experienced investors for long term Bitcoin investments recommend using discretionary income and keeping cash flow available, and another important recommendation is to have an emergency fund. In fact, Op made headlines for holding Bitcoin as an emergency fund, but his plan is not correct. The emergency fund must be in cash because the emergency need is uncertain but happen not impossible.

We are supposed to understand that emergency funds are not your investment money, even though I'm not sure why you would be. The reason you should have emergency funds is that you want to hold them for a long time, so you won't need to take them out for play. I agree with you that they should be kept in a secure location, but they should also be accessible because it wouldn't be worth the stress if they weren't. And I hope people should stop seen Bitcoin as an emergency funds and it is better to even keep fiat as an emergency funds rather than. Bitcoin.

Quote
Such We usually like to maintain the fund for emergencies in money to ensure it is easier to get in an emergency, and I will not keep it in a bank; instead, I will store it in my home locker, which is the most convenient. But the most important thing is to keep emergency funds separated, and when it comes to investing, invest money that you're able comfortably retain.

Because having emergency funds is one of the best ways to make things even better for us. Normally, we should understand that they need to be kept separate from what we already have, but we can't really do that. Those who are still keeping the two together should take the necessary action by separating them because it's an error that needs to be fixed.
