3 BTC taken from Casascius coins

I have been following this story in reddit, Seeking blockchain tracing help — 3 BTC taken from Casascius coins on September 3, 2026. Not sure though why it was removed by the moderator.

Just want to share if for those who have their Casascius coins and wanted to sell them. In this case, the potential buyer, or shall we say the criminal, was able to steal and swept it from him.

The victim said that the criminals wanted to do a Facetime, and he peeled a quarter of the code, while covering the rest. But that could be his mistakes, as the criminals might have seen more to be able to steal it from him. You can also read it from here.

So let this just be a warning for everyone here, not to do what the victims have done in this case. Don't exposed any to the criminals. Another wake up call, criminals will make you do anything in the beginning without any hint, until it's too late.

The post was removed by the same person who posted it, not the moderator. Maybe the person later realized he might have shared a lot of sensitive information in the main post and decided to wipe it off, just, maybe. The warning message was "Sorry, this post was deleted by the person who originally posted it. "

I feel sorry for the victim. He said that was his only bitcoin and had all gone just like that because of what he considered to be a mistake from his end for being engaged in multiple things all at once which affected how he was thinking.

I don't know how distracted someone can be for them to review such sensitive information to someone on the other side of the screen, but the victim already figured out his mistake and learned from it and I hope others don't repeat it, playing with 3 bitcoin is not even funny at all.

They were probably trying to verify that the coin was real before buying it, but that was likely just another trick to steal from him. It makes no sense to share any part of the private code with anyone before you receive the payment.

His story should be a lesson for anyone planning to sell a Casascius coin. Once you start thinking about the different ways people can scam you online, you become more careful about the information you share.The safest option is to prove that the coin is genuine without exposing anything that could give someone access to the funds. Once any part of the private code is revealed, there's high chances the rest will not be difficult to find.. Many scammers don't force their victims. They simply convince them to do something that seems harmless until it's too late.

LOL no offense but that's just dumb. Peeling a quarter of that code already instantly made it worth way less. Like, who'd buy a semi-peeled coin? 3BTC's about a quarter mil... and they're facetiming it?? Idk how u can even sell that without a shitload of risks. Just peel it for urself & use the money, sell the peeled coin & live a happy (less risky) life

Also try to buy or get such thing from reputable people, or those that can hardly vanish with people's valuable, not necessarily because they are reputable but because it's very difficult to do so with or without consequences.
And remember to apply the Bitcoin trustless principles when necessary, so that before collecting a Casascius coin you are able to somhow verify and get enough assurance that the keys hasn't been compromised even without revealing it, afterall we are in crypto space where such thing can be easily developed by talanted people who can effectively communicate correctly in codes. One of the nicest ways they can solve the issues or vulnerabilities associated with Casascius coins is by further securing people's wallets or accounts with additional layer of security, so that the accounts would possibly require things like secret questions, hidden by ZKP on a Blockchain, to transfer fund. When you buy a Casascius coin from someone, it should become possible to replace the seller's secret question with your own without ever revealing the private keys

This is why it's not good to trust any random person online when you want to do some deals that involves huge amount like this, in this kind of deals, it's usually best to use a trusted escrow services and just pay the fees it will cost you to use their service instead of risking to lose your money the way he just lost 3 Bitcoin. I have been scammed like this on telegram and Facebook before, I paid for an item I liked and it was never delivered to me, the scammer even blocked me when he realized that he can't get another money from me anymore.

In this case, it's the fault of the victim and also a reminder for some of us to not trust anyone online because a scammer can still impersonate and you would think it's the real account owner that you are dealing with meanwhile the account has been hacked already and now being controlled by a scammer. We should be careful.

Small or big or huge amount, it's always risky to have deals with strangers online and it's very basic principle.

This mistake of the seller is similar to some stories with influencers and their livestreams when they mistakenly shown their wallet seed phrase during a livestream and very quickly someone imported those wallet seed phrase, move and steal the fund.

About this 3 BTC trade, I am not sure that the buyer intentionally tried to create pressure on the seller so that the buyer could expect possible mistake from the seller. Creating pressure during a trade is a very common scam method.

Man, this is really scary. Casascius coins are rare and if someone is definitely planning to steal one, it's not an opportunistic theft — they must have carefully studied the victim beforehand.

I was just amazed by how sneaky the trick was! They call victims on video and slowly lure them into revealing the code bit by bit. If you simply wish to verify authenticity, you need only verify the hologram or seal — you do not need to open up the private key. So when someone demands to see the code, even just a small part of it, it's already a huge red flag.

Totally agree with what you said at the end. That's exactly how it works — at first it looks completely normal, because scammers are really good at making it seem that way. The victim doesn't realize what's happening until it's already too late. Thank you for sharing this case, hopefully more and more people will be aware of this type of scam.

Exactly, I was thinking the same thing. Even if someone with no mask on FaceTime tried to convince me to peel the hologram, I would never do it unless they paid the premium at least. The actual price of the coin could be paid later, but they have to pay the premium.

He made a mistake, and the whole thing looks very scripted. Maybe the reality is different from what is being told.

I would not even remove the screen protector or the back cover sheet I have applied on the smartphone if I had to even sell it, unless the buyer is not sure about everything else. I have faced this situation when buying and selling. They remove everything and later say they don't like the smartphone or that it is expensive, even if the whole thing is scratchless. And this dude here did something that an idiot person does. We should never deal when we are being greedy. That's an indication to step back.

The victim was too stupid to open a quarter of the hologram sticker on the coin? He admitted his mistake, now we know just a little careless then the asset can just disappear without us realizing that it would be a disaster.
I have never had a direct BTC funded physical coin, this is supposed to be collectible but we know on forums have been trading these collectible coins a lot.

I have said in a post a time or two, not sure if Theymos saw it..but I would love it if he would / could consider creating a bot that anytime a physical bitcoin term was typed , the bot said something like “to learn more about physical BTCs, check out btalk collectibles section (the birthplace of physical BTCs (BitBills- first ever, b4 paper wallets, hardware wallets etc ) ).  I see too much misinformation, non-knowledgeable people / replies on Reddit and it would do a lot of good ..1) potential to save millions in scams 2) education by real experts 3) potentially helping building up btalk community.

IMO r/bitcoin fn sucks. Absolutely nothing to do w Theymos moderation of it, just the users tend to be less knowledgeable, conversational lacking depth, more hate speak etc.

There is no notification bot in this forum in general, so it's not possible that theymos will set up any notification bot for only Collectible child board.

I can see his point, since it is a more generic warning and not necessarily, 100%, about collectibles themselves. It's more about a seller doing something dumb. Since the post is gone on both subreddits, I don't have a strong opinion on where it belongs.

I would gladly set this up for the r/CryptoCollectibles subreddit but unfortunately, “bitcointalk.org” has made itself onto the universal Wiki Blacklisted addresses that Reddit uses, since the address was spammed on Reddit years ago when people were trying to pump crypto. Anytime someone posts the URL on the sub, Reddit just instantly shadow bans the post/comment.

Weird addition to this, lengthy but shortened best i could. I think this is the same person from ebay in Saudi Arabia. That coin was swept on the 2nd. Days later the swept coin was for sale with make an offer. I sent a few hundred dollar offer, not realizing ad was for 3 of them. Offer declined as I figured it would be anyhow, but then I get a reply on an earlier message I sent asking what would the carcass go for. He replied all 3 for 6500. I said thank you out of my league sorry. He says we're all in same league. I said i wish I felt that way but appreciate the sentiment nonetheless and congrats on holding. He asked if i collect them or why am I looking for one. I said collector yes but dont have any casascius. He says he'd prefer to sell to someone that likes them even if means losing few hundred, would refuse 7k from someone not knowing what theyre buying. Then asked my income (just estimate dont specify) and age. Then proceeds to tell me he got scammed into showing someone part of the holograms and lost 380k. Told him hate to read that, made my heart drop. Says was going to put into a house but maybe God has better plans, making peace with it if its God that keeps him going.. I was saying thats horrible maybe he could find someone to track the coins. He replies so what's your offer, lowball me. I said no I dont want to even do that and I hope he gets top dollar for them and his btc back somehow, asked to see if he checked if theif pulled pre forks. He says no it just happened on the 3rd the harder life gets the more humble we get and time should be spent for peace and doing something larger than us. Then says offer me 30 usd please. Won't sell to anyone else til you make that offer so il wait and decline all other offers. I said I couldnt do that, that wouldnt even cover the silver in them and I want him to get top dollar, not for me to be a cause for more loss. He says no man, this is how il feel good about this honestly. It'll be more incentive to let go to the right person and that wed both have a good story to tell with them. Briefly told him about the lot I got of stolen coins and that the victim was nice and sent me a couple back, but I dont want to be the collector of others misfortunes. He says this isnt a misfortune God brings blessings in the form of misfortunes. And he sees them as trials so please let him have his thing, maybe someday il understand the mindset and nudges me to make the offer again. I sent he accepted and sent that he'd ship DHL when he woke up congratulations and blessings to me. Told him I promise I wont sell it. He says keep 1 sell 2 thats what id do. Asked for my number for shipping, then he found it in customer details said he hasnt sold anything in awhile. Next day sends that he made a mistake it was 2 gilt and 2 brass he'd send all 4. No problem. Next day sends me update that they wouldnt ship from Saudi not DHL nor FedEx so he sent with a friend to ship from Dubai. I asked if they said why, said they didnt specify but thinks they classified as currency when he said collectable/trading cards. 5 more days pass and I ask any update? Apologized and feels bad but theyre with his friend who's figuring out shipping them from Bahrain because he was worried about traveling to Dubai with them. Im just left confused as shit all around, the ebay account is 21 years old. They guy showed the original purchase of the coins to same account. I mean parts scream scam here too but why wouldnt he just take the few hundred to begin with if thats the case? Boy was i excited for a little bit there. Ebay still hasnt even helped me with the stolen storage locker coins so thisl be fun.. I guess il hold onto hope for a few more days..
