‎I don't know if I expressed myself clearly,  but the question I just wanted to ask is this; is it a good practice to register and own a business in your real name mostly when you know others both good and bad can make reference to the name, or it is not adviced to do so because it could destroy your reputation Incase something bad happens?

Registering a business in your real name has its merits and demerits but the later seems to outweigh the former. If the individual has already built high reputation around his name, that will be a huge plus for the business because people will be confident to transact with them because if the name involved. The danger with this is that if someone bearing similar names happens to commit any offense, it might affect the company easily. In addition, if the company will be sell shares to others and be own partly by the public, it is better to retain a neutral name. Finally, not using personal name is good in the aspect that it protect the individual incase the company declares bankruptcy.

It can really be a bad idea to keep your name on something that's being used by a third party; in that case, the correct thing to do is to transfer the bills to the tenant's name. As a business owner with consideration of business practice and law regulation on my country, i will suggest separation between personal name and business name. I need to separate between my personal asset with legal liability so there are need legal entity separation. Individual business has high risk, if business goes bankrupt or faces a lawsuit or claim from a third party, the owner's personal assets may be seized to settle business debts. If company face financial difficulties or legal claim, liability is limited to company own assets anf owners and shareholder assets legally protected and save.

Using company name for everything related to business matter part of reputation and privacy shield, as op explained, if there any legal issue involving tenant wil only impact company name and real owner can protect personal and family reputation. My last consideration be honest and put everything on its place because everything can be formally verified. in some situation when we caught on problem we will not be panic because we are on right way in the eye of law.

I think this is a personal decision and nobody wishes for their business to end up with a bad reputation. It is a good thing if someone decides to use his/her name and it is also a good thing if you decide to use other name. But you should know that even if you use other name that is not yours and the company ends up with a bad reputation and close down, when they want to get back to business again with that same name, it will also not be something good.

I think there is no problem in using own name. If someone rents an apartment, then he must use the address of the house and even the name of the owner of the house. This has to be done for various purposes. If someone uses it for good, he still has to use it and if bad, he still has to use. In this case, the reputation or bad name of the owner of the house is not a big issue. Because the one who commits a crime is a criminal and he has to be punished for it. The owner of the house has no responsibility that any miscreant will commit a crime and the owner of the house has to take responsibility for it. Everyone has his own identity card. If he commits a crime, the detectors will catch him for it. There is no restriction on registering or using your own name in your own business.

If his name is XXX, maybe I can take his name if he doesn't hold the trademark. Someone else can get it and do business in his name, and that would be legal. So a trademark is important, and I would suggest everyone build a company instead of running everything in your own name.

But it only applies when you are starting newly. If you have already made your name in the market, then changing now can cause huge losses in the business, so don't make this mistake.

If you started a business in your own name, it will be hard for you to start over and sell the trademark again. In my country, landlords have their houses registered in their names and I don't think there's any issue with that. Those who live there also use utility bills and all what not from said properties registered in the landlords' names for their own personal registration and submission of KYC documentation. It's a standard procedure here in my country. The worst any site one is registering on can do is ask for affidavits to indicate one actually lives on that said property one has listed as address.

On the other hand, if it were a business, I won't encourage anyone to use their real name as their business name. It's for security reasons. You've to register it as a company with its own entity.

I am still renting an apartment and the account holder is obviously the tenant's name. That's his business so definitely everything will be named on him. Paying the bill which is on the other person's name isn't the problem, the problem is if you don't pay the bill, like electric or water bill, you will never be comfortable on living there.

However, on the idea of ruining the reputation if you put your name as business owner, I don't think it scares the business owners. They spend their life savings on their business so obviously, they will take all the legal actions to make that business named on them, not on the strangers around.

That could be two sides as you own a business and will have commitment to gives a good service to your clients, that can build your reputation and vice versa. Maybe not many businessman use their own name as a brand so public know that the business gives good services.

Naming the street with your name will not be a problem but you need to ask to your environment whether they allow you use your name or not unless you build that street from beginning and all people in the environment asking your permission to live there.

True, If the true owner of the business have a good faith on the business and has the grit to grind and improve it to success, I don't see any reason to name it to other person. It is a different scenario if the true owner have something malicious that he want to hide his name from the public and avoid records of him.

To be honest, having a business doesn't mean it can ruin your record or reputation to the extent of no repair. It is common for businesses to fail and there are many business owners who tried several businesses before they got the right business for them that is sustainable and has a future. Banks and institution know this and as long as you pay your debt on a good faith, they will still lend you.

In business, the name of a business is very effective and plays an important role in marketing as KFC becomes a global brand and everyone knows this name and if someone starts a business with MFC, then many people are attracted to it because it's very similar to KFC, so branding with a name in business is very important. Here the question is, does the use of your own name in business have any benefits? The answer is very simple, sometimes it's very productive, but along with it, it has many drawbacks, like the individuals who know you in the majority of cases prefer your products, so in this case, your name works as your ad.

When your business grows, then you need more investors to reach your business at global level then actual problem you may face that's the investors don't like to invest in that business in which individuals original name involves so finding of investors becomes difficult. Running a business and building a house for leasing are two different things. A landlord will have to provide every document in his name and as such his tenants will also use same name why applying for anything that will require their address just as you made mention of utility bills. In a business settings, it is not good to use one's real name even though the registration documents will have to bear the real names of the business owner. The risks associated with using a real name as your business is that if the business falls into legal violation, your personal name can easily be included during legal actions. If you also own many businesses in your real name it then means that if one of them faces bad reviews, it will affect all your other businesses and this is the reason why some business owners use different business names for all their businesses.

I'm not sure if OP has worked with people and how brand for business work. You can't just include names because somebody is nice to you because you think they have reputation unless the person is a family member but even family member to change towards their blood. The person that build reputation did some things to make that name, if you are building a business, build your name from scratch so that people does not get to drag you in the mud later.

There are ways you can make your name even better and make it more appealing to ears than do it because of another person reputation. What if the person you even think have reputation isn't what he is and one day the reputation you thill it's good suddenly become the opposite. Whether you like it or not, you have exposed your business to the side you never expected.

I have seen many businesses that are being impersonated on the Internet. It is just unfortunate that you can't stop scammers or evil doers from impersonation. This is not even about having your business in your real name but should should know that before you register a business name you will also have to submit some identification documents that will contain your real name which means that if someone uses your business name to defraud people, it can still be tracked back to you during investigation about your business.

Yes, it can be good for security reasons to register with different name or brand name you design for yourself so that everyone will recognize you with that same band name always in all your businesses. Bot notwithstanding, it will not stop scammers from impersonating you since you will have business address which the OP was also concerned about; if he doesn’t own a company and have to rent a place for his business, that address will be part of you because it is the place they know your brand for, if something happen to that place, it might affect your brand especially if the place is tagged with negative things that can affect your business, that is why it is very important to use a good place to also have influence to your business. I am forced to ask because I'd like to know if it is a mistake that some business people have done before starting up companies in their families name. I think most people have a reason they choose to give their company certain names especially those who have an experience in business and for people who establish a company's name using their family's name I believe that their intention is for the business to be one that is generational one that can be pass down from one family member to another and even though this can also be done without giving the business your family name, the advantage your family name has owing a very successful business /company is very huge, just by owing that surname, your great grandchildren could have doors opened for them.

Some examples of these successful business named after family is Dangote group (Nigeria), Tata group (India), etc Any individual bearing that surname has recognition even if they are not directly related and it is because of business success.

It's the person that committed the crime that will mess up with his own reputation and not the landlord. Your house address doesn't mean that everybody in your compound is the same as you.

I don't see how using someone's name in reference benefits the person because if someone is bringing a gift to your house, he wouldn't say because your landlord name is in your address, he should go and give your landlord the gift that belongs to  you. However, you can use your name to register your business or not, it's a personal decision.
