I am not surprised out all to see most bettors in American who had placed sports bet did that to pay bills or mortgage because plenty of people in to sports bet believe they can make cool money from sports bet easily. I do not gamble to pay bills; i gamble for fun but if i won a bet and have a bill to pay and the money i won from sports bet can take care of the bill i will not mind using the money to pay off the bill. Winning in sports bet is not guarantee, so people who are hoping to win some money from sports bet to pay bills are lazy and they do not want to work.
Good points. But most gamblers don't see it from this perspective. Gambling is a game of fun which is based on luck and chance, where one may win. If one decides to pay their bills from the money they win in gambling through luck, there is nothing wrong with that and if they are satisfied with the win, they can walk away. But there are some gamblers whose mindset is to play for survival and they are never satisfied with any amount they win from it, as they will always want more. And this habit can lead to addiction because they think of it as a money-making machine instead of fun, and they may become dependent on gambling for income, and that can lead to problems.

Well, I think these statistics reveal how players view betting. It turns out that the majority of players bet to earn some extra money for their expenses, and honestly even in surveys where players claim they bet solely for entertainment, I think they’re being a bit disingenuous, because ultimately I believe their true goal is still to make some extra cash.

Many people this days don't gamble for the love of it as gambler has being made to appear beyond just making predictions bets but now an activity which people are venturing into for a possible revenue that could be used to offset certain bills. The survey isn't just true for Americans but even in my part of the world this is what a lot of people now do since their income source can't cover all their bills. In fact, I would be happy to have myself a huge win that can cut off my bill without it coming from my job.
They believe gambling can give them that big amount they desire because, in fact, there are some people who are so lucky to win a big amount that changed their lives as a result of luck. Because of this, people go into gambling expecting a day will come when they will be lucky enough to hit that big amount. They make mistakes in gambling by thinking everyone must have the same luck to win big. The luck in gambling can't be predicted; one can win a big amount, and one can win a small amount, but this luck is never certain. There is no need to dwell on it; it is just better for gamblers to gamble with the amount they can afford and not to expect too much that has already been buried in the mind.

I’ve never done anything like that myself, but I’ve had plenty of friends who have. They didn't do it for utility bills, but rather to pay off credit card debt. Since they didn't have enough money to cover the full balance, they tried to triple or quadruple their existing funds through betting—only to lose that money as well. This scenario played out at least two or three times. Each time, they told me they wished they had just made the minimum credit card payment instead of betting. I have never resorted to anything like that.

I know that such people exists and they are the type I call lazy, because that's what they are, they don't have anything going on in their lives, they prefer to sleep all around the clock doing nothing and when they finally wake up they choose gambling as their jobs.
This might be hard to believe for some certain people but I have seen it all, people have destroyed their life because of gambling, they relied on it like it's the only option they have left, and it's a lie, they just don't want to make money the hard way.
Guess what? None of the few I knew made it through gambling, it dragged them into bigger problems that they had to come out and confessed, begging for help because they are already addicted.

I always love to read and notice how any statistics and votes reveal completely different picture of a situation, that society or community try to show. For example half of those who were asked say openly they gamble for money, and 1/5 of gamblers gamble with goal to get big money. However, whenever same question is asked here on the forum, everyone say they gamble for fun. Something does not match here. Another surprising statistics is that so many gamble to earn money, when it is knows that it is hard to end with profit. Does it mean that still to many people are unaware that gambling should not be used to make money?

Because yeah situation is different in each community and maybe the surveyor make that on slum or depressed area. Still its sad that there are people think that way and that shows how desperate they are to earn money. Crazy that they decide to go in that option on which they are making risky bets for bills, if they just spend their time on other things and change their mindset. Maybe they realize that gambling is for fun and not truly reliable option to rely on.

In my early years of gambling, I saw it as a means of making money. In some cases, I budget for a need that will be sorted out if I win. I would have to confess that it was a frustrating experience since I lost most of the time. As I gained more experience, it became obvious that relying on gambling to pay bills was a big mistake. To answer the question asked by OP, I was part of the population in the past. Now I see gambling as an unstable terrain; hence, relying on it to pay bills is unwise.
I used to think that I was the only one that has exhibited this behavior during my early days of gambling but when I across different discussion apart from this one, that was related to this matter, I always see other gamblers too testifying to have done same thing. Sometimes I do have sleepless night because my mind is completely occupied with excitement of winning the bet and I will be planning what to do with the money as soon as I cashed out, the more I daydream about huge win and what to do with the money, the more I lose those bets and it kept killing my confidence until I realized that gambling is not a reliable means of income. Right now, even if I am in need of money that I don't have, I am never relying on gambling to get it.

After I read that survey, I found 2 interesting things:
1. You may think the same as me, the gambling industry keeps growing -> the number of gamblers is growing -> potentially more people who are gonna be in debt because of gambling. But based on that survey, the number of people who have debt because of gambling (sports betting) has declined from 30% to only 19% now.
2. I can say gambling, especially sports betting, is not as bad as it sounds and is described on the Internet, because based on that survey, there are 34% of people who say sports betting has a positive impact on their finances, and 50% say neutral, no positive/negative impact on their finances.

Of course, it's not that bad as compare to let's games slot games or any luck base out there. And we have seen sport bettors going into a massive parlay and win huge from small amount to thousands of dollars. But still, as the title says, it's going to be very hard to make it a habit to look at sports betting as means to pay bills. I don't know if there is anyone who can share their story to consistently winning on their bets and paying their bills with their win.

There is also an interesting clause in article saying that 34% of respondents are in profit, but half of all respondents are neither in loss or profit. How is it possible that only around 16% of sport bettors are in a loss? I think there was some mistakes in calculation. Gambling can not be that financially positive? Either respondents are one-time bettors, because on a distance variability of losing is high, or they were not giving honest answers.

You just hit the hammer on the nail and that is the faceless forum we find ourselves. There are people that will want to argue it to any length that they are not gambling for money, they are only gambling for fun and that reminds me of the old days when we often hide our feelings so we don't get caught unaware. Those that choose to gamble for the fun should not complain about their losses especially when it's becoming too frequent. They have to compose themselves and smile to the public even when they are not seeing their bankroll last longer than they expected. Nobody gamblers for fun, is eithr you want to make small profit and stay disciplined or you want to make the profit at once...a jackpot! Everyone needs to the profit to stay alive.

When I was short on money, I might bet a penny once, just for luck, but I was never willing to risk the money I needed for bills just to test my luck. I'm not sure that's a good idea. As for the statistics, I can mention that the questions may be specific enough to get the result the asker wants.

According to that article, in US people are ready to risk their last money in gambling when they need extra money, instead of finding other way to solve financial problem. In Europe people seems to be more conservative and will try either not get in such situation or to earn money by working. As for Asian region, I know they love gambling, but I dont know if they would gamble last money to multiply them.

I'm not from America but one thing that I know is a lot .. I mean a lot of people fall under this category. A lot of people may claim to gamble or bet for fun but in reality they need the money to pay for one thing or the other. I think majority (if not all) of the people from the lower economic class who bet do so to pay bills and I think it's general knowledge that the lower class are way more than those who are in the middle or upper class. And so even from my country, it's obvious that people bet to pay for one thing otlr the other. It is also the reason why emotions tend to st in so quickly when the game doesn't go according to what they want. They know their money is gone and they potential profit to be used is also gone

Based on the recent US survey More than half of U.S. sports bettors surveyed in 2026 said they had placed wagers in an effort to pay household bills, highlighting the connection between sports betting and personal finances among some participants.
The survey covered 1,200 Americans who had placed a sports bet during the previous year. Researchers conducted it between August 31 and September 3. Among respondents, 51% said they had wagered hoping to cover bills, while 21% reported betting to help pay rent or a mortgage. So if you combine the 51% and 21%, these bettors bet hoping to win money to pay bills or mortgage. Here we see the lie that most gamblers will tell to themselves - that they can make money, maybe even a living from placing bets but never really analyzing or accepting the fact that they actually lose much more over the long term than they win. They may always shout up about the big wins they've had, but conveniently ignore the many other small losses that tip the overall balance away from them. In these 20-50% of gamblers minds we see a clear contradiction, where they're actually spending a lot of money while pretending it's a method to pay bills. These casinos and sport books simply wouldn't stay in business (with all their major costs) unless they were very successful at taking money from the every gambler and there is nobody that will beat them over the long term.

Two things can happen when someone bet to pay bills which are losing and winning ( been lucky) but in actual sense it is very wrong for someone to bet their emotions and this paying of bills is an emotions and guess what will happen when you are betting under this kind of condition or state, whenever you lose the little you have while you are planning on doubling it to pay bills, one will be drive to go after the money they lost and the more someone keep doing this the more they will be losing it.

If anyone says that they are paying bills using gambling they are liars, many gamblers have tried to do it and they always fail, bills is even too fast, how about people who just want to make a lot of money from gambling to travel out of their country?
I know someone that did this, gambled all he has on a casino with the mentality that once he won money he will use that to travel out of the country, he lost everything and he later sold his house then use the money to travel.
It's not gambling that worked for him, he had to sold his house to get over there and I am very sure that he isn't happy about his first decision before selling his house.

So I would like to ask the sports betting community: are you part of the US surveys that bet to pay bills? Be honest, and if possible, state your country or region.
Before I place a bet, I will make sure that the money to pay bills and any installments that are my obligations are covered first. So I do not bet for such things. The goal is indeed the same, to win the bet. But the use of money from winnings, perhaps some people just say things related to their difficulty in paying installments. Because to be honest, I don’t really believe that there are people who truly rely on luck from betting to pay bills that definitely have to be paid every month.

So I would like to ask the sports betting community: are you part of the US surveys that bet to pay bills? Be honest, and if possible, state your country or region.
On my part, I will not lie. I bet on sports, hoping to pay my bills. I'm from Asia, and many times my bets saved me from missing paying my bills.
I am not included in this survey. I definitely bet in hopes of a good profit, but I never expect big wins because it depends on luck, and it seems exceptional to me for a very small number of people. Since I do a physical job, if there is anything left after covering monthly expenses from my salary, I deposit that into gambling, I feel comfortable betting in a very relaxed mode, I have no target that I am betting to pay my household bills, or I am not betting just to pay off the home loan, I never have the expectation that I will be able to make a profit, because sports betting is also very risky, there is no guarantee of profit here, yet many people hope for big profits from gambling, and try to improve their financial condition.
