I have a friend of mine who used to invest in BTC in 2016. He was using very low end device on that time , and succeeded to make money through the investment. But now he still invest in markets but he forgot the password of that mobile he used to use in 2016. He tried to recover it but everyone around him told him that we can recover the mobile but not the data.

If anyone know anything that could help him, don't forget to share it with us.

He still have that mobile with him but he isn't able to open it.

First of all, did you friend use a cryptocurrency exchange app or something? Or was it a personal wallet? Which app did he use?

Because if it is a cryptoexchange then he can get his account back from the service provider but if it was a non-custodial wallet app, he could recover his wallet with either the seed phrase or the password. Did he write the seed phrase down somewhere?

If the phone was damaged and could only be repaired to full function if the data was lost, it would have being a better option that he backs up his data before doing that. And if he forgot the password to his wallet, there should be an option for "forgotten password " and that would need some specific information for retrieval.
For your clearness, the first issue he is having is that the phone is damaged. Secondly he forgot his passwords which ain't a big deal cuz he have saved everything in his notepad of a Gmail. Third his Gmail password is also noted in that phone unfortunately and he tried much to recover but was failed. Smiley

The things you said are not problem to a technician. Your only problem is the device that refused to power on. If you can on it, even without knowing the password, that phone can be decrypted and it will open. You just have to make sure it's work first. Some people say you should find a replacement to what's is damage, the only thing that can make you give up on a phone is when the board is completely damage, if it's working the thing you complain can be replace.

You just need to look for an engineer that knows how to fix phone, give them small money and you will have your phone. Don't even tell them you have something important there unless maybe this is another stories that never occurred. If your friend have some Bitcoin in there and it's worth more than the struggle he will go through, he will do anything to open that phone.

He did tried a lot , searched a lot but the only words he heard were that if you want to open this phone ur data including every single item will be removed. He got to many engineers but was all in wain. And also he have a huge amount of coins in there along with some bitcoins but luck is not on his side. He told me that only for this phone I will go to another country to find someone that can help him.

This is a very touching story, knowing that you have assets but cannot get access to it is very deverstating, I know that if you forget the password of your device you'd have to flash your phone as we call it in our locality and once you do that you will wipe all the whole information that you stored in the device. If he can be able to use alternative means to open his phone it means that another person can also do the same and I don't think that devices are built to enable opening them without the created password by the user. If you have a Bitcoin wallet and you don't write down your seed phrase it means that you're taking the biggest risk about your Bitcoin because if anything happens to your wallet device your Bitcoin is lost forever.

Not properly securing your seed is the biggest mistake which many newcomers make because it's impossible to recover your lost Bitcoin, if you don’t have seed with you. This feature has its own advantage because if you have properly secured your seed and nobody has access to that than your Bitcoins are fully secured. I always write my seed on paper and store it at different locations.

Similar mistake has been made by friend of OP and there is very little chance that those Bitcoins can be recovered. This is another lesson for all of us that why securing our seed properly is important.

It starts with how people learn about Bitcoin, wallet types (custodial and self custodial), ability of recover a wallet from either wallet seed phrase or private key, then steps for doing that correctly. If people don't learn about these things basically enough before their beginnings, they will very possibly use custodial wallets that give them easier creation, and no responsibility of taking care their wallets and wallet backups.

No risk free, so using custodial wallets like exchanges, casinos, merchant stores, they will have risk of losing their coins anytime. It's not a pure warning from technical knowledge but it is based on many severe loss cases.

Reminder: do not keep your money in online accounts.
Events made you scare about custodial wallets, centralized exchanges.

The more I read your story, the more extra details you keep adding.. Why not just explain it all at once? It feels like you're making things up because earlier you said the phone had a problem, now you're saying everything was noted in the Gmail notepad, and then the Gmail password was forgotten and that was also recorded in the phone's notepad.. This story is getting more ridiculous, in my opinion. If you don't want to be bombarded with questions, you better not start making up stories.

How about the seed phrase? He did not backup the seed phrase somewhere like on paper?

One thing about phone password is that to brute force it is hard. After like 5 attempts, it may keep doubling the times needed to try another password.

He should backup the seed phrase on paper or on metal sheet like stainless steel or titanium next time.
He have his everything saved in that phone but the issue is that the device have some circuitry problem and the shopkeeper told him that we can't recover the phone while saving the data .
Although time has passed and he also doesn't know the password of that phone. He have saved every single detail in the notes on that phone.
This is quite painful no matter how small the investment is, he will be much happier that he tool the decision to invest in Bitcoin and will have a positive thing to say when it concers bitcoin. This should serve as a lesson to everyone who have vital information of there invest on there phoned, even when saving information on our devices, its good to know that the device won't be there for ever, so we should always have hard copy backups of the same information we have on our device.

I think one vital take away from this story is that wallet recovery should be first tested before an emergency happens, this is a practice I have made a habit, before using a particular wallet, I’d first test the recovery and imagine the worst possible scenario and how to handle it before it even happens. A lot of people create a wallet and even receive bitcoin there without even confirming that they can actually recover it successfully, which is a very dangerous thing for anyone to do.

The only idea that would back testing wallet recovery with your seeds before an emergency happens would be, to know if you had written the seeds correctly in the first place and in their right order too.
The good news is, in the process of creating a new wallet, they always make you do this. It’s standard procedure to input your seeds and in the correct order too.
Once it’s correct once, it’s always going to be correct except, you tried trans copying it to someplace else then, it would be advisable to try it.

Yes you’re right. But that notwithstanding, I still it’s standard security procedure to try recovering that wallet or attempt importing it on another device, you just never can tell where an error might come from, hence the need to double check and cross check everything rather than simply assuming that it’s correct and everything is accurate without proof checking everything again.

If we are looking for a secure means to have our Private key stored, then we should not consider using a centralized option as a viable alternative; also, avoid any cloud services or password saver/manager apps and websites, as they all still fall under centralized authority, and anything could lead to a compromise of the sensitive keys we are saving. Privacy is as important as getting a more advanced and secure means to store our keys.
