People in different places usually choose secondhand products instead of new ones. Tailoring it down to vehicle, between secondhand vehicles and new vehicles which one is mostly purchased yearly? Saving some money upfront can be a reason but aside that, what is the actually reason or financial logic, depreciation math or what?
When you see someone going for second-hand products, just know that the person may not be financially okay, because I see no reason to buy a second-hand product when there is a new one available. If you are asked to choose between second hand vehicles and new vehicles, which one do you think is purchased more? I would say new vehicles, because they are new and will eventually become secondhand vehicles before second-hand buyers purchase them. What you may be thinking is that a lot of people are purchasing secondhand vehicles, and that may be true, particularly in your location. However, in developing countries, second-hand vehicles are often in high demand. So, let us understand that one of the major reasons why people end up buying secondhand products is that they cannot afford new ones

The Data we get from local news, used vehicles are now rising soaring high, it can be said the majority of people prefer used cars rather than new ones, the reasons may be various, one of which is the low price with the quality of the car is still good.
Saving money can be a strong reason, we also see many showrooms that sell used cars to survive even though we know that new manufacturer cars continue to appear with good technology, actually this depends on the need whether you want a new one or a used one is more sufficient.
I don't think that the rising demand means that it is a better option compared to the new ones. People mostly choose these because of their lower prices but they also need a lot of maintenance there are hidden mechanical problems and there is also the possibility of expensive repairs. Sometimes money that people say they spend while buying used car is spent on fixing it. If someone buys new car, it comes with guarantee, has safety features and has better technology. A used car can be a good option for very limited period of time. It is good for someone who has limited budget but that is not an economical option in the longer run. The better decision is totally dependent on the condition of car, its maintenance history and how the buyer is planning to keep it and for how long he wishes to have it.

Take the iPhone 17 PM for example. A brand-new one costs $1,190, while one advertised as "99% likenew" goes for $1,100. I don't see any reason to go for the used one in this case. That's way too much to pay for a used phone given the risks.
edited out People buying used iPhones often focus on how much they can save upfront and forget about the repair costs that might come later. A battery replacement can set you back $100, a screen around $350, and the rear camera around $249 ...And with a phone that's over a year old and out of warranty, something can go wrong any time. Just one major repair bill could wipe out most of what you saved by buying used. Buying second hand might be cheaper upfront, but that does not mean you will save money in the long run. But a lot of people just don't get this. It would be better if, after fixing the phone, that cost would make the iPhone be good as new in a way. Most of them don't understand that an iPhone that has been fixed before having lose his value of lasting longer. One fix will bring about other things that will spoil sooner, and they will keep on spending more on fixing those things. Summing the total amount spent on fixing the iPhone is equivalent to an amount capable of purchasing a new one.

In the case of an iPhone you nailed this point, but in the case of several other things you can still repair them and they will serve you for a very long time, you just have to pick which to repair and which to replace. There are some things that I can never spend my money on unless they are brand new, for example a water pumping machine, stabilisers or Stepdowns, you are risking spending more later if you get these appliances as used. Since the day I've prioritised buying brandnew products I have had less spoilt or weak products around, it's not everything we must buy when they are already used..

People buy secondhand for different reasons. Some wanna save $$ and some wanna dodge the depreciation hit or some just find a secondhand one that does job fine. Still, there is no denying affordability is one of the main reasons people go secondhand. But we can't assume someone is struggling financially just because they buy used. Knowing how to stretch dollar doesn't mean you have got no money to spend.

Basically, those who have less money do not always buy many new products with the aim of saving something for the future. Especially expensive mobile phones, expensive cars, all these things, those who are from middle-class families choose used things to fulfill their hobbies. If your financial position is good, then you will be able to fulfill your hobbies, then you will be able to buy new cars, motorcycles, expensive smartphones, and many other things. But when you have a financial crisis, you will look at your financial position to buy new things. At that time, you will have hobbies but will not be able to afford them. Basically, many people buy used things even with a small amount of money to fulfill their hobbies and they can also save their finances.

Using second hand things is not bad approach if it does not create any hygiene issue. It depends upon the items that you are prefer to buy, for example sometimes in most of the cases people used to sell their crockery or something that is in the use of patient who were severaly ill. After their demise family usually sold those items in second hand market. It may increase the chance of spreading germs, that should be avoided. But if it would be furniture, electric items or decorations items can purchase if their quality or condition is good.
Moreover i always in the favour of this market. Because it allows a person to start his own small scale business. We cannot ignore its functioning or its role in the economy,. Cost of investment can be minimized or it fulfill the demands of many people. So it is good to promote this as a business. Buying second hand products doesn't an indication of your poverty, but in this time of huge wave of inflation it helps to use income wisely.
How are you even supposed to know if that stuff belonged to someone seriously ill or someone who passed away? Huh? second hand market is nothing new. It exists in every country because there are always people looking to sell thing they no longer need and other looking to buy them for less. that said, I agree with your last point. just because someone buys secondhand does not mean they're poor or can't afford new things . people have different reasons for buying used.

Maybe depreciation calculations are one of the factors, when people take into account financial efficiency and also the function of used products that can be used optimally, of course people will avoid new products and will switch to used products such as vehicles. The current economy of society is far from expected, I mean the average employment in each country is low income and high expenditure, to save expenses and financial factors, or prices are much more affordable, many people prefer to use used vehicles rather than new ones, Some people think that owning and using a means of transportation at a pocket-friendly value is already the best thing in their life, What's more, nowadays vehicles such as used cars can be found at low prices with specifications equipped with advanced features, of course they will be seen as a much higher chassis caste that is no less competitive with new products.

It's true that not everyone that buys secondhand products are poor, some people might just have the believe of buying what have been tested and used by another person to lessen the price. I also have a friend that Prefered to buy what have been used than buying new product, in his words: it's like cheating me whenever I buy anything new because a secondhand products can served me just as the new ones. It's not as if he is poor though but I don't just know why he prefers secondhand products than new ones, all of his appliances and device he has been using are all secondhand products, except some that were not available at the time he bought the rest. That might be his words but I never believe in what he said because, I have been always buying new devices from my phone to my system and other devices, and for the first time I bought a secondhand system, it disappointed me almost immediately after I bought it, it happens that it has been having fault and the person sold it to me without me noticing on time. It also surprises me how someone will be capable of buying a new product and prefer to buy secondhand, it's greediness to me to see someone exhibit such act, and don't think I will ever buy a secondhand product on less am not capable of buying new one.

There are several reasons for buying second hand items which choice is one of them. I know that some people will be like, why buy secondhand when there are new ones in the market. Sometimes, the quality differs especially for products that have been purchased more than a decade ago, the new products don’t usually have the same quality as the older ones; I know this is still poor people mentality, but the bigger brands do the best qualities while if you can’t afford them, you can try second hand which most times last than the new brands new products sometimes. Some people buy secondhand vehicles because they can’t afford the new ones, this is common among several people including my country, we buy foreign used cars more often than the new cars, only the rich people’s buy new once’s. Furthermore, if we can say the truth, most of rich people don’t buy secondhand products, only the average and the poor ones are buying secondhand, this is not because of mentality but to also afford what we can at our bigger since there is in the market.

But in this case what comes to my mind is that if I am rich, why can't I go for new thing. I will use myself as an example I don't like used products or anything second hand item, what pushes me there is because I cannot afford new one and that is why I choose to go to that direction. The country where I comes from people normally choose second hand to replace new one just because there are people in our country that are producing the same thing but it does not have much quality as the original ones, and instead of going for that original one they decided to go for the fairly used one just because of finance. So money is always the problem sometimes, but most at times people go for secondhand products for some reasons.

There is no way second-hand products are stronger and more durable than brand new ones.
Most definitely, when we talk about durability there is no way a second hand item is more durable than a brand new one but when we talk about some products most people buy the fairly used ones because Inspite of the fact that they aren't exactly new products they are still durable, in such cases some people see no need in buying a new one if they can get the one that's fairly used not because they can't afford it. People purchase secondhand products for the price not durability. It is the same reason why people buy dupes instead of designer perfumes or buy knock-offs instead of designer clothes.
As I said intially, this isn't the same for every item, some people decide to buy second hand items because they don't really see any point in buying new ones. But when buying things like cars it's quite different, people buy the ones that are fairly used because of the price and not durability.

I think the opposite may be true for those who live a luxurious life. I think they are more attracted to new things when they launch new things in the market instead of using second-hand things, even though they already have products in good condition. And yes, those who have low income but things are very important for their lives are the ones who want to use second-hand things even if they want to save money. But yes, if second-hand things are available in good condition and at a reasonable price according to demand, then using second-hand things is not a bad thing at all.

People choose that for various reasons. One I think is that people feel what others have use seems to have less problems that when it is brand new. For example, there are some vehicles that have factory fault. If you bought that thing overseas, It will cost you to return that thing for repairs if they don't have a primary place at a closer location to yours.
I think others is to save money. They can't afford it at the original price so they sought out second hands stuffs. Little did they know that maintenance cost is also there. But it's not for all the products that needs that constant maintenance.

It is a very individual choice and we will never find answer that suits everyone about why people buy second hand products. Each purchase is individual. There are some products that I can afford to buy new, but I dont see reason why I should do that if used item works the same as new. Some items I buy used because I dont plan to used them for long or more than 1-2 times. Something I can buy new, but it will hit my budget or will be above expected to spend amount. Some items just have left the shop, never used, but technically they are “not new” anymore.

Since needs are never-ending and people constantly desire to acquire new things, saving money is a necessity. This is a natural part of life, and setting aside funds is essential to be able to make such purchases. One way to save is by buying second-hand items, which typically come with a lower price tag. Another advantage of second-hand goods is that they have already been tested; even brand-new products can turn out to be defective, and paying a high price for them is no guarantee that they will be free of issues. I should also add that, in some cases, it may be more advantageous to purchase items brand-new—meaning that choosing second-hand is not always the better option.

There are many reasons especially financial pressure and the higher costs of living encourage people to buy used product so that they could save some money. Someone has to buy a new product before it can become secondhand but nowadays people purchasing secondhand product more frequently especially for vehicle as op mentioned.
Not every secondhand products are bad cause sometimes a fresh used item is more affordable and really value for money. Sometimes people buy used product so that they wanna use it for temporary. But we need to check the product's quality and careful about repair cost before making any purchasing decision to avoid extra unnecessary expenses

Why would I even prefer a secondhand phone over new phone? I kind find it weird how some people feel comfortable using something that has been used by someone before. It’s kind of risky to buy a secondhand phone, vehicle are even better because you can be lucky with maintained one, but buying a used phone meaning putting yourself in danger because you don’t know what they have used the phone to do, whether scamming people or any other kind of bad activities. I’ve seen many people who prefer secondhand clothes over new clothes. I don’t how comfortable some people feel wearing a clothes that have been used before, they had no idea how many times the clothes were worn before, yet they can still wear them. To be honest, I’m someone who wears new stuffs, because what is the point of having the money for new things. I agree with you, it kind of greediness, otherwise I don’t see why someone would ever prefer secondhand clothes over new ones.
