I think gambling should be fun, but when a mother from a poor or low middle class home want to take Bitcoin as a source of income it is easy to become addicted and be at a loss. What that should be fun, recreational is being abused with costly effects.
While the South African government looks into regulations they should also touch on players gambling responsibly and importantly no under age gambling.
Same as what's happening in our country, the Philippines, gambling is really out of control because it's easy access unlike before that even if there were casinos around, ordinary people are not going into this places. But's totally different because of easy access to online and off shore gambling sites that our government has allowed. Now, it's totally out of control and our country in in chaose because of gambling. And many crimes have been committed because there are so many gambling addicts.

From this NEWS there is an online gambling pandemic in South Africa and it is as bad as you can imagine. Due to this raging pandemic South Africans are calling for better regulations to online gambling, South Africans are complaining of being addicted to online gambling and it is affecting them. Watching the video and listening to the first woman it is clear that she gamblers irresponsibly, doesn't have any control of her emotions and I wonder if she does this in the right frame of mind. I like how they all scream out to the government, maybe there is another reason why they are even losing as birds of the same feather, since it's south Africa the casinos operating over there mighty not be licensed or even not provably fair. It's very easy to be a gambling addict in a developing country than other countries because lack of jobs and worse economy affects developing countries even more, gambling can be a way to survive. Mind you, there is level to everything we got exposed to, there are first time, second time and third, there is enough time to have stop before it becomes out of control.

Due to this raging pandemic South Africans are calling for better regulations to online gambling, South Africans are complaining of being addicted to online gambling and it is affecting them. I was quite shocked by this. That woman lost a lot of money and she really seemed to be an addict. Because she thought that winning would come on the next bet. But I see that in the past few years, South Africa has become a very developing country in online gambling. Just look at the current data: Africa has become the largest country. South Africa leads in first place with 32.3%, followed by Norway at 31.2% and Greece at 25.8%. Creating regulations is very good. The African government seems to need to provide filters on online gambling sites. They must implement KYC to give age restrictions. But I understand the gambling world, no matter how hard the government tries, there are always weaknesses that can be exploited by irresponsible gamblers. So the main control of addiction is within oneself, family, and those close. If already addicted, then they need a psychiatrist. Source: https://www.visualcapitalist.com/online-gambling-by-country/

I against underage gambling, but anyone that is above 18 should not be greedy and not think of making money from gambling. Some people think they can make money from gambling is the reason they are addicted to gambling. Just like the woman on the YouTube video that you posted. There are several news of gambling addiction online. In anything you want to make money from, research about it. Obviously, you will know what she will see online if she searched for making money through gambling.

One of the reasons this happens is because of poverty. I also heard the unemployment rate there is high. Is it true? Sometimes, their current economic situation affects how they treat gambling. Because of poverty, they are pinning their hopes on gambling, dreaming that it can change their lives once they win.
Has their government announced any plans to curb the situation, or nothing at all, like in our country, because they are raking in huge tax revenues from them? Execution of the plan may take a long time, but if there's not even a plan, it means it's not their priority or they don't care at all.
If that's the case, whether you like it or not, you have to deal with it on your own. Addicted gamblers there either have to control their urge to gamble or risk making their situation even worse. Don't wait for government action if you see they don't have a sense of urgency.

You can become addicted to love, to food, to car, to absolutely everything. I don't understand why there should be more regulations when we are all adults and we make our own choices? If someone struggles, don't get me wrong but it's really their own problem and they have to work on themselves. Some people are lazy and don't want to work, so what are we gonna do? Set regulations on laziness? There is also no point in setting a regulation and it will only harm the country because there are VPNs and there are other online gambling websites from different countries. If you restrict people from gambling, they'll gamble on other websites and actually, money will leave your country and make another country richer.

Why is it that everything that goes on in a human life they want the government to step in and do something about it even personal things they still want the government to step in and do something, if you are addicted to gambling what do you want the government to do, the best thing you can do for yourself is to go for counseling maybe you will find help there, the government cannot do anything to stop people from being addicted to what they want to do. If you want to make money or you want to have fun through gambling and you end up becoming addicted what do you expect the government to do. People should learn to take responsibility of what is going on in there life's.

Let's not overhype this, you've linked to a Youtube short from a news reporter wanting to create a clickbait journalist article and it includes quotes from the head of the "national gambling board" who has incentive to claim the reach is a bigger problem because it grows his agency. It would be better to link to actual research rather than just lots of clips edited together with anecdotal stories. The big issue they claim is online gambling, but that has been around for decades and is hardly new. If people want to spend their money on this form of entertainment they will find a way. The only way to stop it is to try and block non-conforming sites at the ISP level but it can enter dangerous territory as that makes censorship of other things more possible, like things that might be against the government but that the public should know. We have to take some individual responsibility in life, but perhaps education to prevent addiction could be more comprehensive.

The regulations need to be improved, as well as the supervision of all parties involved in online gambling, including casinos, gamblers, and also the taxes that flow into government revenue. Overcoming gambling addiction, which has already become quite significant, will be difficult. There needs to be a change in society's perspective regarding gambling. The generation that is already addicted should be saved as much as possible. But even more importantly, the new generation that has not yet been introduced to gambling.

I am surprised by this data you provided, I have thought for a long time now that America is the country that will come out the first place on the list of country where online gambling is very popular because the data I see online always says that United States is one of the world's largest gambling market. Most of those regulated casino usually ask for KYC and the regulators usually put age restriction limit but they can not completely stop underage gambling since some kids can still bypass the process.

I see that recently many countries have made new regulations on the online gambling industry, not only South Africa such as Italy, Thailand, England and many others. The reasons are almost the same, being responsible and overcoming addiction and so on, whether the regulations implemented by these countries are successful or not, I think that regulation is only close to taxation, to address casinos being responsible or limiting players under 18 years of age or under or addicted to online gambling, I think is difficult and unsuccessful. In fact, we know that online gambling is currently very easy to access in various ways, A and B are alternatives for players to enter. I'm not sure that any regulations are not optimal, except for state taxes.

This is really not making sense to me, how can the South Africa government be so incompetent when it comes to protecting its citizens from gambling addiction, especially when other countries are doing a better job. I understand that citizens also have a responsibility to protect themselves by not allowing gambling to control their lives to the point where they can’t go a single day without gambling. I keep saying people should see gambling as a game for fun and entertainment, not as a source of income.

From what I've heard about South Africa, online and smartphone based gambling has increased significantly there in post COVID period. Most gamblers there are losing everything spending night after night pressing button on their device, whether during breaks at work or even from comfort of their own bedroom. I've also heard that even when they travel, they still don’t find any peace, they remain fixated on gambling.
What surprised me the most is that they are apparently still operating under 22 year old gambling law. I don't know how is it possible to control current tsunami of digital gambling using law from an era when cell phone and internet were completely unheard of.

Besides the tax they receive is alone to tell them that the gambling activities is on the rise but since the tax is big and increasing, some government does not care, all they care is the fat drop coming in for them so they do not bother to do what they are supposed to do to protect their citizens from the complaints of they being addicted to gambling. This is just so common in the third world countries.

If there's no control anymore, I think the government badly needs to step in. Probably, they need to shut down every online casino that is available in their region and try to regulate only a few so that they can monitor the players and how they gamble. ---
How would government help? Shutting down is same as banning, that was discussed previously many times, did not help much. Will regulation help? Gambling plague has already been spread. Government is fighting not with problem, but with consequences already. They should have started doing long time ago. Gambling has spread its roots everyone. Severing one root not going to help much. Personally I dont know how to fight with gambling addiction. Because all the methods used I saw help little, and for a little period of time. Gamblers always find way to bypass preventive measures. Just to add with this one, if the government is benefitting from it, why in the hell will they shut down online gambling? I'm not saying that the government of South Africa isn't doing anything, but I don't see them as somebody that will stop online gambling because it will affect their revenue through taxes. The jump from 15% of all gamblers who are on online gambling before COVID to now around 86% is a big jump considering how long it took which is only 6 years. Unfortunately, the virus has been spread already, and there's no way for the government to stop it. Increasing their tax? That will not change everything. The best thing that they can do is to just educate the people how addictive gambling could be. I'm not against gambling in general because I believe that anybody must have access to it. It's just that the mindset of gamblers when they gamble makes them addicted into it. Gambling addiction is very hard to fight that's why in my case, I already prevent myself from getting addicted into it before it happens to me. This isn't the case to some gamblers especially to some who sees gambling as a way for them to make huge buckos.

Their people should really be given proper education. Public likely has very limited knowledge about gambling. When people engage in online casino and crypto gambling platform driven by emotion without utilizing responsible gambling and self exclusion tool such outcome are inevitable. Yes, their government should work to put an end to underage gambling by any means necessary. From what I understand after watching this video, if thing continue this way then it won't take long for families to be destroyed. If government and stakeholders do not take proper step then situation will worsen.

To be honest, I think it's a matter of education. People can't assess their chances and don't realize that this way they'll only lose all their money. At the same time, they don't have well-paid jobs and think gambling is a way to solve their debt problems. The government can try its best, but I don't think that will help. It would be better to improve the quality of education and create new jobs.

People will complain if the government steps in and regulates gambling extensively, some want their freedom. If South Africans want to curb gambling addiction, they should begin with individual awareness. Many addicted gamblers should repent by themselves, someone addicted can find new ways to bypass government regulation, the healing begins with individuals taking control of their habits. The solution is for the government to build a progressive economy in which they don't need to rely on gambling as an alternative source of income.

It’s really disheartening seeing a lady who trusted on making quick money through gambling, she lamented with bitterness about how gambling has drained her finances. This is a call for the government to impose a regulation on online gambling for instance blocking those illegal gambling sites that aren’t operating under a regulatory authority.According to a man he said that gambling addiction has become a pandemic, and indeed it’s a pandemic because as of last year the total estimated amount of money spent on online gambling by South Africans was 80 billion Euros, you could imagine how huge that amount of money is.A regulation would best handle situations like irresponsible gambling from citizens of South Africa, children below 18 shouldn’t be allowed to access gambling sites and a deposit limit should be imposed in that region.

I think this is not just a problem in one country anymore, it's a major problem especially in third-world countries where regulations are not strict or where some government officials are being bribed by casino operators, because if they really care about the people it's easy for them to follow the working regulations of countries like the UK, so it's not an excuse, they are allowing it to happen so gambling exposure will increase and they can make more money for their own pockets. Casinos would understand if regulations are strict because it's not their purpose to destroy people's lives as that could also put their businesses at risk, eventually when things get worse the government might just decide to ban gambling, so there has to be a balance here and obviously it's the government's lack of proper regulation that is the problem.
