Just read this article: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/technology/jamiebartlett/100012608/could-a-crypto-currency-like-bitcoin-help-child-pornographers-evade-police/. Quote: "But the Bitcoin Foundation has agreed to work with the Gates Foundation to try improve methods of stopping child exploitation, which is welcome."

Does anybody know, what these methods are the Bitcoin foundation is improving in order to stop the increasing number of transactions done in the context of distributing child pornography? What actions did they take so far? To my (limited) knowledge, any action that would prevent the current widespread usage of Bitcoin for purchases of child pornography would also directly undermine the anonymity of Bitcoin which is often seen as the one big advantage over common online payment systems. Does anybody have more information on this matter?

They should stop linking bitcoin directly to all kind of criminality. Instead, put the real bad asses to jail. If you destroy the source, all other indirect measures are not needed anymore. This applies for all kind of currencies in my opinion

Agree, but probably they want to make profit from that too.

+1

Besides, what have the authorities done other than shut down SilkRoad and seize a cool $80Mil.
There are other black markets and I am guessing child pornography on Tor.

What are they doing about it?
They are paid for a reason.

Let's not forget that ALL of these things don't happen because people want to make Bitcoins.
It happens because they want to make (fiat) money.

I am guessing if it was just Bitcoins we would know WHO gave WHAT to WHO for WHAT.

Correct me if I am wrong here....

+2 USA! USA! USA!

But now back to my initial question. What methods is the article referring to when saying "But the Bitcoin Foundation has agreed to work with the Gates Foundation to try improve methods of stopping child exploitation[...]"

all i think it's really horrible that major torrent sites like Btmon.com still provide that kind of shit for free.

can't they shut down that horrible stuff?

i mean sex is fine and all.  but if you record it you encourage other people to do it (including regular porn).  and half the actors are on meth or something

NO, that is because they are pedophiles themselves!

A lot of idiocy I'm reading.

Child Pornographers and pedophiles will consume child porn with BTC or with cash or anyway they want. BTC doesn't make it easy for them, or if it does, makes it easy for everyone to make any kind of distant transaction faster.

Sex is fine, porn is fine and not all actors are on meth... But sorry if they like drugs... the financial crisis was originated in part by the euphoric state cause by cocaine in the members of that "well-respected" part of society called the upper-class (Wall Street and other decision makers).

If anybody ever Spotlight-searches the hard drives on my various Macs, they will find hundreds of hits on "child porn." Of course not one of them has any pics or vids in it, just copies of virtually every scientific article written on the topic in the past 30 years.

Oh--Michael Seto is a Canadian researcher who is maybe North America's foremost expert on child porn offenders.

i downloaded it once when i was drunk or something, and cops are currently searching my files ( i have almost 3000 BTC).  i did zero the free space when i realized what i did.  but seriously am i going to jail for this and losing my million dollar fortune?  cause if that happens i just lost faith in the system.

all I'm saying. Is there an internet watchdog group that pays attention to government interference on the web? Seems like it would be a good idea to have one.

Bitcoin is not anonymous. It can be used anonymously if (tedious) precautions and measures are taken, and no mistakes are made. By default it's pseudo-anonymous, meaning obvious identity links don't exist. There is nothing wrong with enhancing police procedures to take advantage of mistakes made by criminals.

That would be the ultimate depressant - to spend your entire work day searching for child porn. Maybe this is a trick to see which guys apply for those jobs, so the police can investigate them.

You can find out more for yourself at bitcoinfoundation.org .

This, along with assassination markets and ransom-ware, are serious issues. The kind of things that will scare soccer moms and allow a pretext to be created by those who would like to see bitcoin go away.

In all seriousness though the people attacking Bitcoin are coming up with just about any kind of bullshit to scare people away from it, yes it's a bad thing, but they should be going after the people who do this not the currency itself.

I consider assassination markets an urban legend, I mean even the SR guy only could find a fed who posed as hitman ... or did I miss some story here?
