I don't currently have a powerful computer, just a swamped laptop so I won't be able to participate, however I'm really interested in this technology.
Since private users are more prone to fail shouldn't every file get hosted in 4-5 different places?
Is there an easy, straightforward way to pay x-times to store the file x-times? Say that the file is your mangum opus but your competitor is trying to steal it and you don't want to lose it, would this service help?
3 people (that are private citizens) could very easily walk away from the task of keeping files. So there needs to be the ability for more redundancy and proper incentives.
It's an exciting idea, I hope you're able to work it out.
So we are just saying 3x for now. We will know that the proper recommendation should be when the network is live. So yes people will walk away from the task of keeping files, but: A) They won't get paid B) We check the file every little bit, so unless all 3 sources go down simultaneously your file is fine. If its your mangum opus then set the redundancy to 100x. Minus thermonuclear war your file should be safe.

3x is fine at beta stage. When the network is live, 5x for small files and 10x for large files may be needed. There should be a mechanism to dynamically vary the redundancy when a file is popular, or connection to those who are hosting the file is slow.

The final goal is for the user to be able to specify the redundancy amount they require.

I see no mention of batch #2 being open yet but the list in the OP seems to get populated already. Are these the late-comers from batch #1 or did I miss something?
Anyway, consider this my BFL-style preorder for a slot in batch #2. Very interesting project I could very well use as a storage/communication-backend for my own P2P-project.

Guys! If you're interested on the project I think that's better to check their official webpage ( http://storj.io) and social networks rather than posting that you're interested on the beta. On their page you can apply for an invite Social Networks:The OP seems to be offline - super3 --> Last Active: July 02, 2014, 03:26:48 AM And on the Storj social networks there's more movement than here! Don't you think?

What is Metadisk?Metadisk is the first storage focused blockchain-distributed web application, which means that there is no central authority or entity that controls your data. Metadisk runs on top of the Storj prototype platform, which allows users to sell their hard drive space for coins. How does it work? After the file is encrypted and uploaded, a SHA-256 hashing algorithm will be applied, which produces a hash of the file that serves both as a unique identifier and a way to detect file tampering. The generated hash will then be stored in a block chain entry. Metadisk communicates with the Storj network to find available storage resources, then transfers the encrypted file to three (3) separate locations. This 3-time storage complies with the cloud storage redundancy standard. Because all data that enters the network is encrypted, malicious nodes and thieves cannot open, copy or modify files, because they do not have access to the decryption keys for them. The current functions and specifications that Metadisk offers are just a small prototype of Storj. Metadisk allows us to experiment with many methods and algorithms, while still providing user security, privacy, scalability, and cost savings over many current cloud storage systems. Screenshothttps://i.imgur.com/4JjXo46.png Hi There ! Please include me in the beta. I have been interested in proof of storage for a long time now. Hell I can even code stuff if you like ! Regards

Unsure. 2/3 libraries needed are feature complete. I've made great progress on the client side, but the conferences and crowdsale have taken up most of my time. Once those calm down, I'll be able to finish up the prototype and start network testing. We will do it incrementally. So 10 people first, fix and improve, 100 people, fix and improve, etc.
