Have to report a little bug, related to some older posts.

The linux version seems to get stuck at some blocks. I don't know why. Last time I had the problem was at block 311792.

With the windows version from slimcoin.club (slimcoin-qt.exe 0.3.2.1) the problem does not occur.

Can any other Linux user confirm this? I have seen some days ago that there was at least one peer in the network stuck at the same block height. I tried the linux client on two different machines in two different countries. I don't know what is the newest "working" client now, but both the tbartlett0 version and the original "John Smith" version have the same problem.

PS: The "PoB / Price report / investigation" I mentioned some posts ago is not dead, only delayed because of some technical / time issues. I hope to get time this week to finish it.

Look at my posts above - Linux & Windows versions v0.4.0ppc-201-g8891c82-dirty-alpha got stuck... Only re-download with v.0.3.2.1-alpha helps...

Yes, but I was using Linux wallet 0.3.2.1 and it had the same problem. I also redownloaded the blockchain several times (from slimcoin.club's last snapshot at 236000) & deleted all files.

Now all seems to be working fine as I downloaded the blockchain with the 0.3.2.1 Windows client (via Wine).

Perhaps my error was to use tbartlett0's code (which is <s>also 0.3.2.1</s>0.3.2.0, but has some minor improvements). I will test it again with the last "kryptoslab" 0.3.2.1 code, so I am sure it's not because of an already fixed bug or a new bug in tbartlett0's code.

Meanwhile I'm thinking about a little marketing plan Wink

PS: Unfortunately I wasn't able to figure out which code is the one that makes the client stuck. I've tried tbartlett0's and kryptoslab's last commits, and no luck. They are marked as 0.3.2.0, however. I don't find the code for 0.3.2.1.

@ ArchitektoR, if you are here: Which code (developer and git commit) are you using for your Linux client?

I have slimcoin running on a RaspberryPi
"version" : "v0.3.2.0-17-g479009d-alpha"
which is fine and stable. I'm not PoS minting, only playing with PoB.
No problems with stuck block chains:
"blocks" : 360514

It says "version" : "v0.3.2.0-g154b52a-alpha", was trying to find the right source of it - and it seems it is https://github.com/kryptoslab/slimcoin/archive/v0.3.2.1.tar.gz

Thanks! You are right, the "official" release 0.3.2.1 is version v0.3.2.0-g154b52a-alpha. Unfortunately, i get stuck at the same block (311792) with this version, too. I also have tried version g479009d (the one used by the Raspberry Pi version), with the same result.

I don't know if this is a bug we will have to observe, or if it's my fault ... it's strange that it happens on two different Linux machines and with different wallet files. My slimcoin.conf is fairly standard, I only have added some servers and put reservebalance=100000 to disable Proof of Stake. I use the command line version (slimcoind) and have compiled it without UPNP support. My last try will be to compile the QT version and try to compile with UPNP enabled.

As i said some posts earlier, with the Windows client 0.3.2.1 the stuck does not occur (even using Wine on a Linux PC), so I can copy the blockchain from there.

I remember that my client also got stuck at 111988, and that there were some other people having this problem too. I solved it downloading the last snapshot from slimcoin.club and a snapshot provided by masterofdisaster.

I would suggest to fill issues in the Github site. But which one? https://github.com/kryptoslab/slimcoin, https://github.com/tbartlett0/slimcoin or https://github.com/gjhiggins/Slimcoin ? Perhaps we should try to contact these three to see where to post the "official" bug reports.

Yea, I trade only at BTER (but not much).

I think for all Slimcoin users having coins at an exchange, it is important to "create some volume".

The problem is that at C-Cex and BTER buy and sell order spread is so high that bots (and humans) probably won't like to trade because of the high risk.

So it's important to create some buy and sell orders, even for small amounts, to reduce the spread. The fair price, I think, considering buy orders at 330 (at BTER) and sell orders at 700 (C-Cex)-1000(BTER) satoshis, is about 500-600. So the proposed values for sell orders would be around 550-600 satoshis and buy orders around 450-550. With some luck, a trader will be able to win both SLM and BTC with this strategy.

It looks like we are seeing a very slow recovery of both price and difficulty.

There were some buys over 1000 satoshis last week, but volume at BTER is still very small. Perhaps the growing optimism in the whole altcoin world is the reason. We shouldn't let go this small opportunity.

Most people still don't know about SLM and it's revolutionary approach. So I'm designing the strategy of a little, low- to zero-cost, guerilla-marketing plan.

That's what you can do (feel free, no obligation!):

1) Mention SLM in related threads. (e.g. the Supersleepers thread, threads about PoS and alternative consensus mechanisms)
2) Comment this thread with constructive posts, even small ones (e.g. about price swings etc.).
3) Comment the official Proof of Burn thread. Remember, we need devs, and technically oriented people will be more likely to read this thread in the development section than our mostly pump-and-dump oriented altcoin subforum.
4) Set some buy and sell orders near the buy/sell average. In the best of the case, you can make a little profit benefitting from the bid-ask spread.
5) If you have an altcoin blog, mention SLM Wink You can also comment related news in the cryptocurrency media sphere, but please don't spam.
6) If you are selling something or provide some services, consider to accept SLM. There is a great chance that even if development stays stalled the actual price is a total bargain.
7) If you can, post bug reports both here and to Github. We must decide which should be the official Guthub repo. There is: https://github.com/gjhiggins/Slimcoin (newest, but dev wants it to be a "unofficial" one, we should contact him), https://github.com/kryptoslab/slimcoin ("new official", as old dev didn't reappear), and https://github.com/tbartlett0/slimcoin
Cool We should start a new official ANN thread with actualized informations. Information of the first post of this thread is outdated, even the logo does not appear anymore. I can start it & inform the moderators, maintain the start page and reserve a space if a new dev jumps in.

Please comment what you think, above all the last 2 items.

I have also opened a thread about the potential benefits of Proof of burn. Tl:dr; PoB rewards long-term engagement and so in a mature market prevents short-term pump-and-dump scenarios and leads to a better stability and usability as a currency.

Feel free to comment: PoB and long-term PoS cryptos are the best solution for Greece

Yes, the difficulty is pretty low, but it is slowly growing again. What I don't know is if a pool is still online. But I think with this diff solo mining could work fine.

PoB (solo) mining works perfectly, even with very small "EffectiveBurnCoins" scores.

Don't forget that you can easily start mining for Slimcoin in the wallet - as the dcrypt mining algo is designed for CPU.

Help Tab > Debug Window > Console Tab

and simply type:

Code:
setgenerate true

or

Code:
setgenerate true <number-of-cpu-cores>

To stop mining type:

Code:
setgenerate false

Depending on your processor and number of cores it may take a while to find a block though.

check difficulty with:

Code:
getdifficulty

Long gone are the days when you could mine for Bitcoin this way.   Smiley

There is a working GPU miner for this currency:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=613213.msg10012906#msg10012906

I have mined about 90K SLM with it since the difficulty dropped so there is that...

There are some interesting optimizations in the code, I could not figure it out at first until I had the idea myself: they hash the block header then they setup the index value and iterate it through the hash without creating the internal buffer or scratchpad. When they get to the end they check if the index value aligned (1 in 16 chance) and if it does not then they abort the hash. That means the skip list is never re-hashed for the hashes they do and the count/number of times the scratchpad is hashed is known before hashing the scratchpad to create the buffer. That way they can abort if the buffer would be too big without first filling it up with a very good improvement in speed. Very good job whoever coded the GPU miner Bravo!

A couple of improvements I can suggest would be to hash the half state of the initial hash like bitcoin miners do.

The other improvement idea I have is theoretical (have not tried it) but I will throw it out there: when the scratchpad is re-hashed only 1 byte is changed and the scratchpad always starts off filled with 0xFF and it is always set to a byte that came from a ascii hex digit (only 16 combinations). That means for a count of N there are only N^16 possible hashes for the buffer and since you can progressively hash this you can stop at whatever N you please. What I'm saying is that if you have enough memory you can pre-calculate a fair chunk of the possible buffers then use a lookup table to retrieve the pre-calculated hashes to progressively add the rest of the hash.

Even just calculating the first 4 iterations would mean 2*4 less sha256 blocks per hash with a reasonable amount of memory usage...

I'm pretty certain that the GPU miner was the same one used since ~block 17K since the low count values ware actually in the range for the GPU miner (less than 16 count) and not the iteration limited CPU miner which worked best at around 100.

I am still mining this and checking up on it now and again because of Proof of burn. I cant find fault in this aspect of slimcoin so in my opinion the currency deserves to live. Its just a shame that the PoW function was not effective in preventing a GPU miner or that that was even promised in the first place. Its also a shame that the PoS aspect is also not working well an that it wasnt completely disabled.

If there is going to be marketing for this coin I would advice directing it towards getting developers interested rather than speculators so that these problems can be addressed and slimcoin can maintain its place as the first PoB cryptocurrency.

I agree, a stable development team is the most important next step for Slimcoin. The code is now pretty stable, but also a bit dated and there are still minor issues (like the linux wallet somewhen getting "stuck"). That's why I consider important to install the discussion about Proof-of-burn (commenting the PoB thread in the Development section is the most simple way) in the more technically-oriented part of the community.

We can also comment on the more technical oriented related reddit posts. If you have other ideas how to market it to developers, you can post them ... I surely can help but unfortunately I am not a coder.

For myself I consider Slimcoin (and PoB) interesting because of the economic consequences of the proof-of-burn mechanism. In my opinion, it's the reward mechanism which best rewards long-term investments. As short-term investments (pump-and-dump-style) lead often to bubbles and crashes, I consider the long-term/short-term investor ratio crucial for stability. But for this to happen, there must be a mature market first.

I've contacted a123/kryptoslab, he's still alive. He has said for now he won't show up in this thread, but that he perhaps can try a code merge with the newer developments of gjhiggins and tbartlett0.

For now it is nice solo mining SLM with a GPU, the reward is high because of the low difficulty.

I have tried to contact the original Slimcoin dev, he seems to have left this forum, perhaps he's in vacation, but he has also beein inactive at Github. And the information in the first post of this thread is totally outdated - in fact, the only link that still is valid is the BTER one.

That is why I think we should start a new ANN thread. I will do it next week if there is no objection here.

The thread will be called "Slimcoin - Official thread - First Proof of Burn cryptocurrency". If you have another better idea, you can post it here. I think the title should be clean, without special characters, to give a serious appearance.

I'm also in process of requesting moderator status in http://reddit.com/r/slimcoin. Meanwhile I'm trying out Voat.co as another forum, perhaps it's a better alternative (I particularly dislike the Reddit restriction that threads older than 6 months are automatically closed).

The only problem of Voat is that it does not allow subforums, like Reddit. If someone knows a good (i.e. with not too much ads) reddit-like forum platform with subforums, that would be even better.
