In London, in de wijk Greenwich, hebben ze een streep getrokken, daar is de nul-meridiaan (lengtegraad).
Als je met één voet links gaat staan en één voet rechts, sta je tegelijkertijd op beide halfronden :-)
Langs de streep staan ook veel steden genoemd, zie de foto, en er zijn altijd veel toeristen die op zoek zijn naar hun eigen hoofdstad, of die van het ene land naar het andere springen (nou ja, de vermelding ervan).
Op die lijn is de tijdzone dus GMT (0). Nederland ligt een uur oostelijk (we zitten dus NIET op het westelijk halfrond, al horen we bij ‘het westen’), en hier is de tijdzone GMT +1.
In de zomer schakelen we allemaal over op zomertijd, dan is het in Greenwich dus GMT +1, en hier vanzelf GMT +2.
