@philipma, don't forget to factor the Pi that's separate.
You still need a Pi for each of the RK-Boxes and a beefier PSU as well.
With the S3's power draw at 390W, you can get cheaper PSU's for each, or fit more S3's onto a large PSU.
Can't say the same for the Rk-box which could possibly be more than the hypothetical 480W stated.
Also, if you want the most hash possible, you know you'll be able to overclock the S3 if it's anything like the S1 (which it looks like by all accounts and specs). So probably closer to 550 GH/s perhaps.
So let's say 5 TH/s for arguments sake for the 9 S-3's you gave in your example.
That blows the Rk-Box out of the water and out of the atmosphere at the same time.
yeah this S3 is a game changer

I was all set to order this but now I am hesitating. I think a lot rides on price of s3 compared to rk-box. I think a price drop will be needed before they even release. Good for us bad for Rocksie.

Don't tell me you've been hiding under a rock all this time. Antminer S3 just blew up Rockminer/Rock Xie/Friedcat's spot. Consider it blown.

If Bitmain price it to high, miners will come here. Low, vice versa.

I did buy a R-box, it just went out for shipping . The tracking number doesn't show up on DHL though, it looks like a rockminer number ne ways. Any ideas on how long it takes to ship/tracking?

I am keenly interested in both of these. It is all about price difference. My other two caveats are they work as advertised and the rk-box is not super loud.

Holy shit, spaghetti wires like you talk about! Something about a loose Pi and USB hub and USB cables all over the dam place just sounds messy. And that doesn't even factor in the power connection to the PSU yet. So far S3 has the edge over the RK-box in simplicity. No pi's, hubs, put wire through this hole, then plug here nonsense.

Thanks for linking! I hadn't seen that yet. Looks really interesting, and I really like how fast the web interface is. I don't know if its just me, but I find the interface for the S1 to be a little on the slow side. Not sure about that reject rate though, looks a little high

Hey in 10 days both will be out we can compare them figure out which one is better. For now I am making a pile of coins looking to spend them on one of each or maybe just one not the other.
This looks to me to be the first close competition of gear in a while.
1 btc
1/2 th hash
1/2 kwatt
size is close . just need to wait a little longer now.
this may be good for miners to have some choice.
BTW these may kill of all 1th tank size miners if they work well and are priced correctly.
this size the right to a sp30 type of miner.

If a x wire snags on y wire on your home shelf, then you try to pull on one and it snags and the whole thing falls off...spaghetti wires does matter. Also, this thing is not stackable at all, something it looks like you can do easily with the S3 without shelving.

I don't know, you get a couple of lag bolts in the holes on the bottom and top two sides of the X and you may be able to stack these. Not easily of course, but still stackable.
