based on your suggestions I made some changes
URLs are now un-encrypted which will allow google to index them
also I enabled direct access and hot linking

for example you can link directly to wikileaks like this

http://bitviewer.net/browse.php?u=http://wikileaks.bit

just put whatever .bit site you want to browse in front of http://bitviewer.net/browse.php?u=

or you can be really slick and embed links like this
http://wikileaks.bit

hopefully this will get more people interested in and viewing .BIT domains
enjoy!

All we need now is someone to setup a loadbalancer point so every other user with sufficient bandwidth could setup their own .bit proxy and the loadbalancer could, well, balance traffic between the various proxies.

Nice!
I wonder if you could add a rewrite so that,

http://bitview.net/someaddress.bit

would map to your proxy script. This would make it easier to remember and really clean for people to just type in when they need.

You, sir, are doing great work.

I would think this makes namecoins more valuable. Are there even price charts for NMC anymore?

Would https make this even more popular? Give an inch, we ask for a mile.

Am I doing something wrong ? I seem just to get a fma.com advertisement with 'we're changing the face of the internet landscape'.  I tried to input several domain names at http://www.bitviewer.net, like http://www.microsoft.bit, http://www.wikileaks.bit etc, but just got the add. Could anyone provide me with a sample bit-adress so I could see how this service works ? Thanks.

You would only be able to access a .bit site if they registered the .bit address. Somehow I doubt microsoft would do that but it's mildly surprising that some other user hasn't already.

Two pages to visit:

http://dot-bit.org/Main_Page

http://dot-bit.org/Websites

I'm no expert on this but I believe your next question is "why"? I think the idea is these names cannot be shutdown by any authority.

btw wikileaks.bit works for me. Maybe you are putting in the http://? An url doesn't include that as that is the protocol. For me microsoft.bit redirects to fma.com.

There may be more out there but those are the only ones I know of. I think the DNS server redirects any .bit domains that do not work to fma.com

Now if we could only get rid of the ".bit" part.

Already I find myself unconsciously omitting it, instead typing:

http://bitcoin
etc.

this is great. the more as masterpool really is down by now.

once the next foxyproxy version comes out you need to set up a website with the new auto configuration feature (install foxproxy, reload page and click yes --> namecoin support). Setting up the page should be very simple with a template from eric, the foxyproxy developer.

edit: 2012-03-04 masterpool is working

this is how the yourls url shortener solves this:
(http://yourls.org   !-f  and !-d rewrite every query not a file or directory)

.htaccess
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ /yourls-loader.php [L]

php:
$request = str_replace( $base.'/', '', $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] . $_SERVER['REQUEST_URI'] );

How about a coral cache type of interface where you simply prepend the domain you're trying to reach with the bitviewer.net domain..

Example, to reach wikileaks.bit, you would go to wikileaks.bit.bitviewer.net.

If you don't know what coral cache is, check out http://www.reddit.com.nyud.net/

Perhaps this will be useful?.?.?

http://badpopcorn.com/blog/2006/04/22/coral-cache-and-htaccess/

It's for redirecting refers from big sights to the coral cache but you might be able to use it for your proxy by matching against something other than refer and pointing to your proxy? only gave this two seconds of thought...

I think I mentioned this somewhere else, but it would also be useful to have direct access to your proxy so that individuals could create their own proxy.pac file that redirects *.bit requests directly to you from their browser.

I think the simplest way to do this is using a catch-all virtual domain in your apache conf, and then a catch-all rewrite (which could easily be put in the conf too so no need for another file). This would be a directed to a different handler than the normal bitviewer.net (without extra subdomain). Also, the php script would be changed very slightly for how it grabs the target domain.

If you wanted an exception for the www subdomain then it can just be placed higher up in the file.

I think the virtual domain lookup is likely faster than processing a rewrite file (which sometimes can have a bit of a performance hit). I'm not sure if placing the rewrite in the conf maybe helps with speed. Probably not a big concern though.

(I can't help further with specifics as it's been years now since I used Apache. Everything is Nginx for me nowadays, which has different configs/rewrites)

what about a real proxy to use with foxyproxy?

This is great but please note that if you get your site indexed by Google as a proxy then it won't take very long for it to no longer be accessible from China and other countries that put a lot of effort into blocking sites.

domain registration is said to me a manual process at this time. Once your domain has been registered, you'll receive an email from the admin about how to access your control panel. Or, so I've heard. I'd give it 24-72 hours.

Could you please paste a link into a message here that will work (I have tried using http://bitviewer.net/browse.php?u=http://ciyam.bit or going to the website and typing ciyam.bit but still takes me to FMA). Sad

(btw - I am trying this from China and got it tested from Australia as well with the same result)

Yup - but I got the email nearly two eight hours ago and can access the control panel fine and it says it is redirecting ciyam.bit to www.ciyam.bit and www.ciyam.bit to www.ciyam.com but still no joy.

But I will test it again tomorrow so hopefully will come good by then.

well, for me the link works just like that: http://ciyam.bit   (redirect to ciyam.com)
and also for example: http://bx.bit  Cool

I am using this method:
http://dot-bit.org/How_To_Install_Dns_Suffix

with bitviewer.net bx.bit works but ciyam.bit does not - problem with redirection? I guess cablepair will have to investigate this one.

Hi Ciyam.

If bitviewer has also the problem, either you are using the same dns server and it returns old/bad infos, either you both have cached old/bad infos (in your browser, or in the dns cache for bitviewer).
To be sure, i tested the 4 DNS servers and they all reply the ip address of my server (doing the redirect to www.ciyam.com).

So, wait a bit and it should work everywhere (cached data will be updated after a while).

[edit]I made a mistake when testing (if a domain didn't work, it was redirecting request using suffix on my server, which is working), only 2 servers are resolving ciyam.bit (the first ones), so, the problem should com from there. Need to wait i guess.[/edit]

i dont have time to look right now but if I remember correctly we are using the french and german dns servers to resolve .bit domains

some sneaky bastard has it setup within those two dns servers to resolve all unresolvable .bit domains to fma.com

go ahead and test it you can type whatever.bit and if its not a real website it will go to fma.bit

I plan on launching my own namedtobind .bit nameserver soon and that should remedy this kind of dns trickery (at least with bitviewer) and anyone that uses my nameserver for lookups - hopefully I will find the time this weekend to make that happen

thanks!

[...]
some sneaky bastard has it setup within those two dns servers to resolve all unresolvable .bit domains to fma.com
[...]

could it be that your sneaky bastard internet provider is intercepting your dns lookups?

For me the servers answer with "non-existing domain" just as expected.

that very well could be, I did not look far into it, just assumed it was coming from the DNS servers because I know its easy to fake requests like this
this is a dedicated server at a datacenter in the UK but it still does not surprise me

I tried the .reg file but zero luck (I guess this maybe because I am in China).

I also got someone in Australia to try the Posix method on a box running OpenSUSE but it also will not resolve any .bit addresses. Sad

They also just tried pinging namecoin-suffix.dot-bit.org but got an "unknown host namecoin-suffix.dot-bit.org" error.

try:
nslookup gee.bit.namecoin-suffix.dot-bit.org
this will look up gee.bit with suffix added directly on your default dns

nslookup gee.bit.namecoin-suffix.dot-bit.org 8.8.8.8
this will look up gee.bit with suffix added directly on the google dns.

if these won't work and you can not find another dns that works the suffix method might not work for you.

try:
nslookup gee.bit.namecoin-suffix.dot-bit.org

Thanks - this does work (I already use 8.8.8.8 for my DNS lookup) - but how do I get this to work through a browser?

After you have installed the .reg file try:

nslookup bx.bit

If this gives you an ip address it means that the suffix is installed and you are getting close.
note: nslookup does dns resolution in a different way than the os

If ping bx.bit still does not work it means your os is not using the suffix properly for "everyday" lookups.

It might be necessary to deactivate/activate your internet connection or even do a reboot.

also this might help: ipconfig /flushdns    (clears the dns cache, does not hurt)

What OS are you on? I assume you did use the .reg file from here: http://dot-bit.org/How_To_Install_Dns_Suffix ?

I am using Windows XP (sp 3) and when I try nslookup bx.bit I get 178.248.244.15 (if I use curl with the name I get a permanently moved message but if I curl the raw IP I get http://sv05.net-housting.de as a href).

Here is the result of ciyam.bit for each dns server :

Code:
for ip in $(echo 178.32.31.41 216.231.140.69 78.47.86.43 199.19.215.104); do echo "* Server : $ip"; host ciyam.bit $ip|grep ciyam.bit; echo ""; done
* Server : 178.32.31.41
ciyam.bit has address 178.32.31.42
ciyam.bit mail is handled by 5 srv03.web-sweet-web.net.

* Server : 216.231.140.69
Host ciyam.bit not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

* Server : 78.47.86.43
Host ciyam.bit not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

* Server : 199.19.215.104
Host ciyam.bit not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)

It seems some servers need to be updated...

http://proxy.dot-bit.org/

I've planned to work on the namecoin-bundle (native .bit support the simpliest way) soon, so, stay tuned if you're interested :p

Glad to see you still interested :p
Remember that a single man is not sufficient, so any help is appreciated :p
..and the whole Namecoin world rejoices!

Here is what needs to be done :
- namecoin bundle : easy support for .bit (mini GUI/systray to show nmc-control status [python ?] + proxy with nmc-control [python] + namecoind integrated)
- namecoin rules update : bigger records, revised fees
- bitcoin rebase : use latest bitcoin code, or another lib
- some GUIs to register domains, id, etc

Do you mean a portable version like the TOR bundle? That would be cool Also we can later on add onion support.
