First time I've mined with sgminer.  I'm getting 3.5 MHs with a 7950.  It's running at a cool 70 degrees on GPU-Z   Is that about the right hashing speed I would expect?
Nope. With the right miner and settings you should be up around 10MH/s with a 7950.

Post your bat and which miner (link) you are using... im capped at 7+ right now on a 7950.
Sorry but I don't have any 7950s. The miner I'm using is linked in the OP. For bat settings try --thread-concurrency 8128 -I 18 -g 2. Use a third party app like afterburner or trixx to set gpuclock/memclock. You probably know best where to set those but experiment. Be sure to delete any .bat files in your miner folder before you start it up with the new settings.

You'll never know what you're living for until you know what you're willing to die for.
Never look back, something might be gaining on you.

open a cmd window from that folder and paste that line into it and hit enter... if something is wrong it will say what it is... like the version posted on the OP told me --gpu-engine was unknown so I am using the other optimized AMD sgminer i had for X15 with talkcoin-mod for now.

Thread concurrency should only be listed once in the bat file. Delete one of them and set the one remaining to 8128. Look up gap should be 0

You can buy cheap at bittrex now. Risk free, and much cheaper than renting at current prices.

You may use the following line, Registering is not necessary:
sgminer --kernel nist5 -o next.awiki.org:8186 -u yourICEaddress -p . --queue 0 -s 1

The mining will start on the p2pool once the block value is >0 (not yet...).

20 blocks to go before the real start.

11 blocks to go before the pool gives work to miners.
