metacoin [xmt] - launched on 2/7/2014 by person1209 Original thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=454848.0

Metacoin is not like any other altcoin. Development to include a decentralized clearing system in its core started. This feature will make this coin truly unique with something that even bitcoin didn't achieved. For example with metacoin you will be able to exchange other altcoins without the need of an escrow or reputation thread. You'll be able to buy almost anything without worrying to get scam by a malicious seller...
The contracts in it allow metacoin transaction to be enforceable if anything goes wrong; these contracts can be redemeed at any time or get listed in an OTC market. It's a major stepstone since bitcoin itself. Don't miss out and read the paper here

Based on Quarkcoin, same algo

7/4/2014 list of new supernodes:
node1.metacoinproject.org (192.95.12.114)
node2.metacoinproject.org (185.13.36.169)
node3.metacoinproject.org (128.199.150.38)

node6.metacoinproject.org
node7.metacoinproject.org
node8.metacoinproject.org
node9.metacoinproject.org

How to sync the wallet ?

1) Manually add nodes under console
addnode node[number].metacoinproject.org add

2) Or create and add a metacoin.conf file
to to get it syncing, metacoin.conf file must be in appdata/roaming/metacoin dir on Windows or .metacoin on Linux

Example of a working metacoin.conf file :
Quote
server=1
port=8485
rpcport=8484
addnode=node1.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node2.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node3.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node4.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node5.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node6.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node7.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node8.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node9.metacoinproject.org

Mining:

mine using < gen=1 > in metacoin.conf or  < setgenerate true >  from the console
or
http://sourceforge.net/projects/philosopherstone/files/QRK/ miners for enhanced cpu mining
or
using sgminer for gpu mining.  It works using -k quarkcoin

The network tries to produce one block per 10 minutes. It does this by automatically adjusting how difficult it is to produce blocks.

Yes I know. I'll add a few more nodes once website launched!
You should compile the wallet by yourself until then. I'll come up with new instructions and updated packages.

Can this be mined with CPU?  When will more nodes be posted to allow syncing of wallet?

Metacoin will be the first currency with built-in escrow. More information to come (with a paper)!

But for now we'll start by fixing the network issue, adding more masternodes and launching community websites for metacoin project.

Yes can be mined with cpu but GPU miner have been released for quark algo and are far more efficient.
We're working on it, nodes will be added in the next hours.

New working nodes :

-  node1.metacoinproject.org on 192.95.12.114
-  node3.metacoinproject.org on 128.199.150.38

Four others on the way.
We have to deal with many providers to be reliable. Our advise is that you add the 9 root nodes in your metacoin.conf file as of today, it'll work like a transparent upgrade, and you'll never need to care about the IP of the working nodes.
Ex:
Quote
server=1
port=8485
rpcport=8484
addnode=node1.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node2.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node3.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node4.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node5.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node6.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node7.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node8.metacoinproject.org
addnode=node9.metacoinproject.org
addnode=137.135.210.36
addnode=162.243.101.220
rpcuser=metacoin_user

Hey dev......so I just got the chance to look into this coin a bit more and I see you took it over from the original developer.  The coin is no longer on any exchanges at the moment correct?  What kind of focus are you giving this coin?  Is this going to be a long term project for you, unlike the previous dev?

Thanks

Yes we took over the original dev and unfortunately this coin is no longer traded at any exchanges but we'll ask to www.usecryptos.com to relist the coin and see how it goes.

Our focus is entirely on Innovation. So yes this a long term, obviously a very long term project. Satoshi work was based on Chaum, Szabo and Dai papers on digital currency. We think it's time to go ahead and implement (in a smart way) many features that were envisioned for a true digital currency decades ago. Expect this coin to have more core features than bitcoin and other altcoins. The first one will be to add an trustless escrow service in the core of of the currency. Someone shared a very good paper explaining how it may work. We'll publish it once we're done with the website and other community services.
Economist are now thinking about what next after paper money http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/c47c87ae-e284-11e3-a829-00144feabdc0.html#axzz36eUKkbz6. Our answer is that it's time for a metacoin

"add an trustless escrow service in the core of of the currency".............DUDE, now we're talking!!  now that's something REALLY needed in crypto, was talking about this with my nephew.....this is the one benefit left that merchant services like PP offer to purchases of goods over current cryptos.

Great response man.......ya got my attention:-)

Because I liked this coin and wanted to pursue its development and also the other committed developers agreed with me.
Starting a new coin would have just give a momentum for one or two weeks, and then people would have left for a new altcoin... This is how things works in this space. As we're in a long term project, it doesn't matter whether starting a new coin or not: this coin is cheap, available and the hashrate is currently low... so it's the best combination for everyone (either trader or miner) to join now.

We launched a public/private repository to host projects and code public site

The repository currently host former metacoin code, now renamed metacoin-core. Devs are now working on updating the code to catch up with bitcoin 0.9 and also adding zerocoin feature to metacoin. I'll follow with a detailed roadmap as soon as I get it.

On my side, I'm dealing with forum softwares (install, config and customization) so we can add a forum to the official website.

We are still looking for enthusiasts pool operators to bring metacoin to more people.

I'm writing posts explaining the goal of the metacoin project. We're still working to bring the official website back...
Devs won't answer on bitcointalk because of privacy concerns. So if you want to ask details or anything directly to the devs, do it on the official forum.

PS: difficulty on the network is slowly rising. Don't miss your chance to be part of something big!!

It's too early to be listed in exchange.
because currently it's simple another alt coin without any innovation.
If listed, it will hurt public impression
thus jeopardize long term reputation.

Yes I understand what you mean but people need to now that they won't get stuck with a bunch worthless coins. Also being on exchange makes the coin available to more potential stakeholders. So It's a good thing to be publicly traded. I think we should manage to get exchange at the same time we release the alpha version of metacoinv2 (on testnet).

Hey all.  It seems that meta2pool decided to not work on metacoin
and i have been thinking to revive it.

I will have a lot of free time starting Wednesday next week ( way too much was going on for me to continue it earlier )

My problem at the moment is that i recently re-downloaded the client and the super node up is no longer up.

I think the hashrate of the coin was something like 1mhs since i abandoned it

I noticed that zcoins.org is the only pool still mining this coin but adding them as a node is not syncing the wallet.

If anyone has a connection to the coin please let me know.

Since the quark-algo is kind of lame these days i'm thinking i could work on converting to x11 or something like that

Though I'm not the greatest coder and am unfamiliar with a lot of that kind of stuff with cryptocoding

I plan to work with others

If I can get the wallet to sync soon I will have a decent amount of coins in my old wallet which i mined on one of my alt miners.

I plan to use this for development and giveaways.

I don't like being greedy and it seems to plague a lot of the alt-coins

If i cannot get the coin at its current state i could relaunch it as a new coin.

If i can, i could plan on a lot.

Usecryptos took off the coin since most likely the wallet wasnt syncing or the low volume

I was bored tonight so i decided to mess with the QT form files, it's a work in progress but i wanted to style the wallet it looks like this (for now)

This probably isnt too important compared other things to work on with a coin but i thought i'd share

Hi Metacoin Developers & Supporters,

We launched a new project at Coins Source and wanted you to be among the first developers to know about it. It is called the Trust Index. We've created a trustworthiness index for the crypto-currency community.

As you know, the entire field of crypto-currency has become a breeding ground for scam artists and the likes. We are trying to create a system that will help to distinguish between honest developers like you and developers that are creating coins to make a quick profit that have less than honorable intentions.

Your participation in the Trust Index will be beneficial to developers such as you that are working hard to create an entirely new technology. It will also be helpful to members of the community when they are considering coins that they want to support or to invest their time and energy.

Here is the link for the Trust Index: http://www.coinssource.com/trust/

We are just starting out with this so it will take some time to develop momentum but I think that this would be a good opportunity for MetaCoin. Obviously, your support would help to spread the word and make the scoring of more significance. Please let me know what you think and we would greatly appreciate your support.

If you have any questions:

Don't hesitate to chat with us on our site
Email me: thamed@coinssource.com
Skype: Anaxai9

Best of luck with Metacoin,

Man, I'm not sure I am liking the idea of a dev coming back that abandoned the coin in the first place!  You already left us all out to dry and wasted much time for many people, what's to stop that from happening again?!

Personally I started mining this because it was taken over by someone who seemed would be dedicated to the coin's success, we need a dev that can be counted on!

IMJim, don't worry.  I'm still the lead developer of this project. But as you may imagine, additionnal innovations in this coin will require a lot of work. The former dev will work as any of the others dev. I'm still involved and even if he left again i'll be there!

And thanks for your support!

This project looks interesting.  I can't even recall it's release months ago, seems like the type of thing that would have caught my attention.  Hopefully development actually makes progress and it isn't abandoned again.

Who's concept was it that came up with this coin's proposed "decentralized clearing system", the original dev?  If so does the new dev team have the resources and ability to implement this technology in a working platform?

IMJim, don't worry.  I'm still the lead developer of this project. But as you may imagine, additionnal innovations in this coin will require a lot of work. The former dev will work as any of the others dev. I'm still involved and even if he left again i'll be there!

And thanks for your support!

So is this Alexander Ore working on the project?  Did he ever work on the project or is this just some guy who had a cool idea, made up a whitepaper, threw it up on the internet and you decided to try to implement it?

I'm not really a coding guy but I glanced over the source and didn't notice anything that jumped out at me.  Is any of this stuff currently implemented in the code, or is it all still just a work in progress?

I am reading the whitepaper at the moment and this was clearly done by someone who is technologically proficient.  The majority of the whitepapers I see by these scam coins are laughable, this is definitely in a different league.

Yeah, I felt the same reading the white paper myself.......hadn't read before you posted earlier.  Got me curious enough to ask more about it.

Forgot to mention Dev......I am sure you are aware, but in case you are not.....the wallet seems to take quite some time to fully open on 2 different computers I have.  One of them is empty too so not an issue with over sized wallet.  Something to maybe look at in the next wallet upgrade.  Have not noticed any problems once opened though.

Thanks everyone for your support.

Alex is one of the devs involved in this project. I've to admit that I don't know him personally and I also can't grab him anytime I want but I trust him and I admire his work. He says he has started to write a working implementation of his paper so I'll ask him for a detailed roadmap.

Currently the former dev and I are trying to upgrade metacoin basis code to bitcoin 9.2.1. I run out of time recently because of my main job taking over, but I'll get my holidays in few days so expect to see a big jump in the next weeks. I also try to create a healthy environment for the coin to succeed (website, forums, documentation, developer website, IRC...). This take time especially as it require a lot of knowledge in web development and i'm not particularly acquainted with that.

If some are interested in joining and help us (Marketing, PR, coding...), feel free to leave me message.

Well, I am grateful you took this project over man and hope it has a chance at success with you behind the wheel!  I am however really put off by the fact that we are counting on the original dev, who dropped us all like a hat, to implement the technology that sets this coin apart.  That is kinda scary as he has already proved he is extremely unreliable!!  I mean, how fast did he launch this coin and turn around and bounce?  I suspect I will not be the only one with these concerns.......really hard to have faith or trust in someone after that!

Anyways, I do hope things work out and wish the coin nothing but success!

Now that this coin has finally caught my eye, I will keep tabs on development.

If you are one of the small handful watching this project, might be good to hit up Poloniex.  Bittrex would be great, but they tend to go where the money is.  Poloniex has a better track record of taking on the more obscure coins.  A great way to give a coin exposure is to simply get it on an exchange.

I sent poloniex a message asking them to take a look at the coin and consider adding it.  Hoping this poor orphan coin lost in the shuffle of last winter's alt boom actually gets developed, seems so promising.

Yeah, updates would be nice.  I imagine there isn't much to update us on because if this project is still alive it is moving along at a snails pace.  At least the difficulty is low.  I'm shooting to mine 1 million and then I will sit back and see how this progresses.

HA!  I did the same thing, have been in the "sit back and see how this progresses stage" after hitting a million about 2 weeks ago.

Sorry I didn't give any news earlier but yes this project is alive.

We plan to release an updated version of the client matching bitcoin 0.9.2 by the end of this week.
I still need to finish the PoW part and start testing the code before release it. Once this is released, we'll move forward to implement the paper design in the next release (0.9.9). This phase will be lead (at least in the coding part) by the guy who wrote the paper with me looking over.

Seems a long way to go.

The next phase is the most challenging one,
thus to see a version with the paper implemented,
we might need much longer timer,
any timeline for that?

Seems the lag in getting this going has prevented MetaCoin from actually being the first Escrow Currency.  Another coin just launched a while back with the exact same selling point, first Escrow currency.  I think it is pawncoin or something like that, but I believe they have beat us to the finish line:-(

Yeah I honestly do not know much about it, I saw the thread when it was first posted and my gut told me to leave quick so I did.  Before leaving though I noticed their claim to be the first to have built in escrow when Meta had already made that claim.  Meant to mention it here a while back and forgot about it till today so I did not really research it or anything.

Alpha version of 0.9.2 launched.

I'm going run a bunch of tests and fixes now. As you'll probably notice it's based on bitcoin 0.9.2.1 and as of now only the daemon will work. The former dev was suppose to deal with the QT part and didn't show up, so i'll do it through this weekend.

If someone is interested in looking or running the code, clone it from http://gitlab.metacoinproject.org/metacoin/metacoin-core/tree/0.9.2-alpha

And remember this is an alpha stage code.

Thanks for the update dev, is great to see some forward momentum happening here.

I think I stated my opinion of the "old" dev working on this project again, didn't feel right after he lost any and all trust from such a quick abandonment of this project.  This person is obviously HIGHLY unreliable and not committed at all to this project.  Personally I am glad he flaked again now rather than later!

Also Alexander has started to work on the next version which implement the paper.
His current roadmap is an early alpha version in four weeks.
Beta version and finale release for October.

I started to think about a potential relaunch for this coin. What do you think guys ?! Is that a bad idea ?

What do you mean the so called relaunch?
I have already mined the current meta coin for months.
I don't want to see that you create a new coin with a brand new genesis block.

I enjoy watching the waiting in this thread. If there were more developments, it might even be popcorn-worthy, but you're pretty much the only one that's been replying to this for the last month.

Good luck.
