Couldn't the thief just launder the coins bit by bit and get away with it scot-free?

For example: You could just trade some of them for another virtual currency on some random exchange, and then convert what you bought back into BTC, and voila, clean bitcoins. Or use a laundering service. It seems really easy to get around if you're smart?

Actually, the best way to clean the coins is to send them to an exchange, then cash it out to your bank account. Then use all that fiat to buy back the coins on the same exchange. Untraceable 

This would actually be very traceable as once it is discovered which exchange the coins were sent to then you could subpoena the exchange to provide the identity of the user who deposited the coins.

An exchange would provide only temporary cover to your identity.

All he is doing is breaking them down into multiple multiple smaller amounts with a script (which seems to break every so often, as we are up to 10 confirmations on the 400BTC and 210BTC). The origins of the coins are still clear, so no mixing is happening.

He may not be confident to use a mixer, as he may not sure if the mixing service will freeze his funds (obviously stolen funds).

Have BITMIXER.IO made any comment on whether they are happy to mix obviously stolen coins?

I thought there was a way to send the stolen btc to all the exchanges and basically have them marked. Is that possible or not? There has to be a way to track down stolen btc like this. If there isn't a way, there should be..

This should be a wake up call to everyone. Secure the shit out of your coin. Encrypt everything at the very least and use armory for added security..

It would be very irresponsible to not mix stolen funds like that. It would put into question the fungibility of bitcoin. With that being said they very well could keep logs of the transactions of the thief and disclose what the ultimate output address is.

Can you imagine how much pressure he/she must be under knowing these is a $300,000 bounty on his/her head?

Every noise must be analysed - is it something new, or just the regular sounds of the house? Is there someone outside?

If our hacker lives in a city, any time he/she hears a siren, he must freeze. Is it past yet? Feeling the sweat streaming down his back. Can he escape through the window? Why is his chest so tight? Will he fight? Will he pretend he knows nothing if apprehended?

Who is after him? Did he make any mistakes? Did he try to log into the dropbox a few days before, without being behind tor. Is that logged? Is he sure his IP hasn't been revealed somewhere? Is it even possible to be truly traceless? As a hacker, he knows it's not possible.

This hacker is clearly a computer chair hacker in that he has no idea how the rest of the criminal world works.

Stealing that amount if bitcoin is so stupid because of the way bitcoin can be tracked.

The hackers need only make one small mistake and he will be busted. His best hope is to return the btc. His second best hope is that the police catch him. The last and worse option is three large dudes show up to collect the bounty. What isn't an option is that the hacker gets to live happily ever after spending the coins.

My prediction is that the hacker is in jail or dead in less than two weeks.

Not to give the guy too many ideas, or encourage others on the forum, but I just want to point out that this is incorrect.

Let me use an example:-

In short

1) send a multitude of periodic transactions to obscure exchanges with small amounts to different accounts, maybe use new ones every time ( there are tons of other exchanges now, much smaller and discreet than the big ones, all reputable)
2) Sell coins and send fiat to numbered accounts of unregistered visa cards
3) Go to ATMs and cash out
4) As an extra layer of security, rotate the ATMs you use.

And to top it all off, there is no guarantee the hacker is in a jurisdiction in which the hackeds' country's laws have effect, so even if you find him, short of illegal means, there is little recourse.

I do recommend you get the word out. Send an email to some of the Bitcoin news networks so they at least write a post about it. If you have any more btc get them safe right away, no excuses.
Other then that I don't think you can get them back to be honest.

You won't see too much at the top off any bitcoin related news site that pertains to theft. Most bitcoin related sites are heavily vested in bitcoin and are reluctant to promote thefts as news; as this decreases adoption. I've seen it happen multiple times on reddit and this forum. Thefts/hacks get buried in sub-forums and downvoted on reddit.

Bitcoin is the wild west of financial markets right now. We have some growing up to do as a community. Those with vested interests do not want bad news on the front page. If you want to hold bitcoin; HODL it CODL.
