First time I've ever heard of a forum which allows the posting of the personal information of others by forum users.

Seems a day or two ago a forum member posted personal information which he thought was about me in order to attempt to impugn my intergity.

He was wide of the mark but I nevertheless complained to the appropriate moderator.

Getting no respones, I complained again and again no response.

Figuring the squeaky wheel gets the grease, I complained yet again and received this response today:

In other words, your privacy on this forum is not guarranteed by forum rules.

Any Tom, Dickwad or Harry can try to figure out who you are and post it all over the place without penalty.

Now I replied to the Mod that I would handle it, so handle I have.

I think that we all need to petition Theymos for identity protection except for proven scam accusatioins here on this forum.

What say you?

I'm going to tag this to be moved to meta, off-topic is not the right place for it.
This is just crazy. Basically if someone wanted to make a personal attack on you, the forum rules would allow it. Great.
The rules are just a mess here.

That is the problem. There is no way that the forum could verify every scam accusation, nor should it have to now that there are more appropriate services available for this. Since we can't make exceptions to allow for people to post the personal information of scammers, we have two choices:

1) Remove all posted personal information, like Reddit.
2) Allow everyone to post personal information about anybody.

Bitcoin attracts a lot of scammers, so I would tend to err on safer side of allowing all personal information. Not to mention, if it wasn't posted here, it would just be posted somewhere else. Public information cannot be made unpublic.

Right.

I do feel for innocent victims of doxxing, though. I welcome suggestions on how to improve forum policy in this area. However, forum policy must be consistent, and I'm not going to start deciding who's guilty and who's not (again).

I've been thinking that maybe it would be an improvement to require that dox be posted along with sources for all of the data, and ban dox that doesn't come from a "public source" (government site, news story, Facebook, etc.). This would make casual doxxing more difficult, help readers determine whether the dox is actually accurate, and hamper distribution of info obtained from illegal sources (hacking, etc.). I'm not sure that it would help enough to be worth the trouble, though.

Well, I think it would but thank you for noticing this thread and recognising the problem.

I cannot thank you enough for your efforts in maintaining this forum and do not think for one second that I was calling into question your honesty or integrity.

Again thank you for your help but I do beleive that the privacy of forum must be preserved in order to maintain an atmosphere of free and open communiction.

The problem is that it means that people can't post things like shipping info and unpublished email addresses attached to PayPal accounts used in a scam. Ultimately, it comes down to whether or not it's more important to protect innocents vs denying scammers from reusing an identity.

PMs work well for that sort of thing and if they then CHOOSE to make the info public, that's another matter.

Well, now, among the things in my Magic Bag of Tricks is little subscription information service that I run, the clients of which are mostly attorneys, PIs, process servers, employers and even  the occasional law enforcement agency because what we do is scavenge the net for personal information about the requested party.

You would be surprised what is out there!

Nowlet us suppose there is a forum member who we will call "Johnny Jackass".

Just for shits and grins I decide to expose Johnny and begin my search.

Generally within a few hours I will have his SSN, his street adress and a Google view of that, Google directions to his house, his credit rating, the names of his wife, his kids and maybe even the names of his cats and dogs, as well as his boat registration, if he's got one, his licence plate numbers, a copy of his latest tax return, his Facebook account (hacked); the list goes on and by current forum rules I could post it all and be off Scot free!

Now I wouldn't do any of that but the point is that under current forum rules.............

I COULD!

Beginning to get my point?
