“It’s going to be a very sombre week,” he said. “The struggle with the epidemic is bigger than any one individual but the collective loss of so many important people is one that is emotionally devastating.”

Kenyan development worker Perez Odera said she feared the tragedy would dissuade people from flying to conferences such as this.

“I just feel it is very, very unfortunate. It’s something we don’t have control over,’’ she said.

Dr Robert Grant, a researcher from the Gladstone Institute at the University of California, said that on arriving in Melbourne he had heard reports Prof Lange had died.

Most of the casualties in Syria were caused when the US-backed FSA and ISIS massacred civilians in the eastern provinces of Syria, although some were killed as a result of action by the government forces.

Yes... Assad's forces have Grad and other multi-barrel rocket launchers, and they are also using barrel bombs. But what about the rebels? They are also armed with sophisticated weaponry such as advanced anti-tank missiles.

It's a complex conflict, FSA, al nusra and ISIL are mainly a lot of local militia associated with low central control. For sure some are criminal but some are just citizen who want protect their neighborhood.
