There's a lot of talk about scalability at the moment, if mainly technical rather than alt-coin action.  And not a lot of mention of Cryptonite. How do you guys see Cryptonite fitting in to all of this, and becoming more prominent?
[...] But I also know that Cryptonite wont succeed unless I can build a market around it and give people something to spend their XCN on.
Although that would be a good thing, I really don't think it matters.
My theory is that the majority of Bitcoin holders(90% or more) simply think that bitcoins are a good investment and a alternative way of storing their money. The fact that we can easily exchange them among each other makes them somewhat similar to money, but I believe that as long as the coin itself doesn't offer something that our regular money does - there are few reasons why bitcoins would compete with our established monetary system.

In the same way, let's say hypothetically that gold could be sent through the internet, that doesn't mean we would start to use gold instead of our fiat.

That's also why I think Mini-Blockchain is so important - the whole deal with Bitcoin is a trust-based system, we all trust our money to be stored in Bitcoin, because we think that it will remain safe/solid/decentralized, and it has provided these things... Except for the ever-expanding blockchain which will ultimately lead to the consolidation of full nodes, and in that sense Bitcoin will lose the essence which it was built upon.

But I also know that Cryptonite wont succeed unless I can build a market around it and give people something to spend their XCN on.

Presumably development needs to focus on specific niches where this might gain traction - exchanges, prediction markets, maybe gambling, anything involving immediate need for high-volume transactions.  I was wondering how this might relate to Open Transactions/Monetas, which seem to aim to provide multi-sig secured exchange technology for high speed trading.

A wider awareness of it's technical merits so that it is seen as a distinct family of coins (c.f. cryptonote) would be great.  The possibility of anonymity-centric and sidechains versions is exciting for this.  I wonder how challenging it would be to look at building integration into Hive wallet, which seems a really forward thinking project with in-wallet app functionality for buying and using crypto-tokens.

Hi, can someone help me with my wallet sync issues.

Last 2 days I'm trying to sync my wallet but with no luck, I deleted whole Cryptonite folder from Appdata.
When I open wallet progress bar completes "Downloading headers..." and "Downloading blocks..." but it allways hangs at "Downloading trie..."
I have tried adding nodes to cryptonite.conf, opened port 8253 and I also tried without conf file, on different pc also and it allways hangs on "Downloading trie..."
I tried at least 15 times to sync, every time I deleted everything from ~\AppData\Roaming\Cryptonite but no luck.

Hi All,

I'm trying to build Cryptonite on a Mac but it fails because clang (xcode) does not support gcc TLS which seems to have been used extensively in the source code. I notice that there is a Mac binary so somebody must have managed to build it on a Mac, is there a build guide somewhere ?

I wanted to play around with the code and try and merge some of the cryptonote anonymity features and bitcoin SVP with the mini-blockchain idea unless somebody has done this already ?

Thanks

Do you guys know the total XCN on sell at BTer? I just found that there is a big amount of XCN to deposit into Poloniex to sell: 5.9 mil (10% of total mined coins), a big increase from 290k several days ago.

Somebody did research and concluded that CryptoNote protocol/scheme was not compatible with mini-blockchain. So it is impossible until you come up with a new protocol/scheme

Try deleting all cryptonite entries from the registry. Just do a search in regedit for cryptonite. This seems to force it to do a clean install when you run the exe.

Hi, is there a guide to building from source on a Mac ? I can build on Linux OK, but I really need to use a sensible IDE like xcode rather than vi. Thanks.

You know there are actual IDEs for linux, not just vi. You could at least use vim Tongue

"Even with a population of 10 billion people where each person had 10 different non-empty
addresses, we would only need to keep track of 100 billion addresses. Since we can remove
empty addresses from the database and since a transaction would simply require peers to
shift around numbers in this database instead of adding new data to it, the size of the
account tree should always remain considerably small. By the time we reach anything close
to 100 billion unique non-empty addresses our computers will be much faster."

I'm a bit concerned with this. Even though it seems like a reasonable conclusion, we must also consider the possibility of sabotage.

If each XCN is divisible by up to 8 decimals, this means that a person who owns 10,000xcn can create 1,000,000,000,000 addresses, potentially cluttering up the account tree enough to cause problems. This is a dangerous attack vector.

Wouldn't it be possible to hard fork and put a division limit to 3 decimals? Even if XCN would reach the market cap of bitcoin, a 0.001xcn would only be worth ~$0.1

I don't see any use for that many decimals.

Yes that is a legitimate point, that's why we will implement account tree pruning at some point in the future. Lowering the level of decimal places is not a feasible solution. Low balance accounts need to be removed from the account tree after some period of time. The exact details of how it should work is still undecided because it's a very complicated subject.

No problem, hopefully the next windows version of the wallet will have an uninstall option so people can easily do a clean install. There are probably people who gave up on the coin after having the same issue.

Try to run wallet with -resync switch, I was stuck at exact same spot and running wallet with -resync switch solved it.
