Despite its peak at nearly at $140,000 in 2018 by the time 5 years is passed people will be proclaiming the death of bitcoin after its price plummets down to about $23,000. However there will still be diehards saying that the all time high can be broken and bitcoin will go to the moon. Hardly anyone will own whole bitcoins by then.

You are probably right in optimistic scenario, but i would so much preferred it just hugging a dark red trendline It would save so much angst. I could not even fathom the emotions of a person if and when it goes to 140K only to "collapse" to 23K. Knowing myself-I wouldn't be able to handle such volatility. Almost nobody could-you basically would have to be removed from markets all together to not sell. In any case, i don't think that we have two more "bubbles" left in bitcoin-perhaps just one, but it could be the biggest.

and after that? there will be more significant halving, so it will be still around with a greater price Yes it will.
And it will be much bigger than today, like BTC today is bigger than 2 or 3 year back
probably if you see that bitcoin has started from 1 and in 5 years we are at around 230, it means a x230 increase so around 40-50k in 2020? however the rise should be exponential and not linear

it would be nice, but the questions would then be: 1. should I cover my mortgage with a few coins or continue to hold for 100K, 200K, etc.? 2. should I exchange a few more coins on another or better RE piece?

around 2k -3k... I don't recommend investing money that you need for the next 2 years. Ideally 5 years. I do think we'll see a huge rise soon, but I'm not betting anything on it ... just buy and hold

Well the first question is a no-brainer, of course bitcoin is going to be alive and well in five years time, since there is no real way to kill it off, due to its design of decentralization. The price factor is a bit harder to answer, and can be only speculative, but my estimates are about 2-5 k USD. It's impossible to know, but i believe it should be well above 2k for sure. I only stated the price estimate for "regular" price, but there will probably be many pumps and hypes by then, that could go quite a bit higher than that. cheers

Agreed with the first legit and licensed exchange in NY (even though itbit is a foregin singapore corporation), the launch of bitcoin on NASDAQ Stockholm May 18th, and the active trading on OTCQX markets with GBTC puts bitcoin in a very solid foundation for the future. It is being taken seriously by more and more people and organizations every year. When this thread started in July 2014 people still dismissed BTC as a ponzi or pryamid scheme. We all got excited when merchants started adoption and now this year it's going on legit exchanges around the world. The smart money came in, and now we are opening up the institutional investors phase. Coinbase, Circle, 21 Inc are steadying their sights as the masses. 2016 will mark the block reward having, the block size increase and new apps from start ups. There's no doubt BTC will still be happening in 2019. What will the price be? No idea, but the simple rule of supply and demand with only 21 million max coins makes me a regular buyer every paycheck.

People will get proved wrong in 5-10 year cycles everytime they claim "It's over". We had the "it's over" moment 2 times already, with the first small bubble and the second 1.2k ATH, can't wait for the next stop.

Bitcoin will absolutely be around in 5 years, at this moment in time it's almost impossible to predict what the price will be. There are so many possibilities. We have the halving in summer 2016, Winklevoss twins will probably have their COIN ETF with NASDAQ approved, their Gemini exchange will be up & running, the NY Bitlicense will have been approved. Plus there will be massive mainstream adoption by then.
If I had to have a guess at the price in 5 years I would conservatively say $2500 with room to be even more.

That's very conservative for you LFC. Did you miss a zero or two in your prediction Seriously though, $2,500 would be my low end guess. That would be the crashing price, the bitcoin is dead price after it rises to $10K+

I think if we go to 10,000 dollars I'll sell probably over half of my stash as that'll make me a very happy man. I'd always hodl a certain amount though. Imagine if you sold everything at 10k & 10 years later we hit 100k.

Imagine if you sold everything at 10k & 10 years later we hit 100k. This was discussed at length previously (sane and simple bitcoin savings plan, etc.) Basically, the plan is to sell 10% of your stake at each doubling (and start with no more than 20% of your assets in BTC). Not many can wait until x10 without selling some. I saw another awesome plan: accumulate bitcoin in 2015-2016 until next halving, then stop and proceed to sell 1/x on every birthday with x being a number of years remained in an average expected lifespan (x could be increased if you think that people in your family typically live longer than average). Say, you are 30 and average lifespan for a male in US is 81, hence x=50 in 2016 and every year from then on you will be spending 2% of your bitcoin stash. i think that it could be awesome-gifts, vacations, etc. Personally, the latter plan looks better to me than waiting on doubling which may or may not come.

if there will be a raise after each halving, expect a crash after that too, i would sell after every big pump(you know it when you will see it)
so in 2020 you should be prepared to sell some of your stash, because of the third halving
my big worry is that the 2016 halving is too hyped, and if it fades or reserve bad experiences, bitcoin might end up being forgotten before 2020, like it happened with doge(after its first halving)...

The price will probably stay in the $210-250 range for the next 10-12 years
lol that would be the craziest outcome ever. People might get bored if it does that bitcoiners want it all or nothing.

People often can't see beyond the end of the week. The future will boot their balls through the tops of their mouths whether they like it or not.
