My earlier comments were to BadBear, who I usually like. He ignored them. Since that's been the case, I have merely aired my grievance in public. This does not affect my posting, as I do not (currently) operate any of the now banned essential services. I have watched this unfold, and watched it being (legitimately) ignored. Like it or not, all things cryptocurrency eventually find their way to this forum. If Theymos needs more revenue, that's understandable. He should consult with businesspeople on how he might do that. Arbitrary and capricious rules with the sole purpose of restricting commerce on a website supposedly dedicated to a new form of commerce do not make monetary or ethical sense. Some restriction on the number of posts per thread to prevent spam, sure. A blanket denial on services that we all rely on in some manner? That could ONLY make sense to someone high on drugs or power.

I am a miner, a trader, and an activist. Not necessarily in that order. I follow the latest happenings in a number of threads. I do NOT regularly scan the OP, and judging by the other posts, neither do the majority of your users. This is ordinary and not egregious. Some of these threads run to hundreds of pages, and just keeping up is often difficult, let alone scanning the OP for posts, or seeking out pools or exchanges via other threads. There is NOT ONE THING in this rule that will actually reduce spam, as an enterprising operator is going to start a new thread and get his friends and sock puppets to bump the hell out of it. Why? because it needs to be noticed by the customers, miners, and yes, casual readers of these fora.

This rule was not thought out. I won't say it was poorly thought out because there was CLEARLY no thought behind it. It was the blind reaction of an amoeba to stimulus, or a drunkard, or a crackhead.

It is NOT a valid defense when asked or ordered to do something you KNOW to be morally suspect. It never has been and it never will be. Ok now this is even more confusing and it goes beyond insane. You've pretty much said that the Exchanges can post on a coin ANN thread to let people know they've added a coin, that they can't post the URL but the exchange is now supposed to refer people to go to the Exchange's thread for the info they need regarding the coin. Why is it so bad that c-cex or bittrex posts information about a coin being added? that's one of the fundamental parts of an altcoin.

So people in the Altcoin mining sections can't discuss the most important aspects of an altcoin which are:
1. Extraction
2. Markets/Exchanges/Price


This entire forum is full of scammers, fudsters, there are actually organized groups that have destroyed even good coins by spreading lies and creating fake accounts posing as the actual coin dev. (This happened on GNS and the scam group killed the coin within hours of it being launched) And what happened with the fake accounts? I posted about it and my posts got deleted, the dev had to actually lock the thread and create a self-moderated thread although it was too late, the coin was dead already, this made a lot of people lose money  while the scammers just went to the bank.

It's pretty obvious that some of you actually want the altcoin section to go away, you guys treat the section as a nuisance, when in fact it generates the most traffic for bitcointalk, do you honestly think the huge traffic increase in the past 10 months has been because of Bitcoin?
Keep it up and that traffic will simply go somewhere else.

Obviously this decision was too strict and in many ways insane. I was highly suspicious about how staff members agreed to bringing this rule to use. Ends up it's only a couple of people that have total control of this forum's rules.  Don't staff member like you have a voice in such discussions? I do understand these concerns were adressed, but the only thing I can suggest you is to try and establish a direct dialog with BadBear via PM. The more people talk, the more likely they will reach some kind of agreement.

So far, both of the admins listen, address and take into account our opinions. Regarding this situation, I have no opinion (neutral). I'm not an alt miner, nor a trader and I tend to follow the bigger and more established alts so the fact these posts have been removed have no effect on me. Mate, but there have indeed been dialogues between BadBear and probably a dozen members in this thread. Yet, all of our reasoning, concerns and opinions were just brushed aside.
I wonder what PMs to BadBear could achieve beyond rehashing the same arguments.
Everyone (possibly even BadBear, by now) knows this rule resolves a very small issue at the high cost of censoring useful information from reaching members.

One thing that seems to be missing in BCTalk moderation is discerning. Not every message is subject to be considered spam, however they apply it with no exception, going all nuts over that.

I think it's time for people to shift to another forum where intelligence can still be used while moderating.

Regarding Pools I'd like to add:

I fully agree that page filling ads are "too much" and should not be posted but miners and devs do seek pools for their coin. Addition to OP is not always quick enough so a simple one or two liner should really be allowed in thread, of course not on every page.

Also Block Explorers which I add for some coins, are considered as "pool spam" as my pool link is my sig. If I advertise for other coins/gambling sites etc. and SELL my sig this is allowed but advertising for my own service which is free (!) is considered spam ?

I've tried to message BadBear directly as I'm having some concerns how to keep up my services without breaking the new "rules" of this board - as previously stated there are scammers, fudsters and trojan/virus spreaders in this board whose posts don't even get deleted by moderation but a simple "Block explorer for XY added under xy.suprnova.cc" is considered spam and gets me a "warning" for a ban.. Thats more than insane.. Its like keeping the enthusiasts out and getting the gangsters in

An important note: It sucks for everyone when there is a fork, or a version upgrade, and we don't get notified. Sometimes developers just tweet that there is an upgrade. We're busy  running the site - we do not have time to read every tweet we are mentioned in every day. We read them, in time, but if it's an emergency upgrade (a fork) or there is a hard fork coming in less than a week - we may not see it. The only truly RELIABLE way to ensure we know about a mandatory upgrade is to submit a support ticket. Just have someone hop by http://support.[mystery website].com and let us know. We see those all the time, and some of us have the app on our phones and see support tickets instantly.

If for some reason your github source changes (community takeover for example) PLEASE let us know that in the ticket. We save the github sources so we don't have to scour for it again later - and if you have an upgrade, but we're checking the old source code, it will really delay the upgrade. You only need to provide a github source if the source has changed.

If that's advertising spam, I'll change it again. And again. Until it reaches the point that accounts owned by pools/exchanges/websites are not allowed to post ANYTHING AT ALL. You know, until the real reason this is being done is fulfilled - until we pay.

I think we'd all rather it just be said plainly: "Pay us." At least that'd have a small degree of respectability. Whats hilarious is that none of us, except maybe Bittrex and Mintpal and Cryptsy are likely making enough money off these endeavors to afford to pay the absurdly high advertising rates here. I've looked into it. Hiring someone to run a precisely targeted AdWords campaign is cheaper than tiny advertising space here. The last aucton ended with a slot costing 4 BTC for 1 week. They are stating about 2 million impressions, but there are only about 200k unique IPs. No statistics about click-throughs, which is what just about everyone else uses, so, hard to compare. And since there are 8 slots, people always buy more than 1 to increase their visibility. Lowest last round was 2 slots. At 4 BTC each.

For $2400 I can get one hell of an awesome Google AdWords rep putting on one amazing ad campaign. For a hell of a lot longer than a week. With infinitely more visibility.

+1000.  The majority of these posts being marked as "spam" couldn't possibly by any more ON topic.  I don't own any of kind coin related service, but THIS is the information I am looking for when reading a thread.  THIS is the information that matters.  Everyone in the thread who matters is mining, buying, selling, trading, or exchanging the coin, so the MOST IMPORTANT and most ON TOPIC information is where that activity can be done.  I could care less about the fud and back and forth between people saying "this coin is the best" and "this coin sucks".  I propose you do the opposite of what is currently proposed and remove all the clutter and meaningless posts and ONLY allow posts related to services of each specific coin.

User CoinDev starts a thread for his coin. Lots of people post.

User CoinMiner posts in the thread, "Hey, we can mine this at superpool.org and trade it at coinexchange.com!"

That is considered advertising spam, even though CoinMiner has nothing to do with those organizations.

I presume then that you mods are diligently working at removing any mention of "Lets get our coin on Cryptsy!" and "Go vote to get us on Mintpal!" and "Dude we just broke 3 BTC volume over on Bittrex!" posts right? I would surely hope so. Because if you aren't, exchange and pool operators may be forced to make alternate accounts and post in these threads as excited users who are talking about their coins.

Seriously. It was mentioned (I may be wrong, I scanned the first 5 pages, didnt see it, and have work to do tonight, so going off memory) that UnrelatedUser can NOT tell a coin's thread that the coin has been listed somewhere.
