str is dead

Stellar is probably the most alive cryptocoin on the planet. Their organisation as well as their network is by far the most professional of all altcoins (besides maybe Ripple). Black Rock, Google.org and Fast Forward back this coin.

Subscribe to their mailing and follow them on Twitter. These guys rock the planet like no other dev team of any other shitty altcoin out there.

All fundamentals are rocksolid and transparent. This coin could potentially be valued as high as Ripple or Ethereum. It's just a matter of time untill people will realize.

I definitely like this coin, but I have not received news from them, though, and signed to them.

That I have seen for myself, but still having this crypto in the dark by not making a GUI wallet for non tech savvy users, makes me think that it will take a long while to see XLM sparkle one day. I mean if you want to attract people who haven't been into crypto (or aren't knowledgeable at all of commands) you should have at least a GUI wallet and good things will come for this coin. Just my opinion.  Roll Eyes

By the way, I still can't even make a wallet since the process seems somewhat confusing for me. That is why I still haven't invested into Stellar, unless they prove an easier way to make one.  Sad

The price of a lumen will follow XRP's rise in price based on its payment volume due to its interoperability.

I have never understood how to setup an XLM wallet, so that is another thing that prevented me from investing into this coin.  Sad

Hey Abiky. In order to stay focused on our core mission and encourage community ownership of the ecosystem, Stellar.org does not plan on significant development of a wallet, though there is a simple account viewer that lets you send/receive lumens. Instead, we’ll continue to improve open-source developer tools so that participants in the ecosystem can build a variety of new services. It seems to be working! You can create a new account with a third-party service such as Lobstr (Stellar wallet for Android, iOS, and web). Developers can also use the Stellar API to directly create an account. Hope this helps  Smiley

Thanks Geenstijl! Really appreciate the support. We're pretty excited about Black Rock, Google.org, and Fast Forward, too. Cool

klarki, if you direct message me your email I can check to see if you're subscribed to the mailing list. Or if you prefer you can just try to sign up here; if you're already subscribed it should tell you, and if not you can sign up directly there. We usually send about one email a month. You can also join slack.stellar.org or #stellar & stellar-dev on IRC (they're mirrored) - it's the most active community channel.

Hi,

You should not advice for lobstr.co use.

Because :
- it keeps your secret key online, in case of hack you will lose your coins (I don't know for stellar.org account-viewer);
- when you send money there is a field "message", I was believing it to be MEMO but nothing appeared in transaction (and memo should have a type id, text, hash...). So I sent coins to poloniex and now I'm waiting for a potential recovery because coins were sent without MEMO Sad
- I didn't see how I can ask for support, there is nothing on lobstr.co, not even a simple email address.

I'm not a beginner using cryptocurrencies, so I can't imagine how this annoyance could be felt by a newcomer...
Do not use lobstr.co

Another disruptive thing, Lumens symbol on marketplaces :
Bittrex and Kraken XLM
Poloniex STR
I was unable to sent Lumens from Poloniex to Bittrex, memo error.

Is this coin (I know Stellar is more than a coin but my concern is about Lumens at the moment) aimed to be used for exchange between people or is it only a speculative toy for traders ?

Finally, is the secret key the only thing I need to store Lumens offline (cold wallet) ? It seems that official stellar account-viewer only asks you for this secret key to be able to send coins.

Thanks

Hi,

Honestly, neither: from our FAQ page, "The hope is that the currency itself will be mostly a behind-the-scenes currency."

Here's an example of how you can store lumens offline: As a personal project, Bartek (Stellar developer) built a prototype of a Go cold wallet, designed for Raspberry Pi. Please be sure to try transactions on the testnet first. https://github.com/bartekn/cold

If you'd like to talk through other cold storage questions, I'd highly recommend joining slack.stellar.org or asking in stellar-dev on IRÇ.

I also got in touch with Lobstr to find out about their support - support@lobstr.co is their support address. they say they're going to update the site with the info, too.

So I gather that no one here can, in a simple step-by-step manner, explain to a non-dev noob like me how to purchase and store XLM. Correct? Gotta know code? Can't find a single (safe) wallet out there. As someone mentioned earlier, Lobstr keeps your private key online. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

@Weltumschauung here's how you could create an account, buy lumens, and store them w/o handing over your private key:

1) Use the Account Creator tool to generate your public and private key. Save them somewhere safe, like a password vault.

2) Purchase lumens on an exchange and have the exchange send them to your public key.

3) From there, you can use the account viewer to send and receive lumens and check your balance.

The reason that you're seeing a focus on developers precisely because most people need apps/services/tools to interact with the protocol. We're focused on getting people to build localized tools to serve their own communities. We hope this encourages community ownership of the ecosystem, rather than a centralized ecosystem with Stellar.org at the center. Hope that makes sense.

Finally some clear instructions on how to setup my first Stellar account and get started. Thanks for sharing this. I have waited a long time for this. Hopefully, I would be able to invest into Stellar and join this exciting journey. The BTC-Lumen giveaway is awesome and definitely a great idea to gain more interest into XLM. I am watching this thread for more updates. Also, I have joined Slack to keep up to date with XLM's current development.  Cheesy
