20% seems like an awful lot.  What sites are you comparing to when you say it is a competitive rate?
I believe iTunes charges 30%, but that's iTunes.
Well, I can't argue with that...

I suspect the high fees are because of the usually low prices in the range of a few dollars.

20% seems totally fine for a site that has -tons- of content. It's really nice to be able to think of something and go get it for coin or to browse through a bunch of neat stuff you haven't seen.

But right now you aren't really able to make that kind of offering and you need people to help you. That makes me think free or cheap to start is the way to go. Maybe leave the fee, but give rewards to the providers of the most downloaded material?

But otoh, there isn't really any competition to speak of so you can price pretty... aggressively.

But on the third hand, you invite competition pretty quickly if you charge too much.

What do you think about using your software under different branding to sell porn? it seems to be a growing thing the last week or so. reddit.com/r/girlsgonebitcoin if you didn't know.

Cool!  You made the website I wanted to make, but didn't have time for...!  Smiley

CDbaby, Orchard and iTunes all charge 25%+ and have setup or annual fees in addition. Don't forget that if the site gets to significant volume licensing to Thompson will be required for MP3 sales. For that reason, I would recommend sellers upload music in Ogg Vorbis and we'll make it easy for users to purchase in the format they prefer.

To this I can only say, if you think you have something that will sell, especially something that is exclusively sold for Bitcoin(therefore giving folks a reason to buy Bitcoin and use coinDL), shoot me an email at info@coindl.com

I'm aware of that and if someone has strong experience in that industry, I would be open to discussing it. It's just not the focus for this site at this time.

I do think 20% is fair.  Considering the amount of development and hosting required it makes sense.  I do not know of any type of site that charges less, and as others have pointed out almost everyone charges more.

Tried it. Loved it.  Cool

Posted my first impressions to reddit:

Quote
Cool. I bought the Keys of Life album after briefly listening to the preview. Soooo relaxing.

So... Allow me to briefly share my experience. No login required. Download available in < 10 seconds. Download was super fast. Hands down user experience I've had in any web store. The whole process, from "I want this" to listening to the album on my computer took maybe 2 minutes. This is the future, gentlemen. iTMS, Steam, EA Origin etc. seem positively obsolete after trying coinDL. Will definitely use this site again (and again) if only they start listing other non-crap items. I'd give this six stars if I could. My faith in Bitcoin just got upped a notch or three.

PS: The album is great. If you have a few Bitcoins lying around, try it!

Tl;dr: Best web store experience I've encountered. Ever. Soooo user friendly. This site deserves to succeed. Can not praise highly enough. Use this.

The only thing which sucks, and awfully at that is the content selection. Everything is awful (except the album i bought, Keys of Life is lovely). So... Get to work.

Get your stuff up there. I'm buying. (I'm looking at you ZhouTonged.) Would definitely use that for my ringtone.

Thanks elux. As I said on Reddit, elux is not employed by coinDL Tongue

Getting artists, authors and publishers on the site is the #1 priority. I'm reaching out every way I know how to get folks interested in selling on the site.

I think there are a couple of things that can help. One is, if you know anyone who is publishing a download of any sort, have them email me at davids@exchb.com and I'll help get them setup.

The second one is a demonstration which will make it easier to understand just how unique and fast the purchase process is. I wish I could buy everything like this.

I just created a bounty to encourage people (you!) to make this video: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=75468.0

An update: Since launch, we now have the album by Justin Porter that is leading in sales and a song called Welcome to Love with a solid harmonic feel. Another ringtone has been added and more content is in preparation to go live on the site soon.

The response has been great so far. Thanks for reading,

i noticed that when downloading, the "Content-Length" is not set in the http response header. this leads to the browser not displaying a progress bar.

From what I can tell, the site is running a modified version of StrongCoin.com's micropayments script. If this is indeed the case, then the Content-Length header should be passed to the browser.

Edit: I just tried it on the free download, and it appears you are correct:
Code:
HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Thu, 05 Apr 2012 03:24:05 GMT
Server: Apache/2.2.16 (Debian)
X-Powered-By: PHP/5.3.3-7+squeeze8
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="BitcoinWallpaper-2.ZIP"
Keep-Alive: timeout=15, max=98
Connection: Keep-Alive

You're right about it being a modified version but none of the backend code is the same. The Content-length header is now in place.

Bitcoin: An Idea Worth Spending

I have no idea how this thread is evolving for I stopped reading the point I quoted below.

Quote
Hello all,

Over the past several months I spent a lot of time talking with others in the community and thinking about Bitcoin: what it really needs, what would truly be a game changer, and about Bitcoin's unique strengths. It's time to play to Bitcoin's strengths!

Taking stock of the massive number of tools Bitcoiners have developed, it's clear that Bitcoin is ready to be the foundation for a new economy. It is time now to enable people to earn Bitcoin just like they currently earn dollars, euros, and yen. It is time now to demonstrate the possibilities, providing something people are already familiar with in a new and simple, even magical way.

It is my great pleasure to announce a new digital download marketplace called coinDL.

To me, this doesn't pass the smell test. Way too much hype! Sorry, weex.

~Bruno~

PS: If I'm in error in posting this, I'm man enough to apologize to weex, or to anybody else that may be offended by this post.

No need to apologize Phinnaeus Gage, I did get a bit strong with the rhetoric on the initial post. Be thankful I didn't resort to poetry or a filk.

What I hope comes through is that I'm working hard to make sure the site and Bitcoin reach their full potential. I'm sure you don't need help with Bitcoin but if you'd like to try out coinDL, pm me an address and I'll fund a small test.
